Bello et Angeli's by far had the best tasting ones. What made them better than the others was the chestnut itself. They were good size, still firm enough and had a very good flavor. Added to that a subtle hint of sugar glaze and they were the perfect marron glace in all of Toulouse! In contrast, the others (I tried 5 different stores) had chestnuts that were too small, too mushy, falling apart easily, and not as flavorful, or had too much sugar. I will be back to get the marron glaces here at Bello & Angeli!

It is exactly what you think of when you envision a chocolate shop in France. Upon entering, you know this is a special place. You can smell chocolate in its various forms and see a bear as big as a medium sized dog had carved out of chocolate. There are lots of things to enjoy: macarons, truffles, and marrons glacés (chestnut candied in sugar syrup and glazed, a seasonal treat that everyone should try once). I am told that they also have amazing ice cream during the summer. The truffles are beautiful to look at and a joy to eat. The chocolate is very rich in flavor and some of which are exotic ingredients, like kalamansi. We bought a box of 42 truffles so that we could sample some more while at home. The location is great. It is right in the heart of Toulouse and we will visit again when we go to the movies. There is a seating area where you can sample sweets and have a cup of coffee or tea. The owner was very nice and helped me find just the right truffle to try. This place is worth a visit.

As is usually the case here in France, there was a wonderful assortment of the usual pastries and bread - baguettes, croissants, eclairs, etc. Hubby really enjoyed his eclair. However, what makes this a standout are the macarons. There have about a dozen different types. We bought chocolate, pistachio, raspberry, creme brûlée, and cassis. All were well-made - crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. My favorites are cassis (simultaneously tart and sweet) and the creme brûlée, which was filled with a yummy buttercream. I am thankful that this is not near my house. I would put on 10 pounds in a week scarfing these down. A must visit in Toulouse.

I visited this lovely shop while on a Taste of Toulouse tour. This shop is really amazing for…read moreseveral reasons. First, all chocolate is made on site, which is notable because the shop itself is not very large. The selection of chocolates and other sweets is quite astounding. There are chocolate covered fruits and nuts, truffles, pieces of chocolate that are akin to American style bark, and most importantly, their version of fudge. The owner of the shop visited the United States and fell in love with American fudge. It is unusual for find that here in France and there are several types to choose from. I had the original, which is like dulce de lèche ish caramel but it is not made with condensed milk. I also had the pain d'épices, spice bread, which is like gingerbread. Both are delicious but I had a special fondness for the pain d'épices. Admittedly, I began to cry after the firsT bite because it perfectly combined two desserts that my grandmother (herself a professional baker and candy maker) made for me as a child: penuche (if you are from New England, you will know what it is) and gingerbread (not a cookie but more like a loaf). It was a surprisingly and embarrassingly emotional experience. (Thankfully, no one noticed) I would definitely return. With tissue in tow.
