Which was a good thing, since they had to turn away several guests that night. Our English Bulldog was welcome here as well, which was very nice of them. The menu in this Michelin restaurant is compact, but has something for every taste. It's modern french cuisine I'd say. We ordered a glass of local Riesling with our starters. There was a complementary Amuse-Bouche. A kind of cream-puff, but savoury with a creamy, cheesy filling. A really tasty appetizer. For starters we chose the Galantine duck and foie gras and trout carpaccio. Both fantastic choices. Wonderful duck and foie gras (mi-cuit), matched the Riesling perfectly. And the trout (pink/orange) was better quality-wise than most salmon in any other restaurants we know. High quality, fresh, highly enjoyable. For the mains we ordered the Veal shank confit and the Milk-fed lamb shoulder. Both excellent dishes. A bottle of red with that . I know duck confit, but veal confit (72 hours) was new to me. What a tender, juicy piece of meat. Actually: Piece of art! And the sauce...heaven! Confit is something you need to try. And this place here would be perfect for that. But also the lamb was wonderful. Equally tender, very smooth and with a rich sauce. You wouldn't even know it's lamb taste-wise, it was just perfect. There wasn't any room for desserts after this rich meal. A really fantastic dinner in a wonderful restaurant with a classic and cosy setting. It was pretty packed, so the staff was pretty busy. But they were quick and attentive, just didn't really have time for a quick chat or so. Price-wise it was fair. Around 150 Euros for two glasses of white, a bottle of red, two starters and two mains. For this quality? I would actually even say more than fair. A great place.

It jumped out as a memorable experience. As you would expect the service was excellent, we were greeted at the door, our coats were taken. A table was ready for us, with a high chair for our baby. All of the staff worked well as a team and we dealt with everyone in the restaurant during our stay. In particular the server who took our orders was very knowledgeable and her English was excellent. The wine server did well but I could tell was a little less comfortable communicating in English but did guide us to some excellent wine based on our preferences. The decor felt hip and fresh. Bright white with darker wood work, openings in the wall provide a small division of the dining area while making it feel open and airy. The silver wear and plates were simple which leaves the food the center of attention. The lighting is warm and there is a small amount of modern art decorating the walls. The food was all very precisely prepared. I like a variety of flavors and foods so the grande galleries with 7 courses suited me well. The courses are pretty small, if you order a la carts you get a slightly larger portion. For example I got a plate with 4 scallops, my mother in law who ordered that specifically had 5. The textures were the most incredible part, with soft oyster-like jellyfish, thick custard like flavor custard, frozen beet disks. A pair of hor'doerves accompanies the meal complimentary. There may be a few things that don't jive with a more conservative palat, but they also had a nice lamb shop and quails coquette that would satisfy most diners. Definitely pricey, I paid 89€ for the gallerie, but I felt the quality of the food and service were up to it. I'll let more refined goers make the determination about how it compares with other gourmet restaurants, but if you are a foodie that wants a fancy meal while you are visiting France, make the trip here.

But the highlight was of course the morel sauce. Plenty of wonderful tasting morels. The steak Tartare is pretty famous here and is prepared right at the table. A huge amount of the best and freshest raw beef. Never had such a big sized steak tartare before...and I've had many. And it wasn't just the biggest, no. It was also the very best Steak Tartare I've had so far. The Crèmant went very well with both the starters and the mains. It came together at around 150 Euros. One of the best pieces of beef I've ever had that I did not prepare myself. Amazing really. The chef took me through the various options on display, all aged 30-60 days, sourced from select regions and producers. It was cooked to effin perfection and amazingly flavorful. It was not a thick cut, about an inch thick, but I knew how much I could enjoy. He weighed it at 330 grams, so 3/4 pound, boneless sirloin. Photo below. It was seasoned well, perhaps a tad too well, but I love salt so that works for me, and was rubbed with garlic and rosemary. I will say it again, delicious. However.... the wines offered, while varied and with many options, were not of the caliber of this meat. I tasted a number of options, with one of the servers, but really nothing fit the structure this meal required. Perhaps the saddest part however, were the sides of roasted potatoes and green beans... over cooked, mushy and completely flavorless. My wife had one of their signature tarts flambées, with "prosciutto and cornichon". So OK, they have their own idea, perhaps "house made?" Prosciutto, which was a very thick, chewy cut, of some cured meat, but nothing resembling what you might expect, and nothing so satisfying as the real DOP product. But the gravest insult was the giant, clearly imported, pickles they used instead of the artisan delicacy of tiny 1-2" crispy bites. Sure, I'm nit-picking, but again, right across the street is their Micheline two star! So, most travelers won't be disappointed, but just thought a few of you might like to know what to expect. If they had even ok sides I probably would have given four stars, but that, and the average service just left us feeling like this place is flying on the reputation more than the execution.

It turns out that everyone enjoyed eating here more than anyplace else on the visit to Strasbourg, including a couple of Michelin-star stops. The burger (topped with ham and cheese) was juicy, well-seasoned and delicious. It was served with very good fries and a fresh green salad. The steak tartare, served on top of crispy hash-brown potatoes, was met with high praise. In addition to main courses, the restaurant has a showcase of beautiful desserts. Due to time constraints, we did not stay for dessert. Service here is excellent. The food came out quickly, and the servers were extremely attentive. When we were ready to leave, they were quick with the bill. They seemed to understand that you may have limited time, so everything moved at a relatively fast pace.

That being said, this place is overall relaxed - my GF and I stopped there on our biking trip across Alsace and asked if they had any spots on the terrace. We were welcomed right away and, after taking a sit were blown away by the quality. First - the wines. Their crémant was excellent, just as their pinot noir. Unsurprising in the least, given that Ammerschwihr is one of the wine capitals of Alsace and the wine comes from the independent winemaker right across the road. And while you are at the entry wines, you are getting as well a "mise-en-bouche" - a small, elaborate snack for you to try to guess the ingredients and wake up your sense of taste. Second, the appetizer and the main dish. Their roasted tomato soup with ricotta was out of this world - absolutely excellent! Similarly, to the roasted neck of Black Iberico pork. A steamed selection of vegetables and baked potatoes as a side were a great touch. Beware however - if you are a vegetarian, you will have a right for a dish of vegetables and potatoes, but no dish for you on the menu, which is unfortunate. Finally, desert and coffee. The deserts are AMAZING. Their coffee machine as well. A baba au rum - a French classic - came with three different supplements and a shot of high-quality rum. Holy crap, was it good.
