Classy alternative to the Irish bars in Turtle Bay. After having walked by a few times, the girlfriend and I decided to go in one day after work. What we found was a delightful little wine bar that is free of pretense and a calm, civilized place to have a drink. Our bartendar was an easygoing guy who was welcoming and helpful. The wine list is composed mostly of familiar and accessible grapes with the occasional random varietal. We had one of the happy hour specials, which was a pretty decent sangiovese. This place is very good! The wine selection isn't EXACTLY what it says on the list so don't go by what it says on the menu. This I can forgive because I know it's hard to keep up. Besides, the selections were mostly pretty good stuff. ALways ask what they have that isn't listed because they might have some REALLY good stuff. For instance, they had Franciscan Cab by the glass but I had to ask what else they had that wasn't on the list. In this situation I would much rather have asked than have the guy try to sell me on it. He knew I knew my stuff and let me make my choice. The cheese plate was okay. Two out of three of them were good, extraordinarily thin and the last was about the most generic goat cheese there is, so generic I didn't realize it had a name even. It was the type of goat cheese they give you at two-bit diners. There are great artisanal goat cheeses available from purveyors all over the city- they could've done better than that. Service was excellent although I didn't really get to test their knowledge. They were extremely personable. Things that could improve: Some more adventurous and more crafted wines as opposed to regions recognizable by amateurs (if it's good people will drink it no matter where it's from) and the cheese plate (obviously). Strong points: Pretty much everything else. Really beautiful stained wood interior with nice leather seats, very personable staff. I'll be back. Definitely the best place of its kind in the area. If you want a fantastic lunch... we had the salmon that was cooked to perfection. Lightly crisp on top and fluffy in middle. Baby veggies of carrot and purple potatoes with an amazing sauce. This is a nice little place to drop in and get a glass of wine +/- a cheese plate before moving on with the rest of your day/evening. The place is small, but has a decent amount of seating. In the winter, it's warm and cozy. In the summer, they open up the windows so you get to enjoy the warm weather. They have a decent selection of wines. The cheese plate is OK - the selections of cheeses are okay but the servings are small. I had a magical weeknight evening by myself here during a work trip to NYC. The Prosecco was on special. They were playing the perfect blend of music (Depeche Mode to David Gray to the Cure to Annie Lennox). I felt comfortable sitting at the bar by myself; in fact, everyone else was towards the front or outside so it was pretty calm and quiet inside. last friday I went for happy hour and a tall server named Mia or Maya (I lost my bill) served me. I use to go every friday for happy hour and she all the time tries to give me something I don't order. The reason I am leaving a bad review is for those who never been at La Cava be aware what are you ordering cause next thing you know you will pay twice instead of happy hour. Beers are $5 but you will end up paying $8 if you don't mention HH (Weird) and in top of it, if you don't tip "Enough", you might get kicked out... p.s. went back same day with my friends and I didn't want to tell them the drama I had early that day and instead the same server said we are close while it was 1am while on the website it says they close at 3:30am. I came here on a Friday night with a group of friends. We were getting ready to leave when we got there since there didn't seem like enough space for us, but the manager told us that the table near us was about to leave and to hold tight. Surely enough, they left and we were able to order our food. We ordered multiple Prosciutto with Melon, Steak Tartare, and the Cava Plate, all of which was amazing. Saw the reviews before meeting up on a date with someone here for some drinks and food, was excited with the 4 star rating...but to say the least I was a little underwhelmed. Service was ok, had to flag people down a few times as our drinks were empty and needed more. Drinks though were decent and our server did come over to make sure everything was ok when she saw I wasn't drinking my martini.. it didn't taste the same as before (different vodka) so they insisted to get me another one to my liking.. really appreciated that. Food was nothing special.. had shrimp cocktail and the mozz, tomato and basil. Shrimp tasty a little fishy, i think they were still a little frozen, and the mozz was OK but I've had better, plus they didn't use basil leaves... it was like some shredded basil that looked like strips of seaweed almost. This was a unexpected gem of a place to meet for a nice glass of wine before seeing a theatre performance with a friend. I arrived early and my friend was running late, so I took a seat at the bar. The bartender came over immediately and gave me a good recommendation for a glass of wine. The wine list was not as extensive as I expected, but the rose on the happy hour menu was wonderful (not sweet thank god!) and certainly a great deal for $7. When I realized that my friend might miss the happy hour special, I told the bartender I wanted to order a drink for her, but he said not to worry that he'd keep the happy hour price no matter when she showed up - which was a nice, unexpected gesture. I often feel like I should be embarrassed for wanting a decent price on my wine, but this guy was totally cool (especially for the neighborhood). There was a quaint feel in the place, with baguettes at the end of the bar alongside butcher-style ham hanging from the kitchen area. It could have felt kitschy, but with the dark wood bar and hightop tables, it created a nice effect. Also, the music (jazz/blues) created a good atmosphere that allowed you to talk with your friends....or a cute neighbor while still having some light noise in the background. We ordered salads which were good, not amazing, but again for the neighborhood I felt like it was a great deal and wonderful service. I would definitely recommend La Cava if you want a glass of wine and some cheese, or a light meal. Random aside: There was a mistake in the way the check was divided, the bartender fixed it quickly and apologized for the inconvenience. I really want a great, authentic little tapas place in the neighborhood. Cava is kind of that - small plates and all, but doesn't quite fit what I'd really like. They are trying to appeal to a little more upscale crowd than the pubs down the street which attract all the twentysomething sloshes. This is definitely good for the area. The food is good, as others note. Keep it simple, though. Get some cheese and some drinks. But if you've been to Spain and are really looking for that feel and those tastes that you experienced there, this will be ok, but won't quite hit the mark. Overall, I really enjoy going to La Cava. I've been here several times, with a small group of friends or just on a date but there are a few things to note when coming here. Its a very loud place and gets packed pretty fast. The main downside to this is that they have long tables which sometimes fit 4-6 people, but if you are on a nice little romantic date, sitting just the two of you, they sometimes jam someone else in the seats literally at your table so you pretty much on a family-style date, which kind of sucks. But if you have a nice space at the bar, its pretty good. Overall service is fast and friendly. Although they have a small selection of wines by the glass, its pretty good if you just want a casual glass here and there. They also have some very good girly cocktails! We've had their cheese and meat platters, which are good. Olives are a bit cold and not seasoned like at other restaurants but what can you expect for a $5 olive plate. read more

After a quick local yelp search for highest rated, lowest prices near my hotel, I pulled up/called La Cava and asked "Can you take 10 people right now (7pm, Sunday)?" The answer was yes, and thus began an amazingly fun girls night where I ended up having to boot them from my hotel room at 11:59pm so we could all get to work the next day. Most notable, was the spectacular happy hour that runs from 4-9 with many choices (I drank rose), followed by the pate appetizer, which was delicious. I think all ten of us had something wonderful for our main and they even swapped my coworkers salad when she didn't realize she has ordered salmon tartar (being raw/rare). I coincidentally ordered the same dish, but was way down on the other side of the table and I loved my nicoise salad. Our French visitor had a blast, also, and we will all be back again! read more

The area has developed to serve the wine slinging millennial set and yet LaCava towers above the competition. The difference is in the details. The crowd is after work type not very diverse but not in a horrible way. Space is small but the staff is extra friendly and accommodating. In fact, they made a space for my cousin and I near the kitchen by the bar since the bar was crowded with HH peeps. The Lychee Martini and Chocolate Blueberry Martini were also amazing.
