Came here on a Saturday night and was seated right away, the restaurant was only about three-quarters full. I ordered the watermelon margarita, which was delicious and not overly sweet, though it didn't seem like it had a full shot of alcohol. We also ordered the guacamole, which was excellent and came out surprisingly quickly. For my entrée, I had the chicken mole enchiladas. The mole sauce was very good, but unfortunately the chicken was a bit dry and chewy. Service was great overall, both food and drinks came out quickly. We were in the area and my fiancé had a craving for Mexican food. We've been hearing many good things about La Esperanza so we figured we'd give it a try. I'd say we made a really good decision. It was pretty crowded for a Tuesday night which was a good sign. We decided to sit at the bar as there were two open bar seats. Our bartender, Anthony, was very personable, had a great sense of humor, and made two very good drinks. Right when we sat down he brought us a bowl of chips that we really enjoyed and a bowl of salsa. We started with an Original Fresh Margarita and a Spicy Orange Margarita. I would order either one of them again and would definitely recommend the Orange if you're into spicy drinks. It took us both a lot of time looking through the menu to decide on our dinner. She ended up choosing chicken tacos and I ordered the Bistec a la Mexicana. The portion sizes were huge. Her order came with three STUFFED soft tacos and she really enjoyed them. My Bistec a la Mexicana was better than I could have imagined. It consisted of steak cooked in a spicy red sauce with onions and jalapeños and was topped with grilled sliced tomatoes. The steak was tender, sauce was flavorful and spicy, and the meal was filling. It also came with a side of rice & beans, and even the sides were large. We both left feeling full and had some food to take home with us. Our experience was very good. Between the service, drinks, food, portion sizes, and value we had nothing to critique or complain about. If you're feeling adventurous try the Fat Alex's Burrito. Two were ordered by guests sitting nearby and both were only able to get through half of their burritos. La Esperanza is a bit of a drive for us and we do have great Mexican restaurants closer, but I wouldn't hesitate to come back again if we're out and nearby. I will say that I've had better Mexican food at other local establishments but the atmosphere and full bar definitely makes for a great time. It's not always easy to find local Mexican restaurants with full bars so major plus there. read more

A top favorite. The food is fresh and homemade, and the margaritas are excellent. My sister always gets the fajitas and I usually get a shrimp dish or a burrito. (This time, I got the Fat Alex which will easily become 3 meals.) The chips and salsa? Divine. The nachitos? Addictive. Fun place and chill vibe! Dining at a table is fine and all, but we love the lively entertainment at the bar. The bartenders are engaging and they make a point of interacting with their patrons. These guys really hustle! I especially love visiting when my New York sports teams are playing. Bring on the smack-talk! The cucumber jalapeño cucumber margarita is our favorite and it's equally as delicious in the frigid winter months as it is in the height of summer (muddled jalapeños, limes, cucumber, Milagro Silver Tequila, and agave nectar - deliciousness!). We've sampled the better part of the appetizer menu and we've always been impressed with the freshness and authenticity of everything we've had. The Ceviche is a giant serving and a great high-protein, low-carb option. La Esperanza closes at 10:00 PM on Friday and Saturday nights, so this is more of a happy hour/dinner establishment. OMG!!! So good!!! Came on a Thursday evening around 8 and was immediately seated. Drinks were placed and they don't skimp on the alcohol, drinks were good. Sixers game 5 was on and when 9pm came, they weren't forcing people to leave. Our food was flavorful, fresh and hot when we received it. I had the steak over plantains minus the egg on top and this was perfect. Steak was seasoned well, plantains were sweet and perfectly cooked and avocado was ripe. I hadn't been there in quite a while. I didn't find the staff particularly warm and friendly years ago. But I decide to give it another chance since the Mexican food factory closed. The bartender was very good and the margarita was good even though they use triple sec. They do not have Cointreau. I sipped on my cocktail and tasted my friends fajita before ordering my own. She got the combination with the steak shrimp and chicken. I tasted a piece of her steak and it was very nice and tender. I ordered mine and asked could it be medium rare. My steak was overcooked and gray, and so tough that I could not eat it. Except for the bartender, I did not feel welcomed by the staff. I doubt if I go back. read more

The food here is nowhere near authentic Mexican food. You can have the same food as On the Border. I was completely disappointed by the food. I was told by so manyyyy people that the food here was great and authentic and oh boy were they all WRONG. The only decent dish we had was the chips with refried beans and cheese. I ordered a carnitas burrito and it was completely lacking flavor. The black beans were not good and the rice was absolutely terrible. Everything really lacked flavor. It had sour cream, lettuce, and tomatoes. Tacos De Carnitas: Score: 3/5 The carnitas (pork) were dry and came in cubes. Visually they did not look appealing and were missing seasoning. A little lack luster after being so raved about by our friends. It was a Wednesday lunch, the bartender sat us which was done pretty promptly considering he was multi tasking, but we were sat right next to the only other little two top in the whole restaurant- not a big deal but would have preferred to not be on top of the only other people there. Our waitress was fantastic, very prompt, perfect timing with everything, and very pleasant. Guacamole was definitely the best thing we had. Chips seemed alittle stale but the Guacamole saved that. We tried a pork tamale, I used salsa and Sour cream to help it. I got the chilli Rellanos - seemed as if it were pre battered a fried? The batter was soggy/mush but plenty of cheese, the sauce wasn't flavorful. My son ordered Chicken Tacos, he ate every bite so I assume they were delicious. This place was great. We are new to the area and always smelled the food from this restaraunt. Finally we decided to try it out on a weekday. It was beautifully decorated inside and the staff was friendly. We were seated immediately. I ordered a steak with rice and beans and my boyfriend ordered steak enchiladas. Absolutely LOVE this place!! We've been coming here for too many years to count ... when it was just the original house with a front porch area. The entire family is so nice and they really take pride in the food they serve. Lots of great options on the menu ... from traditional items to some house specialties. But we always seem to end up with their #6 Combo Gordo (incl. Fat Alex burrito, steak taco, and steak tostada), Bistec a la Mexicana, Bistec a la Criolla, or tacos with a variety of proteins (3 to an order). Many times we end up filling up on the complimentary chips & salsa ... especially after ordering the guacamole (a MUST!) and the ceviche (so fresh!), not to mention the tasty tortilla soup too. And did I mention the drinks?!? Lots of great beers on tap (DH's favs incl. Modelo Negra and other local craft IPAs), a wide selection of tequilas, and a dozen margaritas (my favs incl. house, old school, and fresh ones too!). After having past by this restaurant countless of times, I finally decided to stop in for dinner. It was honestly exactly what I expected given the location. It had a bar atmosphere to it with tables for a more traditional dining experience. You get complimentary chips and salsa, which were tasty. The overall menu was solid with an array of Mexican dishes to try. Many of the dishes are a bit Americanized, as expected, but the food was savory, nonetheless. The guacamole and chips are very good and I highly recommend. I got the burrito with steak and the meat was incredibly flavorful and delicious. The burrito itself I wasn't crazy about and can't pinpoint why. All in all, I would come back here again for one of those lazy nights where I know I could get a solid meal for a decent price point. read more

After Not dining here in a Few years, we Decided to Revisit La Esperanza because they've redone the place and I recently saw a review about "The Fat Alex" Burrito and Not to mention, so my husband can try IT and to Relax and Unwind after a Long week. To my surprise, When I called in to make reservations for 2 for dinner, I was told that they had no reservations and that they were completely booked, but that we could walk-in and I will only be about 15-20 minutes of a wait. For starters, The Chips and homemade Salsa dip is Very very Good! Put it THIS way, my Husband Does NOT like Cilantro and I just about had to Fight him Off the Dip Bowl. Lol. They must've redesigned the Floorplan because each part of the Restaurant seemed to have little areas to have sections of Semi-Private tables. The Bar was Jam packed and Full Of laughing and Happy folks enjoying their Night. A Great place to Be , Definitely. So, after 2 bowls of Chips and Dip and our entrées of the fat Alex burrito for my husband, and chicken quesadilla for myself. Both dishes were Amazingly Delcious and we relax with a Modelo Especial beer! Perfecto!! We enjoyed the ambience and conversing with the staff and they were attentive but not annoying. La Esperanza was an interesting experience. This place has many raving reviews, but frankly, I have no idea why. Coming from South Philly, there are an abundance of great Mexican restaurants, so I was excited to maybe discover a hidden treasure in South Jersey. I was SO wrong. Upon entering the large restaurant space, we only saw two tables occupied. We walked up to the hostesses who were kind, but indifferent to our arrival. We asked for a table for 7 people. They said we had to wait until our entire party arrived before we could be seated. Generally, in my experience, this is only practiced when a restaurant is busy, so we thought it was a little strange considering the empty restaurant. However, we obliged. Once our entire party arrived to the still empty restaurant, we had to wait another 5 mins for them to "pick out and set up" our table. The hostess grabbed the stack of menus, and we instinctively followed, but we were told to stay as she "set it up" again, which consisted of her placing menus in front of each seat. Then she walked back, and lead us to our table. Finally. I had sticker shock the moment I looked at the menu. $14 FOR A BURRITO?!?!? Tacos are three for $10 AND ANOTHER $1 FOR TOMATO AND LETTUCE?! AND ANOTHER $1 FOR CHEESE? Aren't those things supposed to come with it? Not sure if you can tell how surprised I was. I wasn't that hungry, so I decided to share the $14 Fat Alex'sburrito with someone. The most horrible burrito I've ever ordered. On the menu it is described as, "our tender steak wrapped in a large flour tortilla with rice, beans, cheese, sour cream and top with melted cheese." While large in size, this burrito has nothing else going for it. Let me tell you, we did not have any beans or sour cream inside, and the meat was dry and disgusting. The rice had no flavor and was super dry as well. The only saving grace was their hot sauce that we had to ask for more than once from our rather rude and curt waitress. No one at my table enjoyed their food either, especially the service from our hostesses or waitress. With the plethora of Mexican restaurants, there is no need to eat somewhere where the food and service sucks, and the prices cannot be justified. TL;DR: Not worth your time or money. One of my favorite Mexican restaurants. The tostadas and empanadas are really good and I will often just order one of each with a side order of rice and beans for a pretty filling lunch. Fajitas are always good and fresh as well. The Cinco Combo is another favorite choice and usually always leaves me with leftovers. The wait can be a bit during weekend lunch and dinner hours but that's prime time and should be expected at any restaurant. Then when i asked her about it she didn't even apologize, and she lied about it being the same price which it is not. Then the food itself was pretty bland and i dont know why everyone keeps raving about how authentic it is cause it is NOT. Ive also heard that the prices were great and rumors about a happy hour, which are all also lies. No one fixed the price and i ended up having to pay more for food I couldn't even chew (I purposely ordered carnitas because i had recently gotten my wisdom teeth taken out) Never ever coming back and would never EVER recommend this place to anyone either. They seemed to be definitely understaffed so service was a little bit slow. The bartender seemed like he couldn't handle the amount of people.
