After a full dinner at Rockville Town Square, we wandered aimlessly to burn off the calories and found ourselves at Kyoto Matcha (is it Kyoto or Kyo?). The allure of matcha soft serve was overwhelming so we stopped in just to give it a try. And we weren't disappointed at all! The matcha soft serve was cool and bitter, perfectly flavorful without the powdery grit of some matchas. A work of art on a oreo-ish black cone, that's what it looked and tasted like. I cannot wait to try more items on this menu. Yum! We decided to try the cream puff, tiramisu, chocolate cake and the matcha roll. Our eyes were definitely bigger than our tummies, but also we have ZERO regrets. The cream puff had a crunchy outer layer and a creamy vanilla inner layer that paired so well. The tiramisu had a nice dusting of cocoa and had a great rich mocha like flavor. The matcha roll was so light, I couldn't believe I was eating cake. The chocolate cake, probably my favorite, was amazing. We were fighting over last bites of the chocolate cake. Everything was so rich in their individual flavors, without over powering or being too sweet. I almost can't describe it perfectly enough to do it it's full justice. You just have to try it. I was really excited to try this place but I wasn't extremely impressed. The best part of our order was definitely the hojicha ice cream. That was amazing and definitely worth trying. It kind of tasted like tea? The Matcha vanilla swirl ice cream didn't taste like much, but I had already tried the hojicha so maybe it got overshadowed? I really was not a fan of the Boba cake. I was very excited, but I don't think the Boba had as much flavor as I wish It did and I wasn't a fan of the texture of the cake. The Boba itself in the drink was also not a flavorful as I wish I was, though the Matcha definitely was strong in a good way. The drink was very flavorful so I appreciated that. Perhaps it was just a tad too strong, which is very rare for me to say, but I think it could have been a little more balanced with maybe syrup or Boba that had a stronger taste. I would probably come back here solely for the ice cream if I was in the area. This place is a little far, so I'm not sure that I would make the trek out here solely for the ice cream, but i can't say I wouldn't. read more

Got some soft serve here. My specific order was matcha with corn flake topping. It was just a little too pricey in my opinion for soft serve. Between the time you order and receive your order, it's probably less than 10 minutes. - Environmentally friendly. Rather than using plastic utensils, they use wood or bamboo (not certain which one). - Seating. They have a decent amount of tables and chairs and their staff don't rush you, either. - Location. Conveniently located in the area, especially to other restaurants, shops and cafes. What's not - Savory menu items. It had been awhile since my last review of Kyoto matcha! A lot of changes have been implemented but most importantly they now serve desserts with influences of ube! We had the matcha soft serve, ube towel cake, passion fruit and peach layered cake. This place is now primarily self-serve. So it went a bit down hill because I appreciated not having to pick up my own orders previously. There's also a self-ordering machine if you want to cut the line. Ambiance still feels cozy yet beautifully decorated. It's a nice place to sit down and talk. There's also limited outdoor seating. I ordered the matcha latte float with the mixed swirl and added boba. I ordered 100% sugar but I think I'll do 70% next time because it was just a tad bit sweeter than my liking. The ice cream basically drowned in the drink and because of that, I couldn't eat the ice cream first otherwise it would have spilled when opening the top. I ended up just drinking some of the drink before opening it to enjoy the ice cream. While I think that the idea of this float is neat, you'd be better off just getting the drink itself or the ice cream itself, instead of this hybrid. The drink was good and satisfies the craving for dessert/boba, but I would recommend getting one or the other since the ice cream practically drowns and ends up being mixed into the drink anyway. Stopped by this place since it was right next to the Ice Rink outside. As a brief respite after driving for so long, might as well get something to treat yourself up with right? Well that's definitely what I did in true Jon fashion here. I got a course of things to try out since I'm here to pass the time, so I ended up getting a Matcha Latte Float, A Sakura Drop, and A Matcha Cream Puff. First I will have to say that the float was just the right amount of sweetness going into it. There's milk, matcha and just matcha ice cream ( you can get mixed if you prefer ) and all just make a wonderful combination. Sadly, I finished it a lot sooner so if you do end up getting this just keep in mind that they also add ice before adding in ice cream. If you want more bang for your buck, I'd get the Matcha Lemonade or the standard Matcha w/ Boba instead. The Sakura Drop or Raindrop Cake was interesting. If you like the texture of jello and something that's not really calorific, this one is for you. Made with Agar Powder and water, this almost has no calories. The kinako or the roasted soy bean flour and kuromitsu ( black sugar syrup ) makes up for it instead. A very light and sweet dessert, I think it's worth trying out at least 1-2 pieces. The Matcha Cream Puff was also good but it was a bit stale. Perhaps it's been out for a bit of time but it is what it is. The Matcha cream filling wasn't too sweet but it was enjoyable to eat. One thing to note is there is a kiosk to order as well unless you like to order up front too. Tables are limited but come early enough like I did mid afternoon and you'll have a more pleasant experience. The wait can be a bit long but can you really complain? Everything looks exactly what it shows on the menu. A very big plus in my book. If you like anything Matcha, check it out. read more

This is my go to dessert spot. I have seen this place grow from their first store in Rockville Town Center to now their various locations within the DMV and outside. I have yet to try the ones in Virginia, but they never disappoint. I have tried many things on their menu and seen their menu change. Matcha is something that is a love it or hate it. Their desserts are definitely to the asian standard of "not too sweet". I've tried their matcha yuzu ( which I don't think is on their menu anymore), matcha float matcha frappe, iced matcha, matcha tiramisu, matcha crepe cake, matcha soft serve, and their hojicha. The interior of the rockville location has beautiful cherry blossom decor on their ceiling and a cute anime painting of our favorite characters on their wall. The rockville location also shares space with a boba pop. When the weather is nice and warm, they will open the store front doors to create an open concept seating where the "patio" connects to the interior.
