There are some very well preserved areas, like some of the towers that you can go into and look out across the valley. The gunpowder tower was a fun area to visit too. The dungeons are at the bottom of the hill, just before the short but steep walk up to the castle. They're done very well. A little spooky, but still made fun for kids. The scaffolding on the ruins - although probably necessary - definitely takes away from the experience a little. Worth a visit if you're in the area and wanting to do the Highline.

I understand that historical sites feel that they need to do special things to attract The Youths…read moreor an otherwise more diverse group of attendees. But the historical significance of this castle -- now in ruins -- was somewhat muddied for us by the presence of the high-line bridge over the highway and the seasonal light show throughout the castle itself. It just felt like a tourist trap. If you go, focus on the signage and really focus on how this place was staffed and operated (and why) and you might get a sense of the emptiness of the place. Don't necessarily listen to the people selling the tickets, who are trying to upsell you on the complete experience (and the complete ticket price). The castle (and the high-wire bridge) are on Level One, and the cafe and a 360 degree view are on Level Two, each requiring different ticket prices. (Also, apparently, their "largest tree," which they offered as an incentive for us to go to Level Two on a rainy, misty day with zero view.)

Lots to see and you can do a self-guided tour with an audio stick. Photos can't be taken which was…read morenice as it meant no one was pressed up against everything. We learned so much about the history of the families from the region. It was amazing to see some of the clothing and I really loved the 326 piece dining set, with each piece containing a photo of a place that was special to King Ludwig III and Queen Marie Therese. The whole Hohenschwangau area is done so well. It was busy but never overcrowded. The only long wait we had was for the bus back down into Fussën towards the end of the day. Well worth getting the Swan-Ticket to enjoy the museum and both castles. Be sure to book well in advance (as in weeks ahead, not the day before).
