Total fitness had an offer on over Christmas 12 days for £12 so I thought I would give it a whirl…read moreas I am back in my home town for crimbo. The gym itself is huge with downstairs which includes a mini gym with fitness equipment (treadmills, cross trainers etc) and a games section (table tennis) nice cafe on the left as you walk in which serves home made snacks & drinks which over looks the pool (nice touch) Changing rooms are clean and big with children's facilities inside. Toys and a crèche area (handy for mums) when they are getting themselves ready. There is also a nursery attached to the gym (Jo Jo's) which is open from 7am-7pm. Upstairs there is a large fitness area with weights & to the right 2 squash courts which are below but they can be seen from upstairs. There is a ladies only gym, spinning studio and 2 studios which have classes. This gym has everything & it's very clean. I am impressed! They only thing that stops me giving it 5 stars is the push on/off showers ( drives me crazy and I always end up with soap in my eyes trying to switch it back on ) The gym also has a large pool, jacuzzi, steam rooms and sauna. Everything you could ask for. The prices seem to be quite expensive but I think they have offers on so watch out for them. Adult - £39.99 PM Student - £32.50 PM Over 55 - £35.00 PM They have different prices for family's and under 17s ( these prices are based on their website on 28/12/15 ) It's an expensive gym but nice! If I was living round here full time I would join :) The gym also has a beauty salon inside too which do nails and hair. Oh yeah & the staff & PTS are nice too.

Boo to gym chains and their unclear T&Cs!…read more Just to be straight I have never been, nor will be a member of Total Fitness. I'm currently looking for a new gym and took advantage of the free introductory day pass offered on the Total Fitness website, but I wish I hadn't bothered. The gym itself is humongous: three pools, three gym areas, three studio spaces, juice bar, hairdressers, beauticians and sauna/steam rooms. It's got all the charm of an aircraft hangar, but lets be honest it's a gym, who cares?! I was genuinely excited about my trial, as they seem to have a good rota of classes and the the price was mid-range. I was willing to overlook the fact that one out of every 4 or 5 machines was either out of order or squeaking like it was on its way to being so. And I also wasn't overly precious when only one of the lights in the 'Mind and Body' studio worked and I overheard the teachers joking about the leaking roof, as the lighting kind of complemented the Pilates class and the scaffolding in the corner gave me hope that it was on the 'to-do' list. What really annoyed me was the fact that when I went to the sales desk to join I was told that a six month contract bumps the price up from a student rate by £15 a month! So basically I'd be paying for 9 months regardless. Not cool Total Fitness.

On arrival the view of the hotel from outside was breathtaking and this didn't falter on the inside either. I loved the tudor style and this was carried out throughout. I did have a slight hiccup on the checking in as when one of the girls came on to the coach to give us our checking in documentation mine wasn't there, (but that wasn't a problem, plus this possibly due to them having 5 coaches in on the same day and my documentation seemed to have been put in another basket), once they had checked everyone in they then checked me in. It didn't bother me as they did apologise and I could see that they were very busy. Before I made my way to my room, a mince pie and a glass of mulled wine was available in the Grove Restaurant and I was shown my dining place for the week. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with the theme of christmas. When I finally got to my room I wasn't in the main building, I was just outside in the courtyard rooms. The view was nice, out on to the courtyard garden itself. My room was lovely, spacious and light, very clean & tidy, the bathroom was also spotless. Plenty of complimentary tea & coffee (very surprised). I did have a slight problem in the bathroom (being that I flooded it monday evening) there was a hole in my shower pipe and it was shooting water out side ways with the pressure of the water moving the curtain. So Tuesday morning after breakfast & before going on the coach tour, I popped up to reception to inform them, they were absolutely fine and said they would have a look at it, within 5 minutes of informing them I had realised I'd left something in my room and quickly popped back to get it & they were already there looking at my shower. When I came back from the tour the receptionist called me across and informed me that I have a new shower. (I was very impressed with how they handled this). Alvaston Hall offer breakfast, lunch & dinner, breakfast & dinner were served in the Grove Restaurant and if you required lunch this was available in the Stable Bar which is next to the leisure complex. I never had lunch in the hotel as I was always out on a coach tour until mid afternoon. In the evenings after dinner Alvaston Hall provided us with fantastic caberet entertainment until midnight. The girls (Kate, Holly, Jamie) always made me feel welcome when the disco started at around 11pm becuase they got me up on the dance floor. The drinks were reasonable the bonus being you never had to leave your seat as they had a designated Bar Waiter. Within the restaurant we all had a designated waiter & waitress, my table we had Danny & Michaela, I was very impressed with Danny as by Tuesday evening he was automatically bringing me decaf coffee and he was very polite & helpful. The leisure complex was very modern and well thought out with Sauna, Steam Room, Jacuzzi & Tropicarium, all these were within my break cost but if you require any of the treatments these were extra, (I didn't take the opportunity to do these, as I thought they were just a tad expensive for me) otherwise the treatments sounded very nice indeed. The swimming pool was lovely & clear. Overall the week at Alvaston Hall was lovely, they made me very welcome and I think I will be back, but I think I'll bring someone next time.

For me the main attraction is the pool which is free from kids after 630 for either a fitness swim or a relaxing swim. The lighting in the pool area is chilled out and you can swim directly from the inside pool to the outside pool which is great for the summer and the winter! Upstairs there's an extensive spa area with sauna, fire and ice room, steam room and salt steam room, plus the infinity pool! The gym is well equipped and has a movie room where you can watch a film while you workout. As with many gyms these days the free weights area is too small and over crowded with no enforcement of gym etiquette, since most gyms suffer from this I've not marked them down :) The restaurant serves an interesting Asian fusion menu which is reasonably priced, delicious and does a good job of creating an intimate atmosphere.
