After living in Rennes for nearly two months with no semblance of any kind of Asian food, I was so happy to see nems being sold outside for Fête de la Musique! These nems were atop a bowl of vermicelli noodles and being sold for just a few euro. Given how cold and rainy Fête de la Musique was this year, I was expecting these nems to be rubbery and cold. They were not.
I have no idea how long these nems were sitting out, because they were definitely not warm. However, they were still incredibly crispy! I was a bit astounded at how crispy they were given the current weather conditions. The noodles were tasty, but I wasn't sure if it was two months of vermicelli withdrawal talking.
I returned two weeks ago in a moment of weakness (hey, I really needed Asian food) and got an appetizer of nems with another order of vermicelli noodles. No, it most assuredly wasn't the withdrawal talking. These were good noodles. The pork in the noodles had a very good flavor, and it tasted just as it should. My only complaint is the sauce for the vermicelli, which appeared to be lacking in fish sauce. Oh yes, and the vermicelli here is served hot, which was a bit surprising, since I've always gotten cold vermicelli in the States.
In any case, if you are craving good Vietnamese food in Rennes, this is where you should go. read more
