Went to an event in nearby Industry City and decided to try out this place recommended by a pal of mine who mentioned this place was around for a long time. While inside seemed cool with a pub feeling atmosphere, the food was not what I really expected. Granted, they make an excellent mojito and the wait staff were very pleasant and friendly(just make sure your Spanish is up to par ). We did the yellow rice with beans and pernil. The pernil was ok, flavored nice but on the dry side. The yellow rice was bland, dry and likely sitting for a while. The beans, I had black beans, were not seasoned enough and didn't help much with the rice. Joke of the night was be careful when putting hot sauce on the food. Usually we give squirts from the bottle, this bottle poured out lol. I didn't mind, I love hot sauce but check the bottle before you put some on otherwise you'll get more than what you want. Little pricey but not worth it with the quality of food we were served. But at least the mojitos were on point. Maybe we caught them on an off night so I might give them a second chance in the future whenever I'm back on that side of town. Until then, my review stands for now. read more

The food was mediocre. I'm Dominican so I was expecting some bomb food. I was highly disappointed. We ordered the precooked food from the buffet. I got the goat with white rice and black beans. The rice was hard and cold. Felt like the rice had been sitting there for hours. Not fresh at all. The meat was also cold and the gravy too watery. I sent it back and they reheated it(maybe in the microwave?). Still couldn't eat it. The worst part was the hair on my plate. It was on the edge of my plate. We also got a green salad with avocado. It came with dressing already on it and 3 thin slices of avocado. It had way too much dressing and they added cracked pepper. We also had the 2x$5 chicken empanadas(pastelitos). The chicken lacked seasoning so I only ate half of one. The only decent thing was the morirsoñando(orange juice and milk drink). My husband got the yellow rice, red beans and pernil(roasted pork). His rice was hard and cold and the meat was a very small portion. He left most of it. Do yourself a favor and do not eat here. The entire bill was $72 and the tip was already included. A very underwhelming experience, as needed some food right away after going to wine fest and needing some food. We came here as Spanish food is rarely a miss at a spot like this, the place was chill and was able to sit quickly. The waitress was attentive at first and after ordering it felt like they freshly made each item as it took awhile to bring out items like rice, beef stew, a sanwhich that are easily accessible from the front when we passed through the restaurant. As we are accustomed to restaurants like this it was very uncommon for the food to take this long and especially when a table that came after us got their food served before us. It was really unsettling and questionable. We almost got up to leave but our food appeared right after them. The food was appeasing as we were starving, I wasn't crazy about the texture of the rice, as it seemed sticky but served it's purpose and just left right after. Stepped in to get a quick dinner. I got a veggie plate which on the menu cost $10, but was charged $12. The veggie plate consisted of a salad, rice, plantains, and some roasted veggies. Since we got 4 items, instead of 3, there was an extra $2 charge. We weren't given a choice and had to pay the extra cost. Don't do that. Just be upfront on how much your food costs. Service was also slooooooow. I was asked what kind of rice I wanted and I told the server rice and beans and just got plain old white rice. Total fail. This place seems better as a bar than a restaurant. Heavy pours on the margaritas, but yeah don't eat here. Watch the game and have a beer instead. read more

MUST AVOID! I love to support local establishments (especially restaurants during COVID) however this was the worst dining experience ever. We waited for 40 minutes and only reason we got the food because I went inside to pay for the drinks and cancel the food order. The food was not even hot, the servers were overall rude and I had to ask for my bill and pay. Food was nothing special and we ate our meals in half of the time it took to get it. I wish I would have read reviews from others before coming here. We were also missing some beans but at that point we didn't care after waiting for so long. If it wasn't that my father was here I would have gotten up and left. They took 40 mins to bring us our food and that was as far as I can calculate , probably was longer. We were the only customers, what the heck is the wait about! We saw them go to the store to buy some stuff smh. The fastest move from them was bringing the check and cleaning the table. I didn't want to stay from the get because I didn't want anything on their breakfast menu. Trying to be a good sport I ordered 1 steak and 1 chicken taco. They brought me 3 of each smh! The people in here are just really friendly. It's equally nice and comfortable to either stop in for lunch, dinner, or just a beer after work. Recently, I grabbed a pork sandwich, with lettuce, tomato and mayo, and it really hit the spot. Since I've recently switched to FiOS and have been subjected to their "Long Island, local news channel", I was pleasantly surprised to find NY1 news channel. "It's on in here". Good place. We are asian american and stumbled in as a group. Food was decent considering there's not much competition in the neighborhood when it comes to dominican food. Nothing outstanding quality/flavorwise but the customer service was lacking. Overly smily but very fake friendly. When asking for their Happy hour beer, they were out of it and recommended another but did not disclose cost difference (seriously between corona and Heineken which should cost same). They are much friendlier naturally to their regulars which are usually single south american middle I stumbled in with a group immediately after moving to the neigh aged men. i do occasionally walk by and it can be an enjoyable meal for families that speak their native tongue. read more

I ordered 3 beef tacos for $7.50, On the menu it says ONIONS OR GUACAMOLE I placed the order at the bar and told one of the waitresses I was staying. I waited 1/2 and hour for 3 beef tacos ONLY (I was alone the place was empty only two men by the bar drinking at 12:30 PM) When I finally got my order they were (1) DRY as hell! Only meat and cilantro plus a few limes that they give you! (2) I asked where's the guacamole? The girl says there is none WTF?????? (3) They are cold the tacos the meat was cold!!! The corn outer shell we call tortas was cold!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!! I left NO tip see photos!!!! Stay away from this place! The girls are mean and rude! AND the BEST PART???? This restaurant has excellent value and is quite tasty. Whether you are going for lunch or dinner, there are excellent choices. They have a good size menu with plenty of options and seven days a week they have a "lunch buffet." Essentially, for $5-$7 (depending on the meat) you can choose from about a dozen options on their buffet cart for your plate. They also have happy hour options! Don't speak Spanish? They always have someone on staff that is bilingual. I've been here twice. Once I ordered from the menu: Bisteca y cebollas (steak and onions) and got a side of maduros (sweet plantains). The steak was excellently marinated and spiced and the onions were a great complement to the meal. It made two meals for me, because the portions were large. The maduros were soft, shiny, greasy, sweet, and tasty and just makes me drool thinking of them and the experience. Another time I ordered from their "buffet." I looked at what they had there and told my waitress that I wanted the rotisserie chicken, mixed rice, and maduros. Unfortunately they gave me tostones by accident, but I still enjoyed them. The chicken was tasty and enjoyable to the very last bite. Too much food meant leftovers again. The staff here is friendly, efficient, and is easily accessible. The restaurant never seems to be packed as most people do takeout or sit by the bar. You can get out of here for lunch for $5 or so and for dinner not much more than that. This place is an truly authentic Dominican experience. I recently moved to the area and was passing it all the time leaving the subway. Being used to all the upscale restaurants and Manhattan, I was a little skeptical about this place being good (or any restaurant in this area). Finally, I was so hungry one night the buffet I saw through the window drew me in. I ordered both fried and roasted pork plate. The food was AMAZING. You can eat at the fully stocked bar or dine at a table. The food was very reasonably price and I left full and happy. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for something quick to eat. You are not in Manhattan. This is Sunset Park. This place caters to the locals. This is not a five star restaurant and no one should expect it to be. Having said that. This place is a hidden gem in Brooklyn. 2 people can eat lunch with drinks for 20$ if not less. The pernil and the ravo is amazing. I had their roasted chicken half and it was great. Sundays they have a beer special - 3 beers for $10. I don't see how anyone would have to wait to get their meal on Seamless or walking in - they have all their food in warming trays at the front of the restaurant presumably to facilitate take out customers but if you get table service you get your meal from there too. The kitchen is downstairs and the staff communicates through intercom to keep him up to speed. Maybe Seamless is going to the wrong restaurant. There's another place with the same name a couple of blocks away. If you are a guy you will appreciate the bevy of lovely ladies that work here. These guys need to get their sh*t together, DESPERATELY. Today was the second time we've ordered from them. Both times were through seamless web (so we ordered online). We do this often, and it usually takes no longer than two minutes to receive an email confirming that the place we ordered from received our order. BOTH TIMES at La Familia, it took forty minutes. So they only RECEIVED our orders FORTY minutes after we placed them. Now, I should mention that I've worked in the food service industry (being both a bartender and a waitress) for over ten years, and I understand the daily mishaps that are unavoidable in these places. It's understandable, and I easily forgive. But with this place, I can't get over their lack of organization, professionalism, and overwhelming lack of comprehension for how they should operate their business in order to be successful. The first time we ordered from them was a Saturday night. Our food got to our house an hour and forty five minutes after placing our order, which by the way, we did not get an apology for. But to be fair, the amount of food we got, especially considering what we paid for it, was TREMENDOUS. This place is cheap and do make certain foods quite well. (FYI -- i ordered a burger and fries, which, while the fries were plentiful, they were horrible, and my burger was NOT rare, as I had ordered it, but instead was WELL DONE. This, to me, indicates that their burgers are frozen.) I also ordered a pastrami sandwich, which was awful. The pastrami was thick, like beef jerky. And my husband had called before we ordered on seamless to ask what kind of chicken pieces come with the fried chicken order,only to find out that they were out of fried chicken. Hmm. Fried chicken seems to be a pretty popular food, so to find out they were out did not inspire confidence. Nevertheless, we ordered from them anyway. Today when we ordered, it was another forty minutes before they received the order, then another hour before they called my husband to ask him what side I wanted with my egg sandwich (because apparently their seamless page did not have the correct settings). So they had only BEGUN to make our food AN HOUR AND FORTY MINUTES AFTER WE PLACED THE ORDER. Then, another half hour later, a woman from the restaurant called my husband to ask what our cross streets were, as she was WALKING THE ORDER OVER from their location TWENTY BLOCKS AWAY. My husband said, "You know what? It's already been so long since we placed the order, and our food will be cold by the time you get here, so I'd like to cancel the order." Our doorbell just rang, with our food in the hands of a delivery boy. My husband and I ordered two egg sandwiches, and we got omelets instead. And, again, in case you've forgotten, WE CANCELED THE ORDER. But it showed up anyway, two hours and fifty minutes after we placed it. Nice. I thought I was going to die. After coming out of the subway, late night in November. I wanted a quick bite to eat. Notice La Familia Restaurant was still open. I ordered up beef stew with peas and rice. I knew something was up, when one of the patrons ( drinking beer) watched as the lady behind the counter scoop the rice in the tin container, as if "something was wrong". When I got home, I had half of my meal and saved the other half to take to work for lunch. When I got up in the next morning. The problems began. I was so bloated. After telling a coworker of my woes, he informed me that it may have been the rice. Establishment such as (yours truly) tend to cook the rice in the morning and have it on burners throughout the day. The rice may have become sour. As a result, a weeks worth of bloating made me miserable . Never again will I cross their threshold. After the fact, passing on my way to the subway for work, I notice the "Pending Grade" sign from the Health Department. read more
