First, props to the kids that run this they do a great job. I found this station about a year after I moved to Sac in 2015. As someone who had long since moved away from listening to radio to Spotify/Pandora/YouTube/iTunes, I was so stoked to turn on 91.5. I have to give this station a four out of five only because a few years back it was the greatest thing to ever happen to radio. You never knew what was gonna come next and some of the songs were super deep cuts, rare, and obscure. A few years back they changed and just played mainstream trash. No it's kind of back to what it was. The song rotation is some what as cool as it was before. But now most of the music is pop. Even the indie stuff they play are like the most well knew songs. No more deep cuts. No more rarities. I wish they'd go back. read more

Whenever I'm in Sacramento, this is my station. The playlists are as enjoyable as the banter amongst the El Camino High School Kyds who run it ("It's spelled with a y 'cause Disney already took it"). Advantageous to their age, these kyds have their fingers on the pulse of delectable aural offerings -- both that which forms today's musical zeitgeist, and from other eras. As for banter, sometimes you'll get an, "After my Mom dropped me off..." story, or a kyd's bff shows up and a conversation ensues, more kyds pile in, more banter, and then someone plays a song or reminds a new member to the conversation to move closer to the mike. Other times the station simply goes silent because the kyd had to get to class and the next DJ hadn't shown up yet. The station remains dead until a new DJ steps in. Completely reminds me of my pals and I from those days. How often do you get this type of genuine energy from a radio station? Chalk it up to true youth at play/work. Makes for a fun station. I wish they could afford an internet stream so I could listen more often as I'm no longer local. They had a stream, but it went away. They are community supported, so please show your support during their fundraisers! read more

Since the music scene is non existent in Sacramento now (KWOD was the last semi decent thing here & yes I said semi because it is totally true), this is where I get to hear some good music, some things I haven't heard in a long time (like Brand New!). The kid djs crack me up when they talk about playing their xbox games or their witty banter and yet I wish that there was this type of program at my high school when I was a kid. Next to KDVS, this is my favorite station for music. They have changed a bit over the past few years; two years ago it was pretty much all indie/underground/cool stuff, and now it is a very eclectic mix. During this last summer, they got a little lazy with the programming, and played Fleetwood Mac and Heart several times every hour. Other than that, it is a great place to hear a wide variety of great songs. An extra star for playing programs from Alternative Radio during the weekends. So the station doesn't just rock, but you can learn stuff too. I just wish they would produce a playlist or at least announce who it is they are playing. But hey, the kids are alright. read more

There is nothing I'm more envious than the students who get to be involved in this radio station. The station itself is the source for MANY new musical finds for me *and* it thrills me to know that these teenagers get to dive into the broadcasting industry at such a young age. So far, I love this station, though randomly they played mainstream country and then Bill Cosby stand up, which I tuned out. Otherwise, it's a brutal station and I always get my fix of black metal, but no punk rock? That would be my only request, incorporate some hardcore and punk rock. This is one of the best radio stations I've ever heard. Unlike the advertising industry-oriented commercial stations in Sacramento (i.e., the complete merger of payola and music), KYDS play the kind of music that you really want to hear. Don't be concerned about their age, these guys and gals know a lot about good music from many eras. Unlike 98.5 (for example) KYDS don't have ignoramus sounding DJs that prattle on and on instead of rocking out. They play songs I love from famous groups and bands but that were B-sides or at least weren't as ruthlessly promoted by the commercial stations back in the day. Great job KYDS! And to everyone reading this, they need donations from time to time to pay for staying on the air. It is incredibly cheap to support them, these high school kids love what they're doing, and based on a reading of the class website they are getting a great education. read more

KYDS makes commuting to work better. When every other radio station is playing the same crap over and over (here's looking at you 106.5), I never know what I will hear on KYDS, often times things I have never heard played on the radio. Wow. I was randomly radio-dial surfing in my car yesterday and I heard what sounded like Marilyn Manson. I hadn't heard the song before and it was interesting, so I kept listening. The song ended and then what came on? -- The Beatles, "It's getting better all the time!" I actually yelled out loud in my car in surprise because that was the LAST thing I ever expected to hear for the next song! So I kept listening, and was rewarded with: Smashing Pumpkins, followed by some kind of saxophone jazz number, followed by 70's disco instrumental synth, and then some heavy metal. Dude, that is the best music mix I've heard since the Monday 6pm show on KPOO in San Francisco. Had to look up the station when I got home. You can bet I'll be listening again! read more

Jesuit High School, which I attended, has nothing on these cats. Who the hell comes up with the excellent play lists? I thought the youngsters were totally immersed in touchscreen reality, where melody and lyrics are completely absent. You kids have restored my faith in humanity, and you don't know how important that is in my autumnal years. Ain't nothing better than KYDS. You can forget commercial radio and the endless inane banter. Put the iphone down now and crank up the volume. I found this station by accident while tuning my exercise machine radio, now I listen to it all the time. This sort of eclectic musical mix is right up my alley. I've been listening to KDVS for years - I like the freeform format - but recently I discovered KYDS, which I love just as much. And that's a high compliment, as KDVS is a student-run station from U.C. Davis and has been on the air since the mid-'60s - whereas KYDS is based at El Camino high school! KYDS is a great station, run very professionally (perhaps even more so than KDVS) and the kyds working as DJs always have a great playlist. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more

KYDS is my favorite music station. I love the randomness of it. So different from the corporate stations that must be forced to play the same 20 songs over and over again. This station will go from death metal to polka then rap and even country and everything in between. Sometimes it is hilarious and if someone is in the car with you they are looking at you confused like "WTF are you listening to?" But I like to try new things and expand my music knowledge. So if you are not afraid to think outside your own genre give it a try. The DJs are funny as well, their public service messages are so dull it is comical. I will keep listening and sporting my KYDS t-shirt proudly. Long live independent radio stations! read more

After have worked for K.Y.D.S. 91.5 FM in the late 1990's during such time we had students that had come into the Radio & Television class in the impression that radio and television class meant they were going to watch t.v. and listen to the radio. Oh were they all surprised the first day they walked into that class room after it had been renovated,. Prior to that the radio station was in a Portable class room on the basket ball court. The radio station was divided from the class room by a partial wall divider. After a semester of that we were allowed to move into our new digs that had the up-stairs Television Control Booth. The down stairs had a closed door room that was perfect for a studio. So at the time the Chief Engineer Tim who also use to be on the sane radio station as a High School student. Who also moved on to work for K.F.B.K.1530 AM, and K.S.T.E. 450 AM in Sacramento, California. At the time we just a little bit of equipment and some tables. But between Ed Santalanos (Instructor), and Tim (Chief Engineer), David Johnson (Station Manager At The Time), They really fixed the on air studio really nice and moved that equipment to the back production studio. In the On Air Studio we had all new digital equipment from the CD players to the new Mixing Console, to microphones, and a new automation program for the station when it would finally change from a day parted station to a fully 24 hours a day 7 days a week station. At the time another community access radio station who were only on cable television only also would take over KYDS 91.5FM air waves at night while the school was closed. So when we got the new automation program we were able to take control all together. I remember the promotions that we did from LPGA Golf Tournaments, School events all kinds of things. Well I surely really wanna thank Mr.S our teacher and David Johnson our Station Manager at the time. Without him KYDS may not be what it is today. I wish nothing but the best for KYDS 91. FM but pick a format stop jumping around, At lest make it go up the musical pyramid that David Johnson taught us how to do. Start off with slow easy listening music in the morning and move up to Harder music towards the afternoon. The Musical Pyramid. read more
