I was surprised La Bandera hadn't already been 'Yelped', though given how tucked away it is (down a side street opposite The Grill On The Alley), you'd probably have to be looking for it to find it. They've effectively let their food do the talking in lieu of lots of social media advertising. Stepping inside the 50 cover restaurant you're met with a vibrant red and yellow colour scheme which reminds you of the Spanish flag - La Bandera actually translates to 'the Flag' (I had to look that up!). There's also a separate bar area with seating. Our friendly waitress informed us that they'd brought in Spanish chef Josetxo Arrieta, who had previously worked in Michelin starred restaurants, to create traditional Iberian cuisine from locally-sourced ingredients. Their menu therefore changes on a daily basis, so the dishes we ate might not reappear again for some time. It was a welcome change not to be faced with a massively comprehensive tapas menu. We decided on six dishes to share between the two of us (with tomato bread and olives as appetisers). This proved more than enough to fill us up - though we caved and ended up ordering a dessert each as well! We were really impressed with the Papas Arrugadas con Mojo - salted potatoes with special sauces from Gran Canaria and Lagrimas de Pollo con "piperrada" - chicken strips in honey chilli sauce. We enjoyed every one of the dishes, but those two were our favourites in particular. Their take on tiramisu and crème brûlée worked well, presented in coffee cups (perhaps a playful nod to the current Twitter campaign @WeWantPlates?) with just enough to top off what was a thoroughly enjoyable meal. 2015 is seeing a resurgence in Spanish restaurants - with Ibérica now open and El Gato Negro coming soon; the reputation of Spanish food in Manchester is looking very good indeed.

It was Friday night do it was time to go out with my girl to drink, eat, and catch up with the chat so we decided to go to a place with wine and tapas. I got reservation and glad I did cause the place was pretty busy. It's a small place so make sure you get reservation especially if you want to eat between the hours of 6:30-9pm. There is a separate bar area so you can just come here for drinks and a nibble if you want a full dinner. The menu is pretty extensive and offers many different type of tapas. We got the grilled octopus, mushroom, and beef sliders. I wanted a couple of other tapas but they ran out. We also ordered squid ink rice, which was big enough for two people to share. The grilled octopus was ok. Pretty small, but had a nice grilled flavour and tender. It wasn't overcooked or under seasoned. However, I've had better elsewhere so I wasn't that impressed. The mushroom tapas contained a couple of different mushrooms and was sautéed in olive oil and seasoned with salt and peeper... Pretty simple dish and it was ok. If you like the taste of mushroom, you'll like this simple dish. The beef slider was awesome and I'd get this again. It had avocado mayonnaise and was well seasoned... You only get two unfortunately. The squid ink rice came in a nice white bowl and the rice was black as expected. The flavour is very delicate and I thought could have had more salt since it was a big bland, it had bits of squid and mostly rice. Would have been way better if it had larger pieces of squid cause it was really just rice in squid ink. It does turn your teeth a bit black so if you're on a date and you want to keep looking sexy, avoid this dish! The dessert menu wasn't spectacular so we didn't get any. The staff was friendly and was pretty attentive. Overall the place was ok...a bit pricey and nothing spectacular but a good place to have dinner with a friend to catch up or take a date to impress.

Came here a few months ago. There was a group of us - about 8 people - and we decided to other lots of different dishes and share it. Which is basically what tapas is all about :) Before visiting, I had heard that some of the United players had been here. I had recently seen photo of Mata and Herrera visiting the place. Good enough for Mata/Herrera, good enough for me! :) (In fact, the night we went United were playing and the owner was in one of the players private boxes). All the food was all pretty good. My favourite was the Spanish omelette. Mmmmm. During the meal, we were like the clumsy table and managed to break vase/glasses. They were quick to wipe up the liquid and replace the glasses - although I think maybe they were running out of glasses and the replacement ones didn't match! :)

¡Que bueno! Thoroughly enjoyed it. We ordered 3 starters and paellas. Oh before that we sat at the bar, as we arrived a bit early, and ordered a bottle of cava. Shame it was Castelblanc as it's not the best but enjoy it we did. Anyway it came with a bit of raspberry so what the heck. Starters were; croquettes of jamón, beef cheeks (heavenly), and deep fried squid. Lovely. We then ordered our arroz; lobster for my wife and mixed for me. We were told we'd need to wait (which is fine) so ordered another starter ( pulpo a la gallega). Lovely too. Our rice appeared at about the right time and it tasted wonderful. The rice was undercooked but forgivable due to the great taste and fab atmosphere. No pud as we were full. We had 3 bottles (yikes); a cava, an Albariño, and to finish a Verdejo. Handsome! Worth going back to!

They first brought a dish of some of the best olives I have ever had. We had s bottle of rosé sparkling wine to start, along with tomato toast and a board with 3 meats and 3 cheeses. The flavors were incredible. For shared plates, we ordered 3 off the special Galician menu. The white asparagus was wonderful, a little of the sea asparagus on top gave just enough salt for the creamy sauce and crumb crunch. The octopus was also incredible. The potatoes were perfectly cooked, with tender pieces of octopus on top, all swimming in butter and topped with paprika. Finally, the scallops were served in the shell, with a crunch, spicy, peppery topping. The service was awesome, with a special shout out to Claudia, she could not have treated us better. Thanks for the digestif! A definite recommendation.

The service was OK, the food offerings just not enticing at all (we ended up with Caesar salads as the main, and stopped to buy some food at a Sainsbury's local and take it back to our hotel room. I had a margarita that tasted good but the glass was 80% filled with the biggest block of ice that I have ever seen - for £14.50!!!! Advice - stick with beer or wine and don't even consider cocktails!!! The place is still attractive but the fact that it was virtually empty on a Friday evening at 7-8pm is maybe explained by all the foregoing??

The reservations system does surely need some work as despite being open, they don't appear to allow reservations between 15:00 and 17:30, forcing me to select between the two, they didn't seem busy so my late arrival, however, wasn't a problem. Upon arrival, I was disappointed to hear the 50% off food just included tapas, which excluded paella, the only other table sitting at the same time as me also didn't realise it excluded drinks and desserts. The staff did seem friendly and understanding regarding my allergies, sadly the potatas bravas and albiognas seemed to contain gluten, which are my favourite tapas dishes made gluten-free at nearby Lunya, I presume this was down to a shared fryer. I opted to order the tortilla (Spanish omelette with onion), lemon and thyme chicken and a chorizo dish. I would say without an offer on food, tapas does appear to be rather pricey, while the pricing is competitive most other Spanish restaurants in the area have promotional offers throughout the year, rather than just in January. I liked how they did this for me with gluten-free bread. They do have authentic Spanish vibes with rather nice decor and Spanish music playing including a changing specials board for food and wine. They do have upstairs seating on some form of balcony too, so if you do make a reservation I would say to specify you want an upstairs/downstairs table which might not be possible to change at busy times. The staff seemed friendly and attentive however they become annoying after I was asked for my name I booked with half a dozen times by the same two servers. Honestly asking once or twice to mark off my reservation and get my 50% off is fine but it just became far too much. My Chorizo dish was definitely my favourite, the chorizo was excellent quality and with a sauce from which I presume was tomato, red wine and onion just made it better and it was probably the best chorizo I've had, it was great quality and seasoned really well. This was served with gluten-free bread, instead of regular bread however I found it to be a little bland and tasteless, even with the sauce. I did find the lemon and thyme chicken to be a little chewy however with hard vegetables, however, it still had great lemon and thyme flavours and it still looked pretty good too. The tortilla unlike other tapas places including Lunya nearby was served hot and I like that, again I found it to have good flavours with the potato and onion and I did mostly enjoy it, but again it was a little dry. I would return to La Viña, although the only dish I would re-order would be the excellent chorizo, it still remains one of the better Spanish restaurants I've tried in Manchester offering great flavours and authenticity and they are doing well to justify it being a slightly more premium option. 3* - Confusing 50% off promotion making it difficult to claim and I would have also liked to see a wider selection of more common tapas made gluten-free especially something as simple as fried potatoes with tomato sauce and aioli.

It was early to be fair - 630pm on a Thursday. But when we left about 815pm it was busy - always good to see a restaurant busy - better atmosphere and of course means they are doing well. I had looked at the menu before visiting - of course - and had in mind what I wanted already. But the specials potentially could have changed things - but didn't. Canto have a 3 dishes for £15 deal which is for most of the things on the menu. The only things not really in the deal is the seafood dishes - although king prawns are. I went for the king prawns (with garlic and chilli) - delicious. Had lots of garlic, not too much chilli. (Having king prawns when I was in Vietnam has sort of ruined king prawns because they will never be as good as what I had in Vietnam!). They were will very good though. I also had the pork skewers which were OK and shared the Jamon croquettes and Catalan bread with someone. So had 2 x croquettes and couple pieces of the bread. Catalan bread was really good.

To me, it had the look and feel of a contemporary eatery in Spain. We were seated close to the specials board, so decided to order a couple of those dishes as well as what seemed like the majority of the standard menu (they recommend three per person and that proved to be spot on for us). Whereas pretty much all of the 18 small plates we ordered were absolutely delicious (we duplicated a couple of options) - the octopus salad, padron peppers, aubergine crisps, pork cheeks and ham croquettes were my highlights - some weren't that spectacular. The beef meatballs, Spanish omelette and lobster & prawn croquettes were a tad underwhelming unfortunately. The bottle of red we shared (Torre Solar at £18) was very nice indeed. You can order many of their varied wine selection by the glass. They'd be a solid five stars but for a small number of things - a lack of balsamic vinegar served with the bread, mainly disappointing desserts (I enjoyed my upside down cheesecake made with actual cheese, but others thought it was dreadful). Also the churros weren't doughy-delicious but brittle. Service was warm and friendly throughout but on a couple of occasions the server could have been a bit more sharp-eyed, especially when we were sat clearly waiting to pay. So, feast on the small plates and bypass the desserts here.
