My girlfriend and I are traveling from Nevada and randomly picked this amazing place out. From the outside, it's a smaller building but inside is converted into an amazing business with authenticity. I will start with the host and server we had. Both ladies were excellent, fun and very very welcoming. Nicest people we have met thus far driving from Nevada. Always smiling, not hanging over you while you eat, and extremely polite. The food was absolutely incredible. Over a week traveling with numerous stops, La Casita De Cortez absolutely comes out on top easily. Homemade food with passion behind it and generous portions. Nothing fabulous to inform anyone about. They are VERY expensive for Mexican food inside a rather run down residential house. The good things were the marinated fajita meat and fresh corn tortillas. Unfortunately the onions and peppers were charred and burnt black which meant the meat was way overcooked The outdoor dining area was nice but it was too cold for our parents so we sat inside. They didn't offer green chile salsa which is what our mom really wanted. Our server Elizabeth was very nice and seemed too busy but was kind to fulfill our repeated requests. Their portions of sour cream and side dishes to accompany the fajitas were skimpy. We had to always ask for more fearing additional charge after charge, but happily that didn't happen. After spending the day driving and hiking at the national park, La Casita de Cortez was just what we needed to decompress from a long day. Delicious food, strong drinks, and good company. They start the table with the typical chips and salsa, and the salsa was delish. Ended up getting a little extra to put on my meal because it was so good. Prices were reasonable, and food was on the larger end. Carne asada plate was well-cooked, and their seafood salad came with a surprising amount of seafood. Definitely didn't have any leftovers with either of these meals. Good drinks. Enjoyed my cadillac margarita, and as I said, it was on the stronger end. Their micheladas were HUGE. Parking was super easy - they had a lot right on the side. Service was great, and everyone was super kind. This meal was exactly what we needed after a long day. We ordered the mesa verde burrito with side of rice and beans and the tortilla soup. Our food was incredibly delicious. Definitely recommend both. I'll say though, the soup comes in a bowl the size of your head so be prepared. I felt like I was eating for days but the bowl still looked full when I called it quits. This was our favorite place to go in Cortez. This past year something changed. The food used to be fresh and homemade. Now it tastes like it is out of a freezer. Soggy and stale. We tried it twice, thinking they just had a bad night, but no. The prices have also nearly doubled, and we were told as we were checking out that there would be an extra 3.75% charge for using a credit card. We won't go again. Both my husband and I ordered a Chimi. What we got were burritos not Chimii's. The meat in both of these were so tough that I had trouble chewing it and actually had to spit one piece out because I couldn't chew it. Told the waiter and he did nothing. My husbands Chimi was also not a Chimi and his meat was so dry and tough that I had to give him some sauce from mine. Then we paid with a credit card and they charged us an additional 2% for using a credit card. When you call in your order and are greeted with the friendliest individual, you know it's going to be a great meal. We had just left Mesa Verde and were desperate for food. We found La Casita De Cortez on Yelp and upon reviewing the menu it was going to be our dinner. Both my dad and I were unsure of what we wanted and provided the waitress with the options we were interested in. The waitress nailed it perfectly! My dad ordered a Steak Burrito and I ordered the Chile Verde. Wow! The steak was delicious and full of flavor and the pork was so tender you knew it had been cooking for the perfect amount of time. The Chile Verde also had the perfect amount of food where I was able to finish my meal and feel full but not stuffed. The rice and beans were perfect and just what you'd expect from a Mexican restaurant. My dad, who doesn't like beans, practically finished his entire serving. This is a must stop when in Cortez. We gave our card to the server, who came back after a few minutes saying there was an issue with their WiFi preventing them from running our card. She came by our table and said "just 5 minutes" which turned into 30 minutes. I sat there, but the waitress only said, "five more minutes" and kept our card. After we had waited for 30 minutes just to pay, she came over and asked for a different card. We gave a different card and were finally able to leave. We were headed to a chain Mexican restaurant that was mentioned to us as being definitely open when we saw la casita was actually open(Google said it was closed). Our waitress was a little late in serving us our water and menu but their salsa that came with Chips was good. For drinks we had the Durango Margarita and it was a good one. When I asked about their best enchilada, server mentioned the carne asada one so I went with that and my husband had the carne asada fajita. My son had the Al Pastor tacos. Our entrees were served after a few minutes and the carne asada was especially good. Well caramelized and tasty morsels of meat. The al pastor taco was just okay. Even though the food was good, the service wasn't very friendly - maybe it was the pressure of holiday weekend or just a long day. We stopped here on our way to Moab and we're very impressed. It looks like a small place on the outside but the ambiance is so warm and welcoming once you enter. The patio is where we sat and loved the style and the adorable kids patio table! Our server was attentive and all of our food/drinks came out quickly.
