We were greeted immediately upon entering around 8pm on a Wednesday and though the shopping area around us was deserted, this place was absolutely bustling. Our party of 3 was offered a high top table at the bar as none of the regular tables were available. This suited us perfectly! We were offered English and German menus, which was nice as it's always great fun to attempt to figure out what's what. Our first waiter (perhaps the manager?) was full of personality and took great care to help us pronounce the names of some of the dishes. He also recommended our excellent appetizer! Another waitress took his place later in the meal, so I assume she was on break when we were seated. She also provided super friendly and polite service. I had the roasted goose, and it was simply divine. Beautifully rendered skin, not chewy, tons of flavor. This came with a heaping pile of vinegary red cabbage and kartoffelkloesse (soft potato dumpling, which I actually don't care for that much but these were okay). The fresh Pils on tap (Bitburger, of course) was clean and crisp, and the ambience was cozy and comfortable. Everyone was quite satisfied with their meals, though in classic German style the portions were enormous. The bill came out to about 100€ total for three diners, which felt about right to me. I was super happy with this place!

Driving, cycling or hiking between the highlights of this region in the north of the French Meuse…read moredepartment, you won't have any problem finding the village of Breux. You might have a small problem trying to find this pub though. But it's worth the search. Located between the monastery of Orval and the basilica of Avioth, The Oak Inn is a tiny country pub serving about a dozen of real English ales & bitters, some Belgian beers and local delices as Orval trappist ale, maitrank and local wine. It's quiet, there's a nice big terrace for long summer evenings and a wood stove with a crackling for long winter evenings. The building is pretty impressive; the pub is just a small part of what owners Mike & Paskie eventually want to convert into a pub/recording studio/music venue. The music studio is actually open, but not in its definite form yet. Mike will be happy to show you around and tell you all about it. Every good review mentions a few downsides as well... Hard to come up with any, but there you go: although there's probably not much demand for it (Breux has a population of just over 250), it would be nice if the pub would be open in the afternoons too. And a simple snack/meal would be ideal. Just some 'tartines' with Orval cheese, a quiche or a pizza... No, nothing more on the down side really. Here's a treasure map for you: at the church coming from Orval, take a left into the northern part of the Grande Rue. Coming from Avioth, go straight ahead at the church. Look for number 44 (right hand side), go around the building and there you are...

We started with this asparagus pudding with foam at the top and salmon on top of a piece of toast. Salmon was very fresh and was a great way to start our dinner. I ordered the 4 course meal for 56 euros and it included the following: 1. Foie gras with mushrooms - The foie gras melts in your mouth and mushrooms are so good! 2. Risotto langostines - The Langostine was so "meaty" and thick. The risotto is also soaked in yummy butter! 3. Breaded lamb with pan fried chicken liver - My first lamb that wasn't gamey and it cut very well with a knife and fork. Almost like steak! The pan fried chicken liver was also to die for. It was the crunchy layer and such a soft meat. 4. Soufflé with mirabelle sauce - It has the texture of flan with cotton candy on top. The mirabelle sauce was so good, I cleaned the plate! (Hides) As an American, I thought the portions were a bit small, but the food came out in perfect times to keep me from being so hungry. And now that dinner service is done, I am STUFFED! Dinner ended with a table dessert which was panacotta with apricot and peach jelly topping and a homemade marshmallow. The panacotta wasn't sweet, which I really appreciated, but the marshmallow makes up for it. The marshmallow was also super fluffy where my fork could bounce off of it! I would sooo come back here again and try their chef menu meal. We just didn't have a few hours to spare to wait for our meals. Service was so great too! Our wine glasses stated full and sparkling bottled water was always on the table.
