It was one of those "buy the ticket then figure out when you're going" situations (if anyone else does that...). Luckily, this wound up being a great decision. The Relais is the quintessentially charming Italian getaway we were hoping for. The staff is exceptionally friendly (and for the most part speaks nearly perfect English - a major plus when your Italian is as cringe-worthy as mine). They really were fantastic. Be forewarned, the resort itself is about 35-40 minute drive from the actual city of Perugia. There is basically nothing on-site except their passable restaurant and a small spa. It's perfect for people who really want to unwind, but not ideal as a home-base for touring the area. (One half-star off for this.) The restaurant on-site is OK, but honestly was one of our least favorite meals in Italy. (Another half-star off for this.) We wound up going down the street several times to a small place called La Locanda del Colle; you will absolutely need a reservation because it's tiny and DELICIOUS. My recommendations if you pass through and decide to stay in the area: brace yourself for the most unbelievable views, morning and night. It's truly breathtaking! Also, if you are looking for a wine tour, we really liked Gusto Wine Tours. They are local and regularly pick folks up from the Relais. (No Yelp page so just shouting out here!)

The hotel was a joy to stay in - friendly staff, great food, and the best hotel views from our 26 days in Italy. We stayed three nights. Dinners were a treat each evening, outstanding food. The dining room is divided into tour/non-tour areas, and sound-insulating between each; my wife and I appreciated being able to enjoy quiet dinners apart from the raucous tours. Breakfasts were also excellent. Walking through Assisi is like going back in time, an amazing experience. One of the more picturesque places we visited in Italy. But be aware there is some steep up and down involved, and the narrow streets can make for a harrowing experience avoiding cars zooming past. We also visited Basilica Santa Maria, which is down in Assisi proper, which we took a taxi to. We took taxis to/from the train station as well. Assisi does not have an abundance of taxis, and a 20-30 minute wait for a cab was common; plan this into your itinerary if you go this route. Hotel Giotto is highly recommended.

It was hot in July and we wanted air conditioning for the night, the temperature never got below 25.6 degrees Celsius in the room and usually well over 26. They told me that it was too hot out to cool the rooms! (Strike 1 - they lied, their air conditioning just does not work, saw multiple other rooms with windows open or people outside their rooms) Couldn't really open the windows at night either because there are no screens on the windows so the mosquitos would have been bad. Cool off or get stung by mosquitos, not much of a choice. The second strike is the shower. We are used to small European showers, but this was a whole new level of small. Literally had to open the door to the shower to clean my whole body. And of course it leaked all over the bathroom floor. Strike three was that the refrigerator would not work. So much for a cool drink. This was less of an issue, but just added up on top of the other 2. Not that the rest of the room was anything special. Plenty of room, but it actually felt like it was missing furniture. The simple way to describe it is very very basic furniture and accommodations. So after going to the front desk to ask them to fix the air conditioning and getting the silly lie from them, we decided that it was bad enough and uncomfortable enough that we would NOT stay a second night like we had booked. Then came the "final nail in the coffin". First they said they could not give us a refund for the 2nd night because we booked through a 3rd party (another lie). Having experienced this before, I said I would contact the 3rd party and have them contact them. I then proceeded to contact them, they then contacted the hotel and asked them if they would give us a refund for the second night. Guess what their answer was? NO!! They never had any intention of granting a refund for the second night that we did not stay. Dishonorable businessmen as well. I understand that I booked a non-refundable reservation, but with that should come with them providing what they described on their website which they did not (no AC, no refrigerator). So really should have refunded us both nights, but at least the second night. So be forewarned, they are not nice accommodations and they are NOT nice people!

For context we are a family from San Diego, California that regularly goes to Michelin level restaurants. So, that said a 1/5 stars review is not to say anything was terrible at Il Falconiere but I am holding it to the standard we know for Michelin starred establishments. The service was uneven at best. One guest in our party politely declined the welcome champagne as she does not drink alcohol and the waiter appeared downright offended. The Michelin standard in this situation would be to offer the non-alcoholic sparkling option as a substitute in my opinion which was not done, though she did later discover it on the menu and order a glass for herself. Our waiter also corrected one of the guests that "noodles are Chinese" when she was clarifying an order for one of the children at our table trying to order them pasta with cheese. Perhaps saying noodles is impolite in Tuscany but Michelin level service should not be rudely correcting guests like this. The food was fine but again for a one Michelin star restaurant the attention to detail just was not at that level. All four adults did the tour of Tuscany 6 course tasting menu while the children had pasta and chicken. Temperatures and textures were off and to be honest I can do better job at home with duck breast which was tough and gamey. Credit where it is due the pasta course was incredible and a standout. Lastly in terms of value this just does not stand up to other nearby restaurants in Cortona where we have regularly been impressed by the value and quality of meals. Just last night we had a meal for 9 (6 adults and 3 children) with multiple courses (appetizers, pasta, meat, dessert) and a bottle of wine for 350 euros out the door. Here lunch was 950 euros for 4 tasting menus and 3 children and a half bottle of champagne. Obscene prices for the quality compared to nearby Cortona restaurants. I had another dinner reservation here for later this week which immediately canceled after lunch. I cannot imagine spending more money here.
