What a neat spot to come after a concert to have a late night snack. More like tacos Galore. And fabulous frozen margaritas. Service was fast and friendly and willing to help. The vibe was totally casual yet fun. It did remind me of some old school movies and nostalgia from growing up. I wish i could give it zero stars... worst experience I've had in a while. We were up to order and it took about 15 min for us to put our order in because they kept making to go orders and ignoring us. By the time it was our time order all the asada and birria was gone and they told it would be another 15 min wait..... with no apology or resolution so we left. Delicious, authentic street tacos that are made right in front of you!! I got the carnita tacos that were very juicy and flavorful. The mango margarita is also very fresh and taste just like a mango that's been picked off of a tree - highly recommend if ever at this restaurant. The entire staff speaks Spanish and very broken English so be mindful of that but they are all kind and have great customer service. Hands down the most chaotic kitchen arrangement I've seen at a taco place. Not in a good way at all. Waited 20+ minutes standing in line when we were only the third people in line. That's because they make the meal right in front of you. Normally that's fine and good, but taking 20+ minutes is truly insane and unacceptable in my opinion. Finally, after some serious test of our patience, we get to order. We find out they don't have enough asada to make our tacos, after we ordered already. They say it'll be 10 min. I about lost my mind. Then he tries too hard to convince me to try other meat, no thanks we both wanted asada tacos. So we ended up saying we will just leave. He said okay. Didn't GAF, could've been more caring and apologetic given that we waited ~25min just to leave empty handed. This place ain't it. Chaotic kitchen, understaffed, slow. If there's a line AT ALL, expect to be there for quite a while. I certainly won't be coming back. read more

I discovered La Calle on Franklin while the app was trained on Downtown Houston, and I mentally made plans to check it out whenever I'm in the H for something. Said something was the Texans Draft Watch Party at Avenida Plaza yesterday I decided to hit the eatery up afterwards. I'm happy to report that my dining plans went accordingly For my first meal here, I had the five-street taco plate, choosing cerviche to occupy the soft shells. Damas y caballeros (ladies and gentlemen), los tacos son muy delicioso. The staff wasn't stingy with the shrimp, which I occasionally ate with a fork. Accompanying the tacos were a complementary soup that was very spicy but tasty nonetheless. I normally finish my meals when I dine out, but I couldn't finish the soup from all the spiciness. Plus, I was nearly full from the tacos. La Calle occupies one of the older buildings inside Downtown. It's just mere steps from the METRORail. Adjacent to it is a bar that's accessible to customers. At night, it has a marquee-like sign that brightly lights up. Oh, I forgot to mention that the tacos are close to authentic. I've been here plenty of times and I'm afraid my experience here has fallen slightly with every visit. I respectfully do not consider this an authentic kitchen. The pastor I feel is overly dominated with a sweet flavor, which I presume is from pineapple. While I understand this may be a creative choice, it is not the flavor I expect when ordering pastor. The asada is also bland, un-tender, and dry. The side dish frijoles were also without flavor and no better than your run of the mill Tex-Mex refried beans. The chia seed limonada however was impressive. I appreciate the niche of tacos in downtown that La Calle fulfills, and I would bring someone here if they had never been or have little experience with authentic Mexican cuisine. It is definitely a premier lunch spot. However I would not come here alone or with more experienced eaters. The service was also not very welcoming whenever I attended on a fairly early Friday night. The Birra tacos were just as good. Everything is made fresh to order and is simply top-notch. I will go back here all the time when I'm craving beef for tacos. I declined the choice of free side (Frijoles, Birria Sauce, etc). I did add an Elote cup; and a large frozen Lime Margarita. The margarita was standard frozen mix, served on a 16 oz styrofoam cup. The Elote cup was too soupy and too spicy. Definitely have had better. My tacos were very good. The flour tortillas were fresh, as was the Shrimp Ceviche filling. Birria Street Tacos (qty 5 corn tortillas) looked really good. The service was quick and friendly. I didn't love it. (Sorry!) If my friends were coming here again, I'd join them. In the world of fast casual building your own bowl, La Calle takes it to another level. After ordering your street tacos, your corn or flour tortillas are filled with your protein of choice and wrapped. Your other elements (onion, cilantro & lime) are wrapped separately. After paying for your order, you can visit the salsa bar. This truly opens the door for complete customization. Like extra onions, build your tacos with extra onions. Prefer just a sprinkle of cilantro, no problem. Ranking the street tacos, I suggest Chicken over Asado. Although the seasoning on the Asado tacos was perfect with my salsa of choice, the meat was full of gristle. I love that I can get these street tacos at around $5 for 2, but I did fill like a few elements we're sacrificed. Even so, they always fit the bill for a post event downtown snack! read more

I took a (super!) late lunch and was able to take advantage of their M-4 3pm - 7pm food deals that include 50% off 5 crisp tortillas. The meat was flavorful, though fatty, but each bite was packed with punches of delightful flavors. When dipped in the birria sauce, it took it to the next level. I was happy that the huge horchata ($5) included refills - it was a the perfect cool I needed after taking bites of the tortillas with spicy jalapenos. The service was quick and courteous; the establishment was also very spacious, super cold (a would-be nice respite from warm midsummer days) and clean, including the salad and toppings bar.
