I love music. I really, really love music, but for some reason I cannot pry myself away from listening to NPR and KERA while driving around town. Especially in the mornings on my way to work. I absolutely adore the program Everythingthing You Ever Wanted to Know and the one about pets. Oh... and this American Life and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and... well... I guess everything. Love public radio and I'm completely shocked a station has landed in Dallas. I have for a long time been enjoying the free download songs of the day podcasts from KCRW (LA), KEXP (Seattle), and MPR (Minneapolis?), while never listening to Dallas radio, which like the rest of the broad US, is plagued by corruption and bad pop or delayed good pop (Lady Gaga - way too late on this one). I sense they are still trying to find an identity, and most of the time I tune in, they seem to only be playing the slow obscure folk (minus one star). I really hope they pick up the pace....Tegan and Sara, Passion Pit, Phoenix, Metric....so many great pop indie bands not getting the love. The greatest thing about public radio - it's supported and funded by the public, and you have more of a say with what they play than any other radio station in Dallas. read more

Yes they play a few too many old songs, but if they didn't, they be like every other station that play their top 20 same songs over and over. How many times can you listen to Goyte's "Someone I used to know" That and they are virtually commercial free (except during fundraising) !!! They tend to be a little on the mellow side, but there is nothing else in this town that comes close to playing the variety of music they do. I took this station for granted until I moved to Houston for a year. NPR is only on in Houston for a few hours per day (it's mostly a classical station). The best part about NPR is the variety and immediacy of the stories told. I've learned things and gained perspectives I never would have had I not listened to this station. All Things Considered, This American Life and Fresh Air are just a few examples of the outstanding content offered. read more

KXT isn't for everyone, but it's definitely what I have been waiting for.A good selection of local talent mixed in with alt country(e.g. Wilco, Ryan Adams,) as well as old school Beatles, Queen, The Who. And where else would you hear a cut off Mark Knopfler's new release? This is the place. What's also cool is that KXT streams over the internet, and the quality is pretty darn good. Best radio in the DFW! Where else can I hear The Ramones, LCD Soundsystem, Bowie, and the carpenters all in a day. I love this station!

I forget sometimes how much I can learn listening to NPR for a little bit over Top 40 or some of the other chatter I listen to.

For the most part, Dallas music radio is a wasteland. Clear Channel seems to own virtually every station in town...and it shows. The same 12 obnoxious, immature pop songs on constant repeat or, in the case of 102.1 The Edge, the same 15 alternative songs from the late 90's. JackFM was a brief reprieve, but even that grew stale. Alas, KXT is the shiny diamond in the rough. There is no better variety of genres and styles...and I have only rarely heard the same song more than twice in a week. Undercurrents overnights has saved me on many an overnight shift. Sure, there are some things I would change if I were in charge...perhaps more local artists, some hours dedicated genres or shows, and a slightly more adventurous playlist...but, all said, this is as good as it gets in North Texas. Turn off the iPod, turn up KXT, and support local public radio before it goes away like just about everything else that was once great in Dallas! read more

It's kinda "Indie" if you get that. A great mix of music OTHER THAN what is offered on local stations. It's got alot to offer from other places (as in their world cafe) and also special features from other places besides North TX = like from Memphis where I'm from. I only wish we had a nightclub here to actually PLAY LIVE things like they have on air. I love the station!!! No other word to desctribe it but "cool" :-). read more

It's nice to have a music station in Dallas that moves beyond the cookie-cutter formats elsewhere on the dial. While the playlist isn't infinite, I'll often go a week or more between hearing cuts. Some of the international flavors are not always to my tastes, but the variety keeps it interesting. Keep up the great work, KXT! read more

I used to have to stream KGSR out of Austin to get a decent station to listen to at work. And I wore myself out jumping stations during the commute. KXT is wonderful. Finally a station in Dallas that is diverse and not top 40 crap. I'm old....60....it reminds me of early 1970's FM. Deep cuts, quiet DJs, music that doesn't insult my intelligience. I may be old, but I love all kinds of music and get bored, bored, bored with classic rock and same old, same old. Thank you 91.7. read more

I just want to say: the past 2 hours of music are the best I've heard in quite a while on Dallas radio! I am pleasantly surprised; this is unusually good. So, keep it up please! In the Houston area, we only have KPFT (90.1) as a source for decent music. Unfortunatelly, it is moving more and more toward special interest talk radio and farther away from the music. This might be okay if you are a cross-dressing Iranian greeenpeace activist, but if you simply want to hear some worthwhile music, well, you get the picture. KXT is a treasure to behold. I truly hope it doesn't go the way of so many other "public" stations I've known- straight to the left and straight to hell. read more

Don't kid yourself by reading the older reviews below. While this may have been a decent station previously, it just plain sucks now. Their playlist is a horribly maddening mystery. Why again do I need to hear Dire Straits here ever? Eric Clapton? Joe Cocker? Bob Dylan? Police? These old, very dated acts and songs are the norm on this station now. New acts are sparingly included in the playlist. And don't try to look up the playlist on their webpage. It was disabled some time ago. Probably from being used against them by listeners. Everyone hoped this station would be a bright light in what I feel is the worst radio market in the country. The leadership at this station decided to quickly turn away what would have been a loyal, crazed listenership if they had stuck to some real indie/alternative music like we can't find in Dallas. So I am deleting them from all my radio settings and will go back to full time listening of the Ticket and supplemented by our horrible FM of 102.1 (all Foo Fighters all the time) and 102.9 (apparently owned by a Kelly Clarkson relative). Dallas FM radio can be best summed up by one word - vomit! read more

Without a doubt the best station in DFW. Super eclectic and feature a lot of indie bands and local bands. The other day they had my absolute favorite acoustic live version of the song Tyler by The Toadies (Dallas band) and it just made my day. Plus since it's member supported there are no commercials!!! I was on a road trip over the Labor Day weekend, when I learned of KXT. How it happened was very unconventional; while listening to Marketplace on KERA, they cross-promoted the new station. That "never" happens - but I guess that the ownership of this pair can make their own rules, that others cannot break. Tuned them in about 30 miles east of Dallas and fell in love with the station. Their mix is incredibly diverse and interesting. The on-air talent seems knowledgeable about the music their playing, and of course, being commercial-free is a big plus for me. Texas music, and songs that I haven't heard 10,000 times before. I would give them six stars if I could! Stayed with the station until I was about 80 miles South and they faded to static, but looking forward to listening on-line and I am probably going to become a member. I wish that we had a station like this on-the-air in Houston. They could teach KPFT, KTXU, and KTRU quite a bit about building listener support! read more

I was so excited when I heard about this station since I'm a big supporter of KERA radio. And I'm into Sirius and Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight and I like the Underground Garage. I thought KXT would be be a mix of the music that's played on KERA and shows like that. Boy am I disappointed. Except for Paul Slavins and his very excellent show and the one show of Mountain Stage, most everything else sounds like MUZAK. Granted I work nights and for some unfathomable reason (must have gotten a HUGE discount), they play this show called Undercurrents for about 10 hours of each day and most of it is a snooze. The guy who runs the show talks in a whisper (just the thing to play at night, right? And he plays a few regular songs, a few B-sides and old stuff, but most of it is instrumental and chant-like stuff. Definitely not the kind of stuff to try to keep you awake at night, and after an hour, it all sounds alike anyway, I can't imagine why they thought 10 hours of that same program would be appealing. I've tried to catch some of the morning and evening shows, but really, mostly it all sounds the same except for Slavins. The announcers seem to think they need to talk as little as possible in as soft a voice as possible. No wonder people make fun of public TV and radio. It's so sad too, they have so many people pulling for them and such a wealth of material out there to make a really great radio station. read more

This station goes through troughs and valleys but overall-they hang in there and produce solid work. The Glenn Mitchell Show (R.I.P.) was great especially the "everything you wanted to know" show on Fridays. I was listening when Glenn brought this up on the Carolyn Bernard (I think I got the name correct) show. Some of my favorites are Studio 360, On the Media, This American Life and currently they are doing shows like the Infinite Mind. There is a late night (about 10pm or so) show that chats up the news with a comic bent. That one is kind of fun. Since 2006 they have put on some great radio shows and then they seem to change their mind and you never hear any more of these regular shows. There has been a lot of these and it sucks because most of them have been good. I do miss World Cafe but at least they do still have Fresh Air. Whatya Know is a decent show and honorable mentions go the Hispanic show on Sundays-the one with Maria Hinojosa and I like the news show that replaced the Tavis Smiley series. read more
