As we continue our visit to Montreal this week, we had our first sub-par experience. Friends who live in the area told us that L'Barouf was one of their favorite bars, with plenty of beer on tap, a good negroni, and free popcorn. Well, it may be a great place for locals, but not so much for tourists based on our experience. We walked in the front door on a rainy mid-afternoon and the place was fairly empty (as one might expect at that time of day) with only a single person at two separate tables and two more people sitting at the bar. My wife and I took seats at the bar as well and the bartender walked over to us, perfunctorily handed us a couple of drinks menus, and hovered over us until we made a selection. She apparently was in a hurry to get back to her conversation with the two local women at the other end of the bar. My wife ordered a glass of sauvignon ($8) and I ordered a Kilkenny cream ale ($9). The bartender returned with our drinks, placed them down in front of us without saying a word, and then went back to the other end of the bar. You could almost feel a shiver in the bar, our reception was so cold. It was if we were intruding on her life. Our interaction with the bartender aside, I do have to say that our friends were right; there is an impressive number of beers on tap here. I thoroughly enjoyed my Kilkenny cream ale, which was absolutely delicious, and I would have ordered another one if I could have gotten the bartender's attention. My wife, on the other hand, just wanted to finish her wine and for us to leave and find a friendlier bar to hang out in. (Which we eventually did. Stay tuned for that review.) I finally got the bartender's attention, signaled that I would like to pay, and she sort of sighed as if to say "okay let's get this over with so you can leave and I can go back to what I want to focus on instead of you..." First time here. It a one trick pony, drinks!! No food just drinks. Poor selection of nonalcoholic beer. One dusty citrus beer. Not their clientele. Their saving grace is that they're well situated. read more

The perfect bar hangout for Caesars, sports and popcorn. Free popcorn for patrons, might I add? Very Quebecois vibe and with a name like L'Barouf, no one should expect anything else. During World Cup festivities there was "le football" on the TV and plenty of fans watching intently. Not me, I was fascinated by the drink in front of me, with Clamato juice and a Montreal steak salt rim. Yes, a good old fashioned Caesar had my full attention. Beyond the obvious drinks and sports, there's ample seating at the bar and in the booths. Probably a good spot for tourists and locals alike to enjoy the simple things in life. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. read more

If you expect alcohol in your drinks, don't go here. Even when we politely mentioned the lack of it in our first round while ordering our second round, we still got none. One of us had to actually order a shot of Vodka to pour into her previously ordered Vodka Cran. read more

On a breezy day in Montreal, particularly if there's a big football match on, it's hard to imagine a better locale than L'Barouf. With an open facade, lots of beers on tap, free popcorn, and a few large TVs showing the Real Madrid game, it was a nice way to burn a couple hours on a Sunday in Quebec. The service was friendly and prompt despite only one person working the room, and on a sunny day, it wasn't too dark to the point of getting depressed you're inside a bar watching sports on a weekend instead of enjoying the great outdoors. If I were a local, there's no doubt this would be my go-to weekend sports bar. read more

Really enjoyed the beer selection here. needed to try a few of the french Canadian beers from the region. So I ordered the Griffin a light blonde beer. Next in line the blonde Trembley a light delicious beer, very refreshing. Bar Barouf offers many types of beers, and the service and prices are very reasonable. Thwe day we came here they had a pretty good happy hour. Two beers for the price of one. And they bring thme out seperately. So both beers are served cold in an iced glass. read more

Man, Barouf looks spiffy now. Back in the day when I used to work up the street at Valet d'Coeur and it was known as a frenchie (from France) hangout, we'd go in and have beers and it was no big thang but now they've totally renovated and the place looks like a ski lodge, with a massive polished wood décor and a huge-ass high ceiling. They loose a point because the waiter was kinda snippy when my friend didn't really know what she wanted but then they got a point when I got a very, very nice gin and a tonic. And in the end, my friend's white velvet was spot on and it made me regret my g&t but then who can regret a g&t so all was good in the world. Also: free pretzels. can't beat that. read more

Stopped in here for a drink for no other reason than it happened to be a decent looking bar on a Saturday night in the Plateau. Service is fine, the atmosphere is nice - almost patio-like, even thought you are indoors. I can see this being a good regular watering hole for locals. The do focus mostly on beer, but offer other items as well; just note that your choices of wine etc will be more limited. read more

The washrooms in the establishment emit an overwhelming odour the ruins the experience. Positively disgusting. You'd think they would try to remedy the situation but they do not. Apparently they are ok with stench and filth. Nice atmosphere otherwise. read more

Great location. We went there as a group of 10, which isn't often easy to serve, but the staff were on it and helped us open up space by moving tables and working with us to take over space as it became available. Very attentive service coupled with very strong drink pours, and they were more than capable of handling some of our crew who were sure they were ever so clever. Beware the pretzels by the stairs will run out early in the night, but while they're there, do be sure to help yourself to them for the benefit of the longevity of your drinking endeavours that night. read more

I don't know who the bartender was Wed night Sept 25th '19, but she yelled at me for daring to touch the bar tap, when I told her i only wanted to see the brand, (If she was that aware she should've made sure the customer could see it.) She yelled at me again. Pretty stern. So I got up to leave and she again yelled at me as I walked out the door. I've been in the service industry for 10+ yrs tone is everything. A simple "Please don't touch the taps just ask me." would've gone a long way. This bar clearly doesn't have what I'm looking for, Customer Service. So, L'Barouf will always be Le Barf to me. read more

Relaxing, chilled out, decent prices, great location, what more could you want? People watching for sure, lots of tables and booths, good ambience, a breather on st.dennis. Music on friday was awesome from a nostalgia perspective- 1940's to 1980's hits. I almost missed my parents. Different vibe all together. read more

Let me start off by saying I LOVE this bar. I live around the plateau and this has been my go-to place with friends for the past couple of years. This place is what a BAR is, great for get togethers with a couple of friends, have a couple of drinks etc. The biggest issue with this place is the RUDE staff, and they don't even try to hide it. Some of my friends that came to hang out were scolded by the waitress for not drinking because they were driving and I quote her: "What's the point of going to a bar if you're not gonna drink??". That's only the beginning, I've been yelled at on my birthday for having some of the people at my table only having glasses of water. "This is ridiculous" and not only did she yell at me when she served me the wrong beer, she refused to serve others water when I gave her a low tip for her horrible service, even going as far as mentioning what my tip was with them. So good to see Barouf re-opened. The layout is totally different but is still a great spot to stop on St.Denis for some drinks and people watch through the open air front. Our bartender (owner/manager??) was super nice and accommodating. Try a Bloody Caesar if you never have and like Bloody Mary's. read more

Back when this bar was being (re)built I would walk by and think "that's going to be one chill establishment", seeing all the natural wood going into the place. And several visits later, I can confirm my hypothesis: this is one chill place! L'Barouf is pretty much the perfect place for a relaxed 5a7 or a weekend afternoon beer. The combination of natural wood, lots of plants, the high ceiling coupled with cosy booths, and lots and lots of beers of tap just make it excellent. There's a nice balance of both local and imported beers, so there's something for just about any beer drinker. The self serve pretzles are a nice touch too. read more

Nice open plan, spacious bar, comfortable seating, a great place to bring a group for drinks, who will enjoy the large native brew selection. Never mind the name that brings to mind someone violently upchucking ( which is possible of course, but not likely as you'd be deathly embarrassed to do it in such a nice place.) read more

This has become my favorite bar for the 2 weeks I spent in Montreal. They have an eclectic choice of beer. Trust me. La Fin Du Monde tastes much better on tap. The bartender is very nice and engaging. The place also happens to be in a happening part of town. Plenty of good drinking and eating places nearby. Friday and Saturday nights are especially hopping. read more

Cool bar on St-Denis. Very relax and good for small groups. There is a grand piano in the middle but I don't recall seeing a band there. Music is rock, classic rock... no dance music. Had good times there. read more

My family and I were looking for a good spot for an evening drink. We were lucky enough to come across this pub. The bar tenders were charming and efficient. There is an excellent choice of different beers and some simple mixed drinks, but no cocktails. The music was superior! We hummed along to every song - mostly from the 60 and 70. Perfectly situated in the Plateau, this is a popular establishment for a good reason: great service and great drinks. It's lively but not too loud, the lighting is dim but perfect for a more loungy atmosphere, yet energized. Always something interesting happens whenever we go there.
