I really enjoy the services, the worship, the sermons and running into old friends from the area.

Are your Sunday services now, June 2021, back to being in person? Or are they still streamed online?

Yes! We have in-person services at 9am and 10:45am. We have both indoor and outdoor seating (the outdoor is on comfy couches with shade sails, outdoor TV's and speakers). Let me know if you have any other questions. Sandra (assist@ljcfemail.org)

Wow, this place is beautiful…read more I visited twice during their open house and had a great time. Everyone is so friendly and it was well organized. They had groups of ~15-20 people at a time that followed a tour guide for approx 45 min. They allowed us to see some of their sealing rooms, baptism rooms, locker rooms, the celestial room, and much more. They had shuttles for parking. They provided lots of information about their beliefs without being pushy. What a great experience!

When they announced that it would be open to the public for a limited time, I made sure to reserve a tour. Admission is free. Parking was a bit challenging, but we eventually found a spot. We thought we might be late, but no one even checked our tickets. I am going to assume this was all just for crowd control. Lady said hundreds of people had visited the daily. Once you arrive, volunteers direct you where to go, and there are plenty of people available to help guide visitors through the process. Before entering, staff assist everyone with shoe covers. Photography and video recording are not allowed inside. The temple contains a lot of interesting artwork throughout. One of the first areas visitors see is the baptismal pool, which is supported by statues of twelve bulls, each representing a specific meaning. As you move through the temple, volunteers make sure visitors stay with the designated tour route. We also saw large locker and changing rooms, similar in size to those found at a gym or spa, where members change into white clothing for temple ceremonies. Overall, the interior was not what I expected. I had imagined grand marble floors, rich dark woodwork, and a more traditional sense of luxury often found in historic churches and temples. Instead, there was light-colored carpeting throughout, including on the staircases, dated furniture, along with various ceremonial and prayer rooms. The ceilings were impressive, and the chandeliers were beautiful. One volunteer explained that skylights had been added during the renovation, which was an interesting detail because they looked pretty plain to me but I guess they were bigger rooms. The furnishings, however, felt somewhat underwhelming to me, especially considering the resources the church is often associated with. The space was certainly unique, but different from what I had envisioned. It's also worth noting that this is not where regular Sunday church services are held, and visitors are only allowed to see certain areas of the temple. Despite my mixed impressions, I'm glad I finally had the opportunity to see the inside after being curious about it for so many years. It was an interesting experience and one I'm happy I didn't miss.

COFFEE HOUR At the conclusion of the recessional hymn and postlude, the congregation faithfully gathers in the courtyard for coffee and cheer. I have rarely seen a coffee hour as welcoming and warm as this one, nor with such tasty coffee! Stick around after service to get to know this amazing community's members if you're visiting! THE MUSIC! This last visit was just after New Years '22, and the program featured an offertory performance of "He Shall Feed His Flock" from Messiah that moved to tears. Wow. I wanted to shout "BRAVA!!! BRAVA!" at its end, but alas, the solemnity of the service prevailed, and the congregation held their applause. But wow! Is this the standard every week? YES!! MEMORY LANE St James by the sea was my first ever Episcopalian church service in my life. We would escape the AZ summer heat by fleeing to San Diego (we are called "Zonies"). Some friends (Barbara and Creighton Lilly, RIP) invited us to join for Sunday service because they had a new music director (35 years ago) and a Bosendorfer piano to boot. I shall never forget processing for communion between the choir sitting on opposite sides of me, serenading me with a glorious motet and anthem. Nor how I knelt to receive the wafer and sipped the most amazing wine! (Roman Catholic sacristans need to take a lesson from the Episcopalians!) With the choir mostly off for the summer, I was invited to play piano solos during offertory and communion on that beautiful piano! Ah the memories of that beautiful breeze with the church's main doors flung open during the service! BALANCE NEEDED I remember trying to balance the hymnal, prayer book, service leaflet, and prayer insert as I made my way through the liturgy. (Now it's neatly prepared in a program and easy to read. Ha!) What a special treat and coincidence that I happened to be in town and attend on the Sunday when that very music director retired! Wow! JUST GO If you're a classical music lover and in San Diego looking for a cheerful, welcoming and inspiring Sunday service, St James by the Sea May be the one for you. Put on your Sunday best, toot a few lalalalalala's in the car to warm up the voice, and enjoy!

Our two kids (13 and 10) have been apart of the preschool on campus, the Sunday School and Young Families Programs for years. This church truly feels like a hidden gem perched atop a mountain looking out to the Cross atop Mt Soledad from our comfortable seats. The views alone are breathtaking and create a peaceful, uplifting atmosphere the moment you arrive. From the very first visit, you're welcomed with genuine kindness and a strong sense of community that makes you feel right at home. The pastor is outstanding--thoughtful, engaging, and deeply inspiring--while the worship director brings incredible talent and heart to each service. The music is meaningful and beautifully done, adding so much to the overall worship experience. Families will especially appreciate the children's Sunday school program, which is nurturing and clearly loved by both kids and parents. It's wonderful to see a congregation that is not only growing, but doing so with intention, warmth, and a shared sense of purpose. This is a truly special place--one that nourishes the soul, builds community, and offers a stunning reminder of God's presence through both people and creation.

Every message from Pastor Markus is put in context, and even when the passage is something I've heard preached on before, I come away with a new perspective on it and a way to apply it to my life. Our kids love Sunday school where they quickly came to know all of the kids. They are sad when the Thursday night bible study is on break because they can't wait to go play with their friends (and hear a Bible story from the ministry director :)). The best part of this church is the welcoming congregation. After a few weeks of attending it felt like we were already a part of the church. There are people of all ages and we all love to fellowship with delicious snacks after service.
