La Cantina was so good. We went on a Monday, when not many restaurants are open, so it was a great find. The place was completely empty during our visit, which meant the service was all for us. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive, always refilling our water asking if we wanted anything else to drink etc. The food was delicious honestly, nothing bad to say. Prices can be a bit on the higher side if you don't go during happy hour (we didn't), but everything was very filling and worth it. I would definitely go back, especially for happy hour. Delicious tacos with a lot of variety located right next to peel metro. We got the shrimp ceviche, the al pastor tacos, the cactus tacos, the deep fried tacos with chicken and the chocolate churros. My personal fave is definitely the cactus tacos. It was crunchy, juicy and very flavorful. The al pastor and deep fried tacos were good, but the meat were a bit dry. The waitress warned us that the shrimp ceviche would be very spicy, but it actually wasn't bad. There were only a few slices of spicy red pepper in it. As long as you don't bite into it, it's not really spicy. The churros were warm and soft. The place isn't big but it's nice and cozy. The waitress was nice and patient with us. The location is great. Overall I think La Cantina is great for the downtown weekday lunch crowd or a 5@7. Their entrees are very good but there are better tacos and service elsewhere in MTL. Atmosphere is very nice and their menu is pretty interesting. I like that in addition to tacos they have several entrees and soups to choose from. They also have an extensive wine, beer and cocktail list. We ordered their shrimp ceviche, which was really good and spicy. My favorite entree was their traditional Aztec soup, it was absolutely delicious. Don't skip it, it's just $6 and a nice way to start the meal. We went for the Al pastor and fried tempura tacos, both were good but there are better tacos in Montreal. Their churros are very good though! They were hot and fresh and were served dipped in a dulce de leche sauce. Just a note about the service. It was VERY slow, we had to flag the waitress for drinks, to order our meal and then to order dessert and the bill. Also the only time the waitress actually came to our table was to ask me if I wanted a second Marguerita (since happy hour special was second drink half off). The waitress asked me twice and I said no both times. Then she brought me a Marguerita even though I had said no!? So there is a great deal of hype around this restaurant, lots of reviews and lots of high star ones at that. So we thought we would try it! Ok, so off the cuff the food is Ok, it's not exceptional nor is it bad. It's ok. What killed us was that everything was Ok. The expensive margaritas were ok, when you order the margarita do not have the Don Julio tequila as the base, because for $20 / for a glass of margarita that is half filled with ice is a total rip-off! For that matter so are their $14 margaritas, which also have ice filled to more than 50% of the glass. You can't mix and match tacos, so you get 3 tacos but they were all the same, so if you want to try a variety, that is not happening. This restaurant for the price is expensive, I don't know why some sites list it as $$ restaurant when it's clearly $$$ or even $$$$ if you want to have a few cocktails. Overall, I think there are far better value for money restaurants, but if you want a Mexican experience downtown Montreal and don't care about the costs, the location is easy and convenient and the service is excellent. read more

If I could give them less then 1 star I would. Thought we found a hidden gem. Not even close. The first red flag should of been when people who were waiting for their food walking out just having water. The second red flag should of been when a family came to dine they did receive their food but never received their drinks. So I try to give food establishments the benefit of the doubt . They got really good reviews from other patrons. After being there for an hour what I should of done is walked out with just having water like the other people. This was not an isolated incident. Because as we waited for our food people were disappointed on how long they had to wait for the overall experience. My mistake. When I finally received my order it was incomplete and it got cold. The food was fine with very limited choices ( Basically soft tacos or "deep fried " tacos which were basically taquitos. The problem was the clueless servers. We were told that we could have a table as long as we finished by 8. That's fine. When our food came, my brother's meal was missing. The waiter didn't seem to worry about it. He ran around taking orders at other tables. My brother's food didn't arrive until we had all finished. Of course we shared with him off of our plates.
