Amazing food! This place is great because it has a well-curated menu, but at the same time has tons of options to satisfy everyone in your group. I was visiting Minneapolis to see family for the weekend, and our group of five was super satisfied with this meal! Just discovered this place... and what a gem it is. Fish is incredibly fresh. The sushi rice is perfect. The hospitality is incredible. Had to add an additional item to my doordash order, staff was super accommodating over the phone. Can't wait to eat through the menu. Things to know: not your American strip mall sushi joint. There's maki, sashimi, specialty rolls and platter options. All the fish are sustainable options, there's tons of veggie and vegan options. You're not going to find your 'typical' spicy mayonnaise eel sauced crunch mango spicy gurl rolls here. You will find a more authentic sushi and pressed options though. Kyatchi has a great happy hour that we enjoyed on their dog-friendly, sidewalk patio on a particularly beautiful, summer evening. To accompany our drinks, we ordered the tonkatsu sandwich, negihama roll, and the chirashi bowl. If you manage to make it here during HH, do not hesitate to order the chirashi bowl. It was heavenly with tender slices of sashimi accompanied by pickled veggies, greens, and a housemade mayo sauce/paste atop a bed of perfectly cooked sushi rice. An incredible, delicious steal at $11.50. Service was warm and attentive. So i went to Kyatchi since the reviews were decent and on their website they talked a lot about sustainable fish and seemed to have a selection of fresh af fish. I ordered the Chef's Platter since I wanted to really see how the quality of fish was and also because I was REALLYYYYY craving nigiri. Like I said before, the fish was soooooo gooodd and I think it was the albacore that melted like BUTTER in my mouth....however the one big con with the sushi (maki and nigiri) is that there was actually no seasoning on the rice????? Since they used short grained sushi rice, there usually isn't any flavor...but no rice vinegar??? Or anything to season the rice was pretty off putting.. The ikura was a cute attempt but wasn't a big fan of how small each salmon egg was.. Kyatchi has a great selection of fish that was actually fresh and didn't taste like it was frozen and defrosted before it was served. They had the standard fare for a Japanese restaurant serving sushi (ramen) and other dishes that I thought was some what unique (extra af hot dogs). Amazing service. Me and my friend didn't make a reservation went in as a walk in. Max our wonderful host and waiter took great care of us. Gave us wonderful recommendations and the sushi was amazing. We started with miso soup, and followed with Ebi Mayo, Bincho Tatki, and avocado roll. The menu offers all sorts of amazing dishes, can't wait to go back and try the ramen and the specialty hot dogs. Dessert was delicious. They had the cheesecake with miso carmel, the best cheesecake I've ever had. First time visit, really late, I know. A little loud, early in the evening, I can just imagine, really loud when packed. We started with the house hotdog, doll was not crazy about it, but I thought it was really good. Very moist, slightly spicy with the peppers and mayo. We continued with the chef's sashimi platter which was very good, moist, fresh fish. We still had some room and ordered the Iwana roll. The best sushi so far. Sweet, savory, fresh, all in one bite. Kyatchi gets a lot of hype in the Twin Cities food scene, and arguably deserves it. The prices are a little bit more expensive than other Japanese restaurants around the twin cities, but not very much. And it's certainly way cheaper than the next tier up of sushi eateries, typically located in the fancy Lake Minnetonka / Wayzata pass-the-grey-poupon area of the metro. For creative, elegant, authentic quality, Kyatchi is the best you can do without a long drive or a lot of $$$. Some standouts: * Show me another Japanese joint famous for their hot dogs! They deserve the hype. (And don't cry to me about authenticity here. I've eaten some very interesting hot dogs in Japan.) * The fish quality is outstanding, even by very high standards in Minneapolis. The sashimi is cut nice and thick, but still melts in your mouth. Every piece of sushi you eat here will be memorable. * The happy hour is a great value for what you get, with some interesting options. Great way to try this place out without breaking the bank. Just had lunch here and wow! I had learned about how they sustainably source their fish so I had to stop by and give it a try. They did not disappoint!! Our server was so awesome and friendly! I wish I could remember her name but I didn't take the receipt and I'm still in a food coma state of mind. I had checked out the menu before visiting and already knew I wanted the pork belly Ramen and an Uni Nigiri roll. I've always wanted to try Uni but didn't want to wait till I make it to Japan. Since how the food is sourced I knew I could trust the quality. Wow! Sooo good! The texture was nice and creamy and it tasted like nothing I've ever had! I can't even really describe it. You'll have to try for yourself! Now for that heavenly bowl of Ramen. Once it arrived at our table, I knew I made the right choice. The broth had a deep rich brown color and the oils were just floating on top like a good broth should have. The Ajitsuke Tamago(egg)was hiding underneath a chunk of pork belly and I quickly plucked it free and broke it open to let the yoke mix with the broth and add even more flavor! I added some white pepper and Shichimi Togarashi to give it a little kick. The pork belly was tender and had the perfect amount of saltiness. The noodles were very tasty and there was plenty to be slurped up with much satisfaction! I try to save the Ajitsuke Tamago till the end since it's my favorite part but I couldn't help but eat it up. After I finished my Ramen I wasn't done yet. We ordered the Gyoza and it was so good!! They are house made and stuffed with Pork. The dipping sauce is also very very good. Unfortunately I did not save room for dessert!! Ugh... but next time I'm going to try the Orange rolled cake. It sounds sooo good. I will also try the Karaage! I've been to Kyatchi twice now and really enjoyed the atmosphere and food! It's a small restaurant that feels pretty intimate. The decor is kitschy - lots of cool baseball memorabilia. It's a treat just to look around the walls of the restaurant! The service feels personable and the staff was very friendly. When I sat at the bar we were served right away. The food is good! I love coming here because they have ramen and really good sake which makes my boyfriend happy & they serve sushi and hot dogs for me! I don't know of any other restaurant in Minneapolis serving Asian style hot dogs - I love them! I highly recommend the house dog or the avocado and egg dog. They also have rice bowls and a few fish and seafood dishes. The variety surprises me! Next time I come I'm hoping to catch Happy Hour - I hear it's good! read more

Came here last Friday and was actually disappointed in all the good reviews was expecting a higher bar with it. The sushi being mediocre at best but the service was great just couldn't justify it with the food being barely ok at best. I didn't think I could ever enjoy a plain sushi roll until coming to Kyatchi. There are a few major things that I really like about this sushi bar: - their partnering with Monterey Bay Aquarium: a really cool non-profit that advocates for the future of our oceans i.e. protecting marine life from overfishing and plastic waste. - their business with The Fish Guys: a Midwest premier seafood wholesale supplier that focuses on "green" cleaning and sanitizing methods, and ethical approaches to sustainability i.e. maintaining the world's fish supply. - their Seafood Watch certification via Monterey Bay Aquarium which ensures "best choice" and "good alternative" seafood - their no frills sushi rolls: no globs of spicy mayonnaise or eel sauce, no scattered tempura bits, etc. It's fish, rice, and maybe some avocado/vegetable/lemon juice, etc. They offer "bare" sushi rolls and they absolutely deliver. Kyatchi, which means "catch" in Japanese, has a baseball-themed interior. There are baseball uniform/jerseys hanging on the wall and a large baseball hanging over the bar. There are a good amount of tables to the right of the restaurant while the bar takes up the left side. Fun Fact: The owner/mastermind Chef Hide Tozawa used to be the personal chef of Tsuyoshi Nishioka - a baseball player for Japan's Hanshin Tigers, and a baseball player for the Minnesota Twins. Our server was very knowledgable of the menu and very helpful. She offered popular dishes and recommendations, and regularly checked up on our table. We ended up going with her appetizer recommendation: Kara-Age ($8). The menu describes it as "marinated and fried chicken cutlets served with lemon and Japanese mayo." The first bite was fantastic. The chicken was juicy, tender and hot. The lemon and Japanese mayo were great compliments. I ordered the Tataki Roll ($16). The menu describes "seared sockeye salmon, faux nagi sauce" on the outside, and "ebi mayo, cucumber, asparagus" on the inside. I was in absolute heaven. I felt like I had been Enlightened. The cocktail of flavors were ON POINT and so well-crafted that I had to force myself to eat slower. I was blown away by how FRESH the fish tasted. Is this what eating sushi in Japan is like? Is this what fish right out of the water tastes like? I'm willing to bet on it. The sushi was so good that I ordered another roll. I ordered the Ebi Mayo Roll ($5.75). The menu describes "cooked pink shrimp with Japanese mayo." Simple, like every other roll - but, packed with flavor. Kyatchi has totally changed my sushi game. I have always been that person who ordered the [Insert Name]/Speciality roll drenched in unagi sauce and loaded with tobiko because maki rolls were always "meh" or not enough for me. Came here for Saturday lunch. Tried the gyoza. Not their forte. It was thicker dough, and too burned. Dipping sauce for this was mediocre. The Hamachi tataki was delicious. Very delicate and flavorful. Ponzu sauce set it off. The Tai Shiso was dissapointing. I really enjoy a good snapper, but the flavor for this roll wasn't there. The splash of lemon dipping sauce tries to make up for it. The Suzuki pressed roll was perfect. Sea bass was fresh and complemented well with dipping sauce. So fun fact about me: I studied Japanese for six years and I just realized Kyatchi means "Catch" in Japanese... the baseball themed decor was cool but I didn't understand why until after I had already left the restaurant! Haha Overall I'd say my experience at Kyatchi was good! My friend and I were the first people in the restaurant when they opened at 4pm. The space isn't really that big, but the layout makes is feel pretty roomy. I really liked the Blend of Japanese and baseball themed decor as well! The food was a bit mixed though and maybe it was because of my own expectations but I'm not sure. The best things I had were the Yakisoba Dog (a hotdog with yakisoba noodles and sauce on top) and the Karaage (marinated fried chicken bites). These two dishes should have probably been the only things I ordered but I was curious about the menu so I got more! Haha I ended up getting the chirashi bowl and the sushi combo on the happy hour menu and I would have been better off without them. To me, they were both a bit forgettable in taste and didn't look as appealing as I have seen from other restaurants. My friend also got the avocado dog and it was so overstuffed that it kinda just...disintegrated and she ended up just scraping the toppings off and eating them separately. It's about time I came here! If it weren't for Kara D, it probably would have taken me another year to finally try it (I'm just too lazy to drive out to Minneapolis unless I made plans to meet someone). There's also plenty of street parking and if I remember correctly, it was all 2 hours. The restaurant is small but well laid out. There's a sushi bar to the right as you walk in and tables on the left. The decor is cute and how you imagine a Japanese restaurant to be but also not with the baseball influences. We had a hard time deciding what we wanted to order, everything sounded amazing! If only we could have had it all, guess we'll just have to come back ;) Finally, we ordered: - Uni (sea urchin) Nigiri - thank you Kara for making me try this! It is unlike anything I've ever had before. It had a slimy texture but it melted in my mouth and I really enjoyed it! I can't even describe the flavor, you just have to try it for yourself - Hotate Yuzu (scallop with yuzu paste) Roll - this wasn't a particularly memorable roll. I came in here with Ashley C during HH for a heavenly combo of sushi and hot dogs. Really tho. It took approx 3 years to narrow down what we wanted because everything looked so good. We finally confirmed with our very friendly server: yakisoba dog, hotate yuzu maki, uni nigiri, and tataki roll (subb'ed King Salmon). The food came up fast, to our delight (but not like, too fast, ya know?). The Yakisoba dog was so satisfying with soba noodles and Japanese mayo. The hot dog itself had more of a sausage texture, with made me feel like it was actual meat, yay. The hotate yuzu was good - the tartness of the yuzu balanced the sweetness of the scallop, yet I found it too bitter in some bites. I loved the tataki roll and am glad we went with the fattier king salmon. Omg and the Uni (sea urchin) - this has got to be the very best you can get in the cities. Masquerading behind their microwave? Avoid. Unless my experience was a one off, this place is concerning. I want them to succeed, and hope this feedback helps, but this was dismal. I would spend more time on this review but I'd overall like to forget about my experience here. I think management needs a reality check. Are you slopping out prepared-ahead food, and selling leftover (possibly past its prime) fish on happy hour menus? Would you, and do you, eat or even TRY your own food? I was shocked at how bad the food was and the evident lack of pride. Some dishes I simply couldn't believe were brought out. Utter mockery of what they're trying to make. Maybe make the menu smaller, focus on what you can do well. Full disclosure, I did not complain as I just wanted to leave. Be warned, fish was obviously not fresh, not cut properly, and was mixed with borderline rancid rice. I fell ill later in the night, with a powerful migraine and nausea. I am convinced it was the fish. What looks like a nice space, interesting menu, and quality operation seems to be in reality food that at best is made earlier in the day and sits around. Skewers - shiitake was just gross. Dusty, dry, nearly unrecognizable. Awful burnt taste. Others were unremarkable if not simply stale, seasoned, or interesting at all. Truly think these sit in a hotel pan all day, maybe even multiple days. It was surprising they brought these out. I do not think they should be serving these the way I got them. Katsu sandwich - a joke. Sadly worse than something you'd microwave or grab at a gas station. Don't think it had sauce, meat was gray/brown, lost appetite. Yeahhh...best sushi in the Twin Cities. This also includes their StP location in Lowertown (what was home to Tampopo - RIP). Seriously though - BEST SUSHI IN TOWN. Why is this? - the rice. Sounds silly, but the rice is one of the most important parts of quality sushi. If it's too gummy, if there's too much, if it's overly seasoned, the experience just...pardon my French, sucks. Kyatchi serves pretty quality rice, and they aren't using busted rice cookers either. You can tell because each grain just seems..perfect. Well seasoned, well cooked, well soaked, good quality rice....excellent. If your foundation sucks, the rest is going to be awful - so the rice being great is crucial. - the fish. I don't know about you, but hotate (scallop) is one of the best pieces of fish you can order for sushi ever. EVER. And Kyatchi's are like delicious pillows of tender perfection. Gyaddamn are they good. Fresh, HUGE, but not gross, wonderful texture, just the right amount of wasabi...just excellent. ALL their fish is excellent. If it's already seasoned, I don't even add more shoyu, I trust their sushi chef. Have yet to be let down. - the cuts of fish. Man....how many times have you gone to a Japanese restaurant, ordered nigiri, sashimi, or maki, and left still pretty hungry? Well, definitely me and definitely many times. Not so with Kyatchi. Their portions are perfect. The sashimi platter in particular is an EXCELLENT value and you get A TON of sashimi. Like almost too much for one person (almost). But then again, I'm a glutton. - the maki is good too! Actually, one of my favorite rolls at Kyatchi is completely vegetarian! I was contemplating dinner plans while sitting at Five Watt Coffee and looked across the street and saw Kyatchi. I walked over. It was early still so the place was empty. I saw they had pressed sushi which I love. I got the SUZUKI which is six pieces of sea bass, shiso leaf and black pepper, pressed. It was pretty decent, but not as good as the pressed sushi I had in Vancouver. I also ordered the TATAKI ROLL, which has seared sockeye salmon and faux nagi sauce on the outside and ebi mayo, cucumber and asparagus on the inside. I love me some sockeye salmon, but the fish here is not what you would describe as buttery. It's still a good roll though and I was glad for some sushi while in Minneapolis. read more

I totally didn't realize that it's the place right across the street from Nighthawks, but hey, this place is right across the street from Nighthawks! It's not a big place but it was only moderately busy when we stopped in and we were seated immediately. Foodwise, we ate everything we could fit. -Agedashi tofu. Very good. The cubes of tofu were big and square, with a hard crunchy coating fried on the outside. Honestly, the cubes were almost too big and the coating was so hard that it didn't really adhere to the outside of the cube once you dug in. That said, it was hot and delicious and served with a lovely side cup of dashi to pour all over the tofu. It was really tasty, which made up for everything above. The only other agedashi I've encountered that I like better is the one at Origami. But this was a very good representation and really tasty if you like tofu. -Ramen. We got the regular ramen and it was bomb. Everything I was craving and then some. There was a lovely deeply flavored broth with noodles that were cooked perfectly and not mushy. There was a perfectly soft half egg and some delicious pieces of pork belly. There were bamboo shoots and lemongrass, and it was really just lovely. -Sushi. The sushi here was very good, and we enjoyed especially the variety of salmon. One thing we've never had before was what they call pressed salmon, which turned out to be cubes of rice with thin slices of salmon on top with the thinnest slices of lemon all compressed into these small perfect cubes. You get six pieces per order and it was delicious. Nigiri was good, rolls were pretty good. We enjoyed that this is clearly a sushi chef that enjoys playing with flavors, and we enjoyed the adventure. -Dessert. We skipped it but it looked good. I wished there were more than two options. Other notes: -Open till midnight most nights! I must remember this for when I have late-night munchies and a bowl of ramen would hit the spot. -Beverage list was decent, definitely enough beers that we liked. Sake and such that you'd expect. Oh, and mad bonus points for the peach tea called "Machu Peach-u" tea. -Service was adequate but honestly kind of awkward. Our server would go too long between visits. He would do that kind of courtesy "everything tasting ok" stop by, but he would wait until we were almost done eating the dish before he asked. He was not natural with talking with us and seemed uncomfortable describing the special and answering questions. He DID have good menu knowledge and was able to answer all of our questions but it was not relaxing to interact with him. -Pet peeve: we sat for probably 10-15 minutes before getting water or being acknowledged by our server, and it was the hostess who brought the water finally. -We did receive profuse thank yous from the bar on our way out, which was nice. read more

Great location. Parking was easy and there are variety of stores around the restaurant. Amazing service, our waitress had provided some really awesome suggestions. The ramen noodles was great, the broth was about average, and the egg was amazing (it got sweet lava yolk). The price is higher than most of other Japanese restaurants in town but the quality is quite high as well so it balanced out. The fish tasted really fresh. My favorite part was probably the orange roll cake, it was a very refreshing dessert that you don't see often read more

Wait hotdogs and sushi!!!? The Japanese baseball themed restaurant is awesome! I think they have a fish tank with Swedish Fish!!! Which is decretive and brilliant! The restaurant staff are very knowledgeable what is on the menu. Everything on the menu looked really good. I mean if I could I would order one of everything. I did try a unique Yakisoba hotdog. Yakisoba Hotdog had Raman noodles on top with other ingredients and came with a side of potato salad. I would definitely recommend trying a Yakisoba hotdog. Also, I did try two different sushi rolls. The Negihama and masunosuke rolls. I would recommend those rolls to try. I will definitely come back and try more!!! read more

I was lucky to go to this place on Wednesday, because they were having a Happy Hour all day long. The atmosphere was pretty cozy and modern. The food overall was too strong: too much salt and too much sauce. My friend couldn't finish eating Kaisen yakisoba even with 4 glasses of water. My chirashi was okay. Ika Shogayaki (grilled flying squid) didn't seem it was grilled: more like broiled with salty pasta water. And the sauce was just plain mayonnaise. The butabara (Berkshire pork belly) and Gyuhire (Limousin beef tenderloin) had really nice smoky scent. The pork belly had too much fat though. Overall I'm glad we came during happy hour and saved few bucks for the dinner we had. Orange rolled cake was fluffy and had bitter sweet flavor to it. The orange reduction/jam was too sour for my friend. read more

I've eaten here several times since they opened and have never been disappointed. The hours are not convenient for me, so I my visits are intermittent. I'm not quite sure how to rate it against other sushi places, so I'll just land on four stars. Service is friendly, with a hot towel before ordering. The menu is deceptively small, as they serve many items and the specials on the wall add to the offerings. Most recently, I had the Yakisoba Stir Fry. A noodle dish, with seafood and an egg on top; covered in sauce. Yum! And just the right amount of food for me. See photo. Parking is on the street.
