Another beautiful sunny day out and I was returning from my first visit to the Denton Animal Shelter. I really want a dog. I just need a better situation before I can realistically do that. I was heading home on McKinney and I'm always passing by La Estrella but never stopped in. I noticed that a couple of police officers had been there on my way to the shelter and figured I would give it a try finally. It's funny, just like Rasoi, it's a gas station with no gas. I got street tacos. $1.25 for corn $1.50 for flour. There's a good selection with asada, pollo, pastor, barbacoa and lengua. Also like all street tacos they were served with onions, lime and cilantro. I went with pollo, pastor and barbacoa. It came with red and green hot sauces. Both weren't overly spicy. I prefered the green to the red. It was sweet at first with a spice at the back end. The red was more or less heat, but it was good. As for the tacos, they were pretty good. The barbacoa and pastor were the stars. Great flavors and really moist. The pollo was good but a little on the dry side. Also a little on the small side, but as I said really good. They have tortas, quesadillas and burgers on the menu as well and all fairly inexpensive. I want to go back and try some of the other items. Gotta now find time to do that. Support Denton businesses. Enjoy.

Just tried this place out for the first time- it's been on our list for awhile. We ordered Barbacoa, pastor & bean and chorizo breakfast tacos- they were all delicious. I'd give the barbacoa a 5! Staff was friendly & all 4 tacos cost us less than $10

This is an unassuming place that's inside a convenience store with some gas pumps out front and a carwash in the back. There is one register shared between the convenience store, food counter and drive thru. The store is an average size with the normal fare of drinks, beer and snacks. There are six tables by the windows if you want to dine in. While we were there almost everyone went with to go orders and the drive thru. Thought it was cool that the drive thru was not only for the food, but for milk and beer and other convenience store items too. We went during an off peak time, but by the time we left, a line was getting pretty long due to having only one register. I had a severe craving for flautas and was having a difficult time finding it on the menu. When I asked about it, the girl taking our order said she would ask the cook. I guess it used to be on the menu but was now under a piece of paper advertising something else. The answer ended up being a yes and it was $8 for 4 flautas, rice and beans. My husband went with a quesadilla with asada. The quesadillas ranged in the $6-7 range. The music was extremely loud and the girl taking our order was very soft spoken and made no effort to project, so I felt like I was practically on top of the counter trying to hear her. She also wasn't very free with information or suggestions on what they had despite us telling her we hadn't been here before and weren't familiar with what they offered. Not a huge deal, but it would have been nice. The food took a while, but we were in no hurry on a Saturday afternoon. I think they were putting the drive thru and to go orders ahead of dine in, which is a common practice. The food was up as it was ready, my plate hit the counter first. When I went to retrieve it I was greeted by a really fast string of Spanish and when I asked for a repeat the woman cooking repeated herself just as fast... I think she was telling us that the quesadilla was coming next. Friendlier than the girl that took the order, just hard for me to understand. My bad, I never paid enough attention in high school Spanish class. I also noticed her watching us eat from time to time looking for a reaction, so it seems she takes a lot of pride in the food she is cooking. That's nice to see. The flautas were perfectly crispy, so good! I've seen some reviews stating the chicken is dry compared to the other meats, but I felt like it was the perfect meat for the little fried treasures. The veggies and cheese and sour cream was all fresh, and also refreshing. The beans were kind of watery and the rice was a little greasy, but the rice tasted pretty good. The quesadilla was huge and they didn't skimp on either the meat or the cheese. This place doesn't seem like it's that cheap compared to other spots in town, but I can definitely say the portions were huge! Good first experience and I look forward to coming back and trying some tacos!

Carne Asada Tacos- ugh!!! So good!

I don't understand why this place does not have more reviews. Good lord. My partner in crime and I like to consider ourselves sort of adventure taco-connoisseurs. We love to go out and try different taco places all over DFW. This place has the best tacos in Denton hands down. Though they are awfully small--- tortillas are made fresh right in front of you, so are the ingredients. Prices are excellent for what you get, but I think with the small tacos you get good quality food. These are legit street tacos. Please don't be taken aback by the appearance of this little convenient store. It's like a small concrete building next to a car wash, parking is very minimal. When you go inside, it is also a tight space. The wait can be a little Long but they make everything super fresh. Order your food, wait for it, and enjoy. You won't regret it. Our tacos didn't make it out of the parking lot. Definitely a place you have to return too!

I haven't eaten at this place, I will have to go back and try their food. I will say that the elote guy outside of this place is phenomenal! That is by far the best elote I've ever had. They guy making the elote was so nice and told us to try his homemade sauce and it was great!!!! Can't wait to go back!

Breakfast Taco and Regular Flour Tacos

Update 3/15- Bumped them down a star because of their inconsistent pricing and shady managment. Turns out you do have the option to order their carne asada taco in their fresh flour tortilla, they just think it needs to be $6 which is about the same price as their much larger burrito.. Didn't find this out until already paying $3.50 for them and the management made the cashier hassle me for extra payment. I ended up switching to basic egg and bacon tacos which were only $2.50 less than a week ago, but turns out they're $3.50 today? The cashier was as sweet as she could be for the situation, but this place is just getting frustrating. Their breakfast tacos are good, but I can find cheaper and about as good elsewhere. Veronica's across the street has killer chorizo, potato, and egg tacos on super fresh flour tortillas for reference. Taqueria Monterrey is the place to go for delicious and cheaper carne asada/barbacoa tacos, because their flour tortillas are now about the same. ---- I feel conflicted bumping my review down, since I still really love eating here. The inconsistencies in quality and service though are why I bump it down. The flour tortilla they use on the regular tacos goes back and forth in quality. In the past it's been a super fresh, almost crispy flour tortilla. Just a few months ago I received those fresh tortillas, when the year prior I stopped coming due to a switch in tortillas. Lately it's switched again to a flour tortilla that's comparable to store bought in texture and taste. I figured that maybe I made a mistake and should've specifically requested the homemade flour tortilla, but I still received the same one after clarifying with them that my order will have the homemade flour tortilla. It's not bad, it's just that I've grown to love and expect the other fresher tortilla when I come here. It was one of the main reasons I loved this place. With this current flour tortilla, I'm more inclined to go to Taqueria Monterrey instead for tacos. This last time, they made a pretty big mistake on my order. I ordered a large order of bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast tacos. The cheese is 50 cents extra per taco, which I usually don't mind. The problem is, they didn't add cheese to any of the tacos. For my big order, that ended up as a costly mistake for me. I will say their carne asada and breakfast tacos are fantastic still. They tie with Monterrey for my favourite carne asada in town. Their breakfast tacos are still my favourite in town, specifically the bacon one. They luckily still use their fresh tortilla for the breakfast tacos, so those will always be worth it. Their green salsa is also one of my favourites in town; it's refreshing but spicy. Worth noting the corn guy I mentioned in my previous review no longer cooks out here, but there's a new corn guy that also makes wings. Haven't tried it yet, but they appear to be here at nights. They're pretty active on Instagram and tag themselves at La Estrella, so that might be the best way to track them.

Meh probs won't be back. It's small, bland and over priced. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing but I doubt it.

Everything we ordered was delicious. The guacamole tasted super fresh, the queso was flavorful and came in a generous portion, and the salsa had just the right amount of kick without being too spicy. The only small hiccup was the chips situation--they give you big portions of guac, queso, and salsa, but the chips come in a tiny bowl. (Literally 10 chips) very sad for 6 people to fight over so little of chips. Not a huge deal, just a bit surprising. We also tried the margaritas--they had great flavor, though they tasted absent of tequila. Overall, we really enjoyed it and would definitely go back...maybe next time we bring our own chips! :)

Let me set the scene: I walked in expecting a casual meal and maybe a decent taco. What I got instead was a borderline spiritual awakening wrapped in foil and served with rice and beans. First of all -- the giant piña colada. When they say giant, they are not messing around. This thing arrived like it had its own gravitational pull. I'm pretty sure I saw a small family of tourists orbiting it. One sip and I was transported to a beach that doesn't even exist on any map -- coconutty, icy perfection with just enough kick to make me briefly consider texting my boss that I've moved to an island and won't be returning. Then came the beans. Listen carefully: I don't throw this word around lightly -- perfect. These beans were so good I genuinely paused mid-bite and just stared into the middle distance reevaluating my entire life. Creamy, rich, seasoned like someone's abuela whispered ancient secrets into the pot. I would trust these beans with my taxes, my passwords, and honestly my emotional well-being. And the corn tortillas... dear lord, the corn tortillas. I have had tortillas in many places, including at my own abuela's table -- and saying this feels like confessing a sin -- but these might be the best I've ever had besides abuela's. Warm, soft, slightly charred in all the right places, like they were handmade by someone who has been perfecting this craft since before I was born and possibly before electricity was invented. If I could build a house out of these tortillas, I would. I would live there. Happily. And then--just when I thought things couldn't escalate further--the huevos rancheros arrived. Eggs cooked to that perfect sweet spot where the yolk still has a little rebellion left in it, laid over a bed of everything that matters, all tied together with a sauce that refuses to be anything less than unforgettable. It's the kind of breakfast that makes you question why you ever settle for anything less in life. Comforting, bold, and somehow both rustic and wildly impressive at the same time. Everything else on the plate? Outstanding. Rice that actually deserves to be eaten and not just politely ignored. Salsa that sneaks up on you like, "oh this is nice--OH okay there it is." Service? Friendly, fast, and somehow emotionally supportive. Atmosphere? The kind of place where you immediately feel like a regular even if it's your first time. Final verdict: If you are anywhere within a 50-mile radius of Denton and you are not eating at La Fondita Mexican Restaurant, you are making a series of deeply questionable life choices. I came in hungry. I left changed.

We started things off right with chips, jalapeño ranch dip, and queso, which is honestly the only proper way to begin a Chuy's visit. The queso was warm, creamy, and exactly what my soul needed, and the chips with that jalapeño ranch were the cherry on top. Speaking of cherries, we also got the Tito's cherry limeade, and it was the spring we didn't know we needed to bounce. Crisp, cold, a little dangerous in the cutest way, and honestly adorable -- the perfect little kick to start the meal. Our waiter was top notch: kind, attentive, and somehow always there right when we needed something without ever hovering. That kind of service makes the whole experience feel easy and enjoyable. For food, we ordered the Baja shrimp tacos, and when I say the shrimp is BIG, I mean it (and no, we're definitely not out here flattering any men ). The shrimp was cooked perfectly, flavorful, and absolutely the star of the plate. They came with rice and beans, and even though I forgot to ask for the cilantro lime rice , I was still super happy with everything. We also got the steak fajita Tex-Mex burrito bowl, and every single bite just kept getting better. The steak was tender, packed with flavor, and once it all got mixed together with the salsa and scooped up on the crispy tostada, it was perfection.
