People come in with lofty expectations of being blown away by the pizza, and while most if the pizza we tried was well above average, nerveless a gap existed to my expectations. The staff were great given the massive number of people that make pilgrimage to this place and the months in advance needed to get a booking during prime season. The Capriccisita pizza as described in my attached photo was mind blowing which overpowered the other pizzas we ordered. Friendly efficient staff. Figuring out the registration of your reservation prior to entry was a little tricky and chaotic but it eventually worked out fine. Tonight though, in my opinion the crust was not best in class. I found it to be excessively doughy around the edges and soggy in the bottom. Without a great crust as a base any great pizza is doomed to underperform. I will try the world nbr 2 ranked pizza place in the world, Una Pizza Neopolitana,, also owned by the same group, when I'm back in New York to see how their crust performs. Regardless, it was a worthwhile visit.

First night I had the Diavolo pizza spicy, crispy, perfectly balanced. Second night I tried the Cacio e Pepe pizza, which was rich and cheesy in the best way possible. Both were phenomenal. The vibe is awesome too. Inside feels almost like a big beer hall with tons of energy, while outside has more of a casual café feel. Even at 2-3 in the morning, the staff was super attentive and chill. We even had a bottle of wine with our pizzas one night, which made for the perfect nightcap. This second story gem is down at sea level in the port of Pozzuoli, and I have eaten there about twenty times. Be advised: the menu is very, very limited. You can get a starter of octopus or a plate of olives. There are a couple of seafood pastas and risotto pescatore. Then you can get some fish or some fried calamari or shrimp. That's about it. But the guys who run the place are great, and I love to watch them interact with foreigners --- by which I mean anyone who lives more than ten miles away!! I first ate here in about 1986, and the young guy that was our waiter then was our waiter in April of this year, and one of the old cooks was still down in the kitchen. Don Antonio and his wife are long gone, but his son is still there every night it is open. I highly recommend this place for an adventurous eater, but don't go there and waste a table if you are wanting some sort of special fancy meal. This is where small groups of old friends go for good food in a simple setting.
