First off , I've always thought of mofongo as Puerto Rican, but this turned out to be a Dominican restaurant. I ordered their cocktail de camarones assuming it would be like the "cocktail" done in several other Latin American and Mexican restaurants with tomato sauce, ketchup, pico de gallo, and sometimes avocado. Here, it was an American shrimp cocktail -- 6 plain cooked shrimp with a cocktail sauce on the side. It was just okay. I also had a chicken empanada. This was very good. Served hot, I liked both the dough and the filling. My husband had a croquetas appetizer. It said 6 on the menu, but there were seven fried ones on the plate. These seemed prefab/institutional. He didn't care for the sauce that came with them. He wound up using my empanada sauce. He also got a side of sweet plantains. These were good. They didn't have a separate lunch menu or any specials that were reasonably priced. The menu is fairly expensive. Our friends from Homestead drove up to visit us back on May 27th. With their 3 hungry kids in tow, Santos and Melissa passionately suggested we should try authentic Dominican food for dinner. That we (mom and myself) will love it! Within a few minutes he blurted out "have you tried Mofongo", to which I replied jokingly, "what did you just call me". And after a worthy drive under 20 mins (from Haverhill area with traffic), we ended up at this small restaurant in a small shopping plaza, on South Dixie Hwy in South West Palm Beach. Once again, reservations are not necessary. I do not think Casa Del Mofongo has a slow time, and is open all seven days. The restaurant has a general, uninformative website, found on google lookup for the restaurant. On Google a 4.8 rating with an astounding, 2700 reviews. However on Yelp, 4.5 rating, a mere 193 reviews. With this being, when visiting, please expect to wait in the narrow and tight entrance space at least 15 minutes or more. While waiting and maneuvering (as other patrons walk in), we noticed and admired the pleasing, rustic decor and the plaque on the wall, highlighting the restaurant being voted as Best Dominican Restaurant for 2022, Palm Beach County. The restaurant's popularity is way bigger than the physical limits of the dinning and waiting area. From what I have read Mofongo is a traditional Puerto Rican dish with fried mashed green plantains, garlic, olive oil, with bacon or pork cracklings. Served in an oval shape, with meat, seafood and broth. And somewhere along the way, became extremely popular that now it is a Dominican standard. Yes, the significant wait allowed us to admiringly peruse the menu and Santos advised us on what to order. Thankfully with Santos being there, he was able to communicate in Spanish with the 4 female wait staff. I believe only one of them conversed in English. Despite the continuous dinner crowd, the female staff remained upbeat, attentive, friendly, and polite. After a few peeks to the back of the restaurant, I noticed a compact yet bustling kitchen, where this desirable, delicious, traditional food is rustled up. What is impressive to me about the food is manner in which each dish is plated. Santos's choice, the Mofongo con Camarones (Mofongo with Shrimp) was plated to us on slender, small, boat shaped, dull metal dish, atop a wooden, rectangular board. Look at the photo below and agree with me that looks beautifully delicious. As it was not my plate, I had a bite and absolutely no words to express how fabulous the taste was. My Mofongo con Pollo was neatly and plainly plated on a rectangular dull metal dish, equally packing a devastating, delicious punch. My mom ordered the Salmon a la Plancha. The fish is cooked on a hot, flat metal plate, or plancha, which combines high-heat searing with a bit of smoking. The fish is seasoned with herbs and citrus and rubbed with olive oil. Once again, a sizeable portion, some of which we had to take home. Melissa had the Pargo Frito, pictured below. This is Spanish for whole deep fried Snapper, cleaned, seasoned (with herbs) and served in a similar tray adorned by a leaf and lime. And as excellent as the above dishes were, this spot serves a cool, refreshing Limonada and Sangria that pairs well. At the end, to leave Casa del Mofongo is an endeavor. The food is fantastic that you definitely desire to order more as takeout. Yet the food is filling to point that you do not wish to eat anything else for the day or the next day. The appetizer and entree value is worth the portion. The entrees range from $18 to $26. When you visit, come here starving and make sure you all can wait standing up for over 15 minutes. I was visiting my besties in WPB and I knew about this joint because one of my besties goes there periodically and loves it so I had high expectations. Bandeja Casa del Mofongo: my boy got this as a main because if you see the pic I posted you'd tell how generous they are with portions, 4 people could easily share this. Tostones, pork belly, sausage, fried cheese and pork chunks. Everything was flavorful and although it was all fried, it wasn't soaked or drenched in grease. Tiramisu: now this thing comes served in a moka pot utilized a lot by Latin people so we were just impressed with presentation. Although we could barely tasted the coffee, instead of lady fingers they use a cake that's to die for. It was so good I had to order a second one, something about that "possibly" vanilla cake that was so moist and fluffy. All I'm saying is, you gotta have this dessert. Coffee: they brought us this whole thing to make the coffee from scratch and let me tell you that presentation wise I was super impressed. My boy prepared the whole thing and final result was "chefs kiss" for this coffee was the perfect ending to a great lunch. All my friends enjoyed their mofongo dishes, the dessert, the coffee and all agreed on the excellent service so we are coming back for sure. Its so small inside that we waited outside but it really wasn't that bad. The food was so so good! I had leftovers and ate it the next day, and I think it was even better the next day to be honest. For our appetizer we had the tostones reallenos Con camarón al ajillo. Absolutely amazing and tasty. Had 6 individual tostones with shrimp and sauce for $12. The sauce was absolutely amazing. Just give me a bucket of that sauce and I'll dump it over everything I eat. If they sold it by the gallon I'd by 10. Then, the piece de resistance was La chapiadora. Easily enough food for two people to enjoy. It's a mofongo with chicharones mixed in with a piece of steak wrapped around it, shrimp, more Chicharones, and Dominican sausages covered in the sauce I mentioned above. Every bite was delicious and even though I was full I wanted more because it was that good. The servers were very nice and the food came out quick. Not the same owner at all hehehe It was empty when we came in but started to fill up shortly after. By the time we were done eating all tables were taken and mostly Dominicans so you know it's a good restaurant Hubby had the Shrimp Mofongo and I had the Mofongo with Smoke Pork Chops. Both were amazing! Personally it's the best Mofongo I've ever had! It was soft, not super hard like most, where my jaws get tired of chewing after a few bites lol The Garlic Sauce was so good and gives the Mofongo such added flavor, not that it was needed, I just like garlic. Even when reheated in the microwave the next day it was still soft. Shrimp was delicious and Smoked Pork Chop was so good! If you never had Dominican food this is the place to try it!
