The museum is small but packed with a lot of historical artifacts. My preschooler was enamored with the wooden toy train set and wouldn't stop playing. It was cool to check out the trains outside, and I was surprised to find out that the yellow caboose was actually a little library. I read two Thomas the Train books to my kiddo in there. :) The bathroom is clean, and the inside of the museum is air-conditioned, so it was very comfortable on a hot summer day.

It's a railroad museum with a few railroad cars and a small museum displaying vintage items, models, and what not. The curator is very passionate about this museum and locomotives and can give you a detailed explanation or tour about, well, anything railroad. And the best part? It's all free! But still strongly consider donating or supporting via their gift shop, this is a gem within Lomita and we gotta make sure it stays around for a long time. They also allow for venue renting of the grassy space and across the street as well for any events you want so keep that in mind as well! Small parking lot but there's plenty of street parking too!

We really appreciated the detail & time he spent with us. Then we learned about the Webb Space Telescope - a docent who was a retired Aerospace engineer took about 20 minutes to talk to us about it, we also learned a few things about the Voyagers (1 and 2). I feel I learned more about space travel in the 20 minutes I spent with him than all the years I was in school. There are also awesome artifacts (some for sale), books & model airplanes for purchase. I also really enjoyed the Women in Flight exhibit about women pilots & astronauts.

And they were absolutely darling! We were inspired to go visit other of Thomas Dambo's trolls after this visit. The gardens themselves are striking. Wide open spaces, beautiful greens, and lots of thought given to the way you move through the regions. It is such a special place. The gardens are easy to find. You'll find ample signage from the freeway. Plenty of free parking in the dedicated lot, and good dining options nearby if you're visiting during meal times.

We enjoyed wandering through the stunning gardens, admiring the variety of trees, plants and flowers, and even watching the playful squirrels along the way. I loved the rose garden and its beautiful scent. We packed a picnic and enjoyed a delicious charcuterie board while relaxing in one of the shaded areas, which made the visit even more special. We also purchased tickets to the butterfly garden, and it was such a fun experience--definitely worth it! Everyone we encountered was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful. As we were leaving, they were setting up for the Thursday evening Music in the Garden event, which looked like so much fun. We'll definitely be coming back to experience that one day as well. The children's section is particularly impressive, featuring a massive selection of reading materials and a dedicated playground area that keeps kids entertained. It is the perfect local spot for a productive afternoon or a fun family outing. The weekly programming is fantastic, especially the monthly Chinese story time. We recently attended a session led by Lily, who was wonderful with the children. She used a great mix of storytelling about caterpillars and fruit along with high-energy songs and movement. It was such a joy to watch my granddaughter get involved and follow along with all the actions. The facility is very well-designed for convenience, including the easy underground parking right beneath the building. Whether you are looking for a quiet place to read or an engaging activity for the grandkids, this library is a true gem in the Peninsula area. Anyway, for those not in the know, Chen Art Gallery is tucked away in the Sunrider office building. You have to call to make an appointment and parking is free on the street. But it's all free so book away! Anyway, once you're in, there's a heavy emphasis on no phones or photography, and you'll discover why once you step foot inside. Holly was an amazing tour guide and knows her Chinese history really well, better than most of us probably. Anyway, where to even start? There's 15 rooms of artifacts from all dynasties of China, as young as Qing dynasty up to the 19th century to as old as 3000BC. And you'll be seeing things from authentic thrones to lavish silk embroideries to beautiful jade to sculptures to ceramics to gold, gold and more gold. Everything is carefully curated and honestly, if photos got out, big museums might hound them to borrow their exhibits hah! Anyway, you will be blown away by the sheer proportion of this lowkey museum/art gallery and by the sheer quantity AND quality of everything in here. I do appreciate art. The space is small, but i was expecting more exhibits. Since the visit was timed, it was nice not having to rush while taking fun selfies and welfies. The caviar tin can ball pit felt a little dirty which was expected. Note: it is a little challenging (and comical) getting out of that ball pit! Staff member was really friendly. The exhibit ends at Del Amo mall soon and is moving to another location.

The Museum is in Old Torrance, across the street from Eat at Rudy's diner. It's housed in a…read moregorgeous vintage building which was the former library. (See photos.) I spotted the sign on the door last Sunday as I was leaving Rudy's: it said Open and Free. I was there in a shot, haha. It's free, yes, but donations are accepted. There's a glass jar by the door that held a bunch of dollar bills. The museum survives completely on donations, in fact. The city maintains the building & the grounds, but other than that they are on their own. So I contributed a ten spot on my first visit. The best part other than the cool old objects on view (see photos) was my conversation with the volunteer lady at the front desk. We talked for a long while. I got info on a couple of upcoming events of interest to me: A walking tour of Old Torrance, and the Fall tour of historic homes. The lady on duty (wish I'd gotten her name) and I decided that, with the price of gas so high, people should explore areas close to home....because there is much to be discovered right under our noses if we take the time to look around. I had a wonderful afternoon in Torrance that day, practically right in my own back yard. Louis Zamperini is affiliated with the museum, I learned. He's that cool guy who has an airport named after him in west Torrance. (At that airport, I intend to get involved with helicopters very soon.) http://www.yelp.com/biz/zamperini-field-torrance Anyways, the lady told me some great stories about Mr. Zamperini ( an Old Torrance native who now lives in West Hollywood): Like the time Mr. Zamperini, a wartime pilot, was shot down and floated in the Pacific for more than 40 days. Crikey! I asked how he kept from starving. He and another survivor caught fish and ate them raw, and they drank rain water. After being rescued, he spent a couple years in a prison camp, yikes. His family was notified that he was dead during the time he was adrift at sea. A death certificate was issued, and Mr. Zamperini has recently donated his own death certificate to the Torrance Museum! Haha! Apparently they will soon get some other stuff from him as well. This is a perfect place to bring kids. Free street parking everywhere around the museum. And my first visit here certainly won't be my last.
