Central station for the city of Köln (Cologne), it is one of the busiest rail stations in Germany. It is quite large and I got to explore it a bit today thanks to a delay by the wonderful folks at Deutsche Bahn. My tip to you is that if you do have an extended layover here, use the luggage storage for your suitcases and step outside. You'll find the tremendous Kölner Dom that is worth photographing and touring. I did not have THAT much time so it was pictures only today. The train station has coffee (including Starbucks, yuck), pastries, lots of restaurants, restrooms, a waiting lounge if your train ticket includes that service, car rentals, ATMs and yes, the Ibis hotel. This was my home base central train station when I lived in Germany. It's a huge station. Buying tickets was always easy. They have the convenience of using machines for more regional trips. They also had many agents to help with buying tickets for cross country travels. This was the train station that I always felt was my home. It was where I left to go to so many countries all over eastern and western Europe. I took trains from here to Paris, Berlin, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, and all over Germany. It was also the station I always came in from Frankfurt. I would often take flights all over the world and fly back through Frankfurt and take the one hour train from Frankfurt to cologne. It's very easy to navigate through this train station. It's a huge hub and it's definitely made and set up for international travelers. read more

We arrived at this station for our day trip to Cologne, station itself is very nice, clean & easy to walk around in. Located right in the middle of town it is easy & convenient to use. While waiting on our way back I got me a drink from McDonald's since I knew it would have ice it was just right, plenty of food options. We also got a Butter pretzel from the place that seems to only sell pretzels of all kinds they look delicious we kept it simple with the butter pretzel it was hard, did not like it. Looking for some help with our tickets the service area for this was not bad quick enough although they couldn't make any changes to our tickets. The Köln HBF is not particularly special or unique or interesting, but it's special to me, because of what it means to me. The first time I ever stepped foot in Köln was when I got off a train at this station. Moments later I was greeted by the sight of Kölner Dom, which still takes my breath away every time I see it. While this isn't any cleaner or more exciting than any other run-of-the-mill HBF, it is comfortable and familiar to me, and every time I am here, I can't help but be overcome with that same feeling I felt the first time I arrived in Germany. Big train station in Cologne. Lots of trains to/from all over. Its in a great location across the street from the cathederal and that end of the shopping zone (and in season the cathederals christmas market) it has pleanty of plances to eat, I got a good pretzle while waiting for my train. This is a very busy German train station but it's clean, well laid out, and organized in a way that it's easy to find your train. Lots of good food options (my personal favorite is Ditsch) as well as a nice mini drugstore / supermarket that sells the wonderful German Labello lip balm! Since this station is a major transfer hub, I always try to make time to run grab a pretzel and a few lip balms while passing through. Since it's a major hub, that means it's always very busy during all hours of the day and night -- tourists, watch your bags for pickpockets. There an Ibis hotel that is literally inside the station (a great place to stay if you have an early morning train), and the gorgeous cathedral is right outside the front door of the station. If you have at least 10 minutes between trains, at least pop out the front door and take a look at the gorgeous landmark. Minus a star for the straight up JERK at the DB ticket desk who pretended not to understand our German (we were at least TRYING, dude) and then proceeded to create a huge scene and yell at us in German, but finishing with "you need to go back to Hollywood!!" in perfect English. Koln Hauptbahnhof is the central train station in Cologne and it is literally in the centre of town, a short 15 minute train ride from the airport. The train services are a mixture of local S-Bahn trains, local commuter services (in this crowded part of Germany, Dusseldorf and Bonn are less than 30 minutes away) and longer distance trains. Be careful as all 3 kinds of services share platforms and if you step on the wrong train, you could end up a bit further from your destination than you bargained for! I love the fact that Germans are trusted to buy tickets for their journeys. Unlike London with barriers adding to commuter congestion at train stations, you buy a ticket and stroll onto the platform in Germany However, I would strongly advise you to do a little research into your destination and what sort of ticket you need. The ticket machines will translate on-screen instructions into an impressive number of languges but it's still confusing as to what ticket you're eligible to buy, the exact limits of the travel zones and the station names are still in German e.g. Koln airport is down as Flughafen The station itself has a great selection of eateries and if that's not enough, you only need to step outside to see Cologne's main tourist attraction, Kolner Dom (cathedral) with its array of tourist friendly businesses nearby The U-Bahn station also takes you to many destinations within the city and is located just under the station read more

Up until recently my only experience of this place was sitting on a train as it stopped here on its way from Frankfurt to Amsterdam. However, one time as I was sitting in the train I realised that I actually wanted to have a look around, but since my ticket took me to Amsterdam I was content with just looking out the window and wondering what might have been. Well, I have now been to Cologne, which ment I got off the train here. The station itself has a rather new feeling about it, and it certainly isn't anywere near as ugly as some stations that I have seen. However it doesn't have any historic aspect about it - it is basically functional. Like many of the major railway stations there is a maze of corridors underneath with a heap of shops and what not (and also a bar, and a supermarket). However, it is fairly easy to get around, and also have a platform underground for the subway. Oh, and it is next to the cathedral so you get a pretty impressive look at the place as you enter and leave. read more

The station in Cologne is actually a very nice and easy to navigate station but it can get extremely crowded, especially during rush hour. This particular station has plenty of restaurants, eateries and a ton of connection to multiple European cities. I will say that there is a stellar cathedral right as you walk outside of the station that is more than photo worthy so make sure you plan accordingly. Overall, a great place with excellent connections, especially if looking to catch some ICE to other places. read more

Just like most central stations around Europe and Germany you will most likely get off here if you are coming from another city into Cologne. Place is very central (obviously), and if you don't have a lot of time but still want to do some sightseeing I recommend you walk out and see the Cathedral (the main landmark and just a few steps away from the station). Several options of shopping, food and free WiFi. Great connections for local S-Bahn (metro) and trains to nearby cities. read more

The main station took you near to all the amazing sightseeing in Cologne. The station isn't as huge as the one in Berlin, but it is surely as busy as one. The people come and go. You could see many different trains from different places. Inside the station offers lots of different stuff, café, restaurant isn't different to find here. If you in the mood to do something, there are many shops for that. If you don't want to carry you luggage to go around the places. Since put them into the locker inside the station. It's a bit pricy though. There is still some part I don't really like here. For example, it could take some time to find the direction you want to go. Especially station is always busy. And serval place inside the station it does look really dirty. And hard to ignore. I really hope they can take a bit more care about that. At the end, I like the station. In the way, it is very nice place for photography. It really doesn't matter when. It always got its own highlight. read more

This station functions quite well. The central location beside Domkirke is very convenient making it a great entree for a visit to this lovely city. The operations run smoothly as connections are very good. Ticketing is relatively easy either using the handy kiosks or the efficient manned office. The facility is nice enough and well kept with a reasonable number of conveniences available. The approach to the station is easy on foot and not bad via car. Navigating the facility is relatively facile and logical in spite of its size. The options to various destinations in Germany and beyond are pretty good. read more

Right near the cathedral (The Dom), this is a wonderful piece of architecture. It's quite epic and beautiful inside. You don't need a ticket to enter and go on the track to see what it looks like with its metal skeleton. As a tip, there is a cheap and 20 minute train to Dusseldorf. I would recommend doing that city for a day or two if you have time in Cologne. read more

The Köln Hbf was awesome! I was in Cologne for 10 days in November 2017. I flew into Frankfurt from Canada and took the train from the Frankfurt airport to the Köln Hbf (actually, we accidentally went to Dusseldorf first because the guy who said he knew where he was going didn't know where he was going, but whatever). Our group stayed at a hostel very near the train station and ended up at the train station for various reasons throughout our stay. In fact, I could see the train station from my room at the hostel! Köln Hbf is more than just a train station. It's a mall with an awesome food court. I grabbed food from various restaurants in the station. And I went to the drug store a couple of times. And I found an awesome shoe store where I ended up buying four pairs of shoes that I then had to figure out how to get home. Köln Hbf is located in a perfect part of the city for seeing the cathedral. You walk out the door and the cathedral is literally right there, towering over you. Plus, you're only a short walk to multiple hotels (there's even a hotel within the train station), restaurants, and stores. Plus, the plaza in front of the train station (beside the cathedral) is nice, with lots of outdoor seating if it's a nice day. One thing that stood out to me, probably because I'm from Canada, was the police presence at the train station. There was even a temporary police station set up​ outside the station, and there always seemed to be a ton of police officers walking around, keeping an eye on everything. Because of that, it felt very safe to be there (although I wondered why the police were needed in the first place). Since I ended up visiting the station over a dozen times and rode trains to/from the station at least 4-5 of my 10 days in Cologne, I got to know it quite well and could navigate it without looking at the maps. But, if you aren't sure where to go, there are lots of directories and info desks to help you. Just remember to stand to the side of the hallways if you're not sure where to go, as the rush of people in the middle of the hallways will run you over. read more

Pretty clean and organized and there's a few store and smaller restaurants in there. Fast ICE is quite pricey but no rainy and snowy late nights it's quite worth it in my opinion. Not packs and decent service and staffs. Signs are decently done and put. read more

There's a drugstore for you. * If you organize your next trip well, this place will not only make sure you get to your destination. You may get a makeover in the process too. Yes, of course - there are trains and subways that leave from here as well. There's lots of ticket counters, so you are unlikely going to spend much time waiting. There's a huge bathroom area that is being cleaned around the clock (need some coins here though). One side opens up to the DOM, the main tourist attraction in Cologne. The other side opens to the Rhein (with a 3 minute walk). There's plenty of parking spots around the station for short term parkers. read more

Wow! Excellent train station where the train station has so really many restaurants and shops. It is a destination also. I liked Meister Bock and got some sausages. Very tasty! Very busy nice clean. Excellent station! We took the train from the airport and then the high speed train to Amsterdam. Mostly easy except for standing at the wrong end of the platform so everyone got on the train ahead of us. Stand by all the people who are waiting for the train obviously. Run outside and see the giant church - fantastic! read more

Koln Hauptbahnhof is for the most part a typical large German station, with a busy underground concourse full of shops and snack bars. I have always found this aspect of their stations unattractive and unappealing. There a lot of very positive things about this station though: - The views of the awesome Dom (particularly the view as you exit the station - some newcomers jaws must drop..I wish I could better remember my first impression). -Central location. Most stations I have been to in Germany have been a bit of a trek from the central part of town. While they are not as inconvenient as an easyjet airport arrival, as a visitor not having to lug my bags into town was appreciated. -The station is important enough to be on many routes internal to Germany (5th busiest station in the country) and the links to the Eurostar make this city a door to Germany. You can get here faster than you can get to Cornwall! (And for not much more money if you book in advance) read more

Best part of this train station is the view of Kölner Dom (cathedral) as you exit. First time I looked up through those windows I was gobsmacked. The station itself has some interesting architecture, its kept pretty clean, has some decent shopping and food options. And I like its central location with easy access to local transportation, even car rentals. Its a safe place with good security, but not all the gates and check points that create bottlenecks at the UK stations. Aerostar has a cheap line from London to Cologne, if you're diggin some Chunnel action. It's the gateway to Germany, and always has something to do. read more

Really nice train station full of shops and restaurants. I had issues getting to this train station from the airport only because the automated ticket machine did not except credit cards. I am not sure if the problem exists here. Just to be safe you may want to have some euros on hand. read more
