I can't really speak on the quality of the IOP or PHP programs. My experience just... was not what I expected at all and I had since found better sober livings (which is saying a lot, because those were still inherently stressful but I at least stayed long-term. La Jolla Recovery set the bar very low). I've been in sober living for a year now, and I am now leaving. Never any relapses, graduated a program, did all the things. I'm at least in a better place from it. La Jolla Recovery was NOT that place for me. I began in April 2025. I stayed for a total of two nights before I had to leave to go to the emergency room, back to the inpatient. I was inpatient for about two weeks before I came to La Jolla Recovery. I had recently quit cannabis and was seeking mental health treatment. At first glance, it seemed chill. I had friends who had gone here and apparently had a positive experience. The groups were decent, staff were friendly, there was available snacks, etc. They had outings at the cove, etc. However, the sober living was......... awful! I stayed at a sober living house where I was immediately prescribed medication I had not taken while inpatient, but was forced to take it. One of these medications were entirely new to me, Trazodone. There was a delay in getting my mood stabilizers, anti-psychotic, and anti-anxiety medicine. I had never taken Trazodone before, but having nothing else available to me, I took it as prescribed/was pressured into taking it by the sober living manager who organized medications. The first night, I had stayed up ALL night. I was hyper vigilant, no need for sleep, and a little paranoid. During the day, it was... okay. I didn't really know what was impacting me considering how vulnerable my mental health was and the chaotic nature of being in sober living for the first time. The second night, I took the medication again. Again, I was feeling overstimulated, overwhelmed and restless/anxious. The sober living manager gave me a 2nd one, and I felt pressured to take it/was told "it would help me calm down and sleep"; that's when the shit show began. Immediately, I started hallucinating visual shapes and became scared. The best way I could describe it was "my brain was on fire." I have a history of epilepsy in childhood, and my first thought was "Oh my god, am I going to have a seizure?" My mind began severely racing and I asked her if I could call my parents and I thought I needed to go to the hospital. Coincidentally, my aunt called during this time. She, and another house manager, told her I had gone to sleep and didn't let her talk to me. This was a lie. I sat on the sofa, feeling severely anxious and panicked. I was not aggressive, overly disruptive, anything of the sort. Everyone was in their rooms at that point, as it was time for bed. I did, however, kept asking for them to call my parents because I was afraid I was having a medical emergency (I definitely was) and asked to go to the hospital. I had never hallucinated like that EVER, I had no previous history of psychosis. Initially, she told me "I am NOT going to let you ruin this house for the other girls," meanwhile, I had gotten along with the roommates and even knew some of them from having been in recovery before. I was clean, kind, and tried my best to be considerate. I introduced myself to people, wrote a note explaining my situation, and tried to be as mindful as I could be considering I was already in a vulnerable state, having experienced a death in my family, a sexual assault, and other traumatic occurrences within the few months prior to me seeking support and help. Then, she and the other woman (a fellow house manager?) threatened to call the police and have me taken away in handcuffs. I had done NOTHING illegal; I had no substances on my person, I respected everyone's space and items, I broke no laws. Holy hell, I was there for 2 days and was trying to get acclimated to a new environment. What was the crime, having a mental health episode as a result of a new medication mishap? Eventually, I was able to get my parents on the phone. They spoke to her directly and said that if I could leave the sober living in an ambulance, they would meet me at the hospital. I waited patiently for the ambulance and went to the emergency room, where I waited all night and was placed back in inpatient in the ICU at Sharp Mesa Vista. There, I was restabilized and put in a different sober living. The aggression from the house manager, the lack of empathy, the lying, and the arbitrary difficulty to even get into communication with my support system was actually insane. She felt like a wolf in sheep's clothing; fronted as a kind and caring person, but then would switch and be quite scary once I was in crisis. I was told by one of my friends who works in recovery that she has since left/been replaced, but oh my god, I pray that they thoroughly vet their housing managers at this point if they want retention. 0/5 stars. Do not go here do not let your loved ones go here. Brian in admissions told me he was signing me up for a 30 day dual diagnosis program. After being there 6 days I was told I have to do 30 in detox then I move to mental health house and do 30 there. He knew very well I had only 30 days. The house on their website that's all beautiful on the beach, only holds 6 clients. And the detox house is nasty old rundown apartments with old couches, no table to eat at, nothing on the walls. Just like a frat house. Everyone just sits in their rooms watches tv and eats junk food. Brian from admissions showed up when I became angry that he lied to me about my time there, and he started trying to convince me that doing the program their way was what was right for me. I left and it really screwed me up to have been lied to and shoved into the wrong program just so they could make money They are taking advantage of people with mental illness and people with substance abuse issues by signing them up for programs that do not meet their needs. read more

It was a shit show. The housing is filthy and so is the center. Don't go here if that makes a difference! I cleaned for two weeks until my back went out. They thanked me but then said if I didn't go to the center for groups, even though they gave Telehealth,I would be kicked out! I never missed my curfew and attended everything I was supposed to. They charge insurance 3900 for urinal samples they take three times a week. One of my roommates had silver and she showed me they were charging her insurance 8900 for her urine samples ! So me and my girlfriend came here for php/iop it seemed okay at first, crappy rundown facilities but nice staff...that was until my insurance lapsed(just mine not my gfs) and she was told she could no longer get a completion letter even though(and I will post screenshots) she had been told she would receive one she desperately needed for her probation! Just make sure if you go here you don't need a completion letter and that they really like you(they have favorites they do more for). The vans are rundown, literally breaking down while riding in them, the houses are SHIT, and they only want you there while they can FULLY milk your insurance. I WOULD RECOMMEND 9/10 of the treatments I've been to, this place is the 1/10!!! However some of the staff are A1 including Brittney, Shelby, Dionna, and John :) read more

What a great place! LJR has its bumps, as with ANY recovery facility. I was shown nothing but the best in regards to how helpful staff was and the focus for recovery. Clean and safe. The only thing I would change is a better location for detox. The detox townhouses are awful. Very small and cramped. Other than that. LJR is an amazing program. 11 months sober! Hands down, my life got saved at this establishment. I went in a full blown alcoholic and came out with my life completely turned around. The work wasn't easy but the support was there. The houses were just fine, one toilet had a flapper go out, they fixed it eventually. Tv in every room, full pantry and fridge, couldn't really ask for more. The first week was the easiest, the detox week, you could lay in bed as long as you like. The other weeks it seemed like we had little downtime which was really good. Between the classes they would take you to the beach and other areas to check out meetings. The only negative I could see here is when people didn't want to FULLY commit themselves and do the work. Not many like to follow house rules as an adult, but we were all there for a reason. Staff was VERY cool with me simply by following instructions. If you can afford it, I highly recommend this place! The staff here and the environment that they foster has truly impacted my recovery in the best way possible. As much as i hate leaving a long review, to summarize only feels disingenuous considering the love i have for the staff members. For starters, Sean is a genuinely great guy who makes you feel safe, comfortable and heard. He's fun yet professional and super down to earth. I hope he knows how grateful i am for his presence and support. My girl Brittney is another incredible human. Her positive, nurturing energy is so infectious. I consider myself blessed to consider her a friend. Last but certainly not least, Big John is the man!! He is very productive, protective and kind hearted. What a unprofessional company please look elsewhere people if you or someone you know needs help This is not a good fit for anyone to be treated the way he was handling the call .. Complete scam. The staff care about you, but upper management and directors do not. Charged me over $80k in required piss tests. Same person that owns LJR also owns the blood test and piss test lab. I was sexually harassed by one of my roommates and after reporting it to 10 different staff members, they refused to move or kick her out for 4 more days. Since then, I've felt like an outcast from LJR. I haven't relapsed and am now 10 months sober. They have never reached out to me or cared for me in any way like they do other people in the program. They have sick sense of favoritism and the photos posted r NOT what u get! The different houses I stayed in were rat and roach infested! Don't trust this place! Go to Soledad! Even employees that moved over to Soledad claim it's a million times better!!! read more

What an amazing experience. Coming from Oklahoma to a completely different state was challenging for me and my wife. Unfortunately we didn't start here first. Coming with your spouse to get sober was a challenge all in itself because so many detox and rehabs have false claims stating that you will be together, however that is a lie. But thankfully La Jolla kept us together and upheld their word on everything, including allowing us to keep our beloved Service Dog. The entire staff was amazing one of the program directors Ms. Nolan was extremely transparent and so inspiring to my wife and such a positive role. The staff are amazing in general, words cannot express my gratitude to this awesome recovery program. I was so fortunate to find this place because I truly believe it saved my life. I was caught in the grips of the relentless cycle of addiction. I would have periods of time when I wanted to get clean but no matter what I tried I could not get out of this devastating cycle. Addicted to drugs for 15 years I was hopeless and running out of options. I was not only hurting myself but hurting my family. I stumbled across La Jolla Recovery online while desperately searching through countless treatment centers in search of one with a long-term option. I knew 30 days was simply not enough for a case like mine. I called the number and spoke to man, Daniel, whom I later found out was the owner. He walked me through the different phases of the program over the phone and gave me a rundown of what my day-to-day would look like at La Jolla Recovery. When I arrived to San Diego I was greeted by a women, Michelle, who worked at La Jolla Recovery and was also in Recovery from addiction herself. I remember feeling so relieved and hopeful that I too would be able to recover and take back control of my life. I was set up with a case manager, William, who was there to help me set and achieve goals during my stay. All of the counselors that lead groups are absolutely amazing, especially mine, Ashely. I was able to develop trust with them and work on myself during group therapy and in individual sessions which I attended weekly. The program is set up to get you into a safe environment where healing can start. As you phase up in the program you get more freedom. I was able to attend regular 12-step meetings where I built a fellowship of other recovering people. We also went on several outings and I learned that I didn't need drugs and alcohol to have a good time. There's so much more to life. We went to concerts, had barbecues and went to the beach. I enjoyed football and baseball games, surfing and snorkeling. They took us to the gym, to the movies, and to local events that we're going on in San Diego. I also did yoga, trauma therapy, art therapy, and music therapy. I cannot stress enough how amazing the staff is here! Almost everyone who works here is in recovery themselves and is truly here to help and inspire people including the owner who is hands on and makes himself available. As I phased up in the program I was able to gain a lot of things I had lost back such as my driver's license, a car, and a job. I also gained a better relationship with my family, a network people that want to help me succeed and an understanding of myself. I got back my sanity, self respect and my love for life. The support I recieved from my case manager, therapist and the BHT staff played a major role in my success. Today I have just over all year clean and I will be forever grateful to La Jolla Recovery. I feel so blessed to have found this treatment center. It's been my first and last treatment ever and I have continued to stay sober since 1/23/20 because of how caring staff is there. I just want to thank ASHLEY for sticking with me thru it helping me with her continuous words of wisdom and actually caring. Every time I felt like isolating or was "going thru it" her intuition would see that in me and jump in which really really helped a lot to have someone like that. La Jolla recovery works! La Jolla Recovery reminds me a little bit of addiction itself, a wolf in sheep's clothing. They promise many things, like helping you get a job, a case by case treatment based on your needs as a client, a house with a proper diet, and staff that truly care. But in reality you get there and half of the amenities are broken or downright filthy, they leave it up to you to find your own job after they're done leeching your insurance with intense detox and php, they finally send you to the phase two house, which is nice on the outside but filthy on the inside, they force the clients to clean only when there is a tour so they can sell it. The groups there are redundant, and material is repeated on a weekly basis. All the food in the house is frozen microwaveable garbage with the occasional bag of celery. When I had stayed there to detox and get healthy, I figured it was time to move on, and to be courteous of the situation, I tried to let them know ahead of time... and they kicked me out in an hour and put me on a street corner. I wasn't able to go to the new facility (boardwalk recovery check it out it's much better and cheaper.) until Monday, and they booted me on a Saturday. Thank god I have a place to stay today until I get to boardwalk on Monday because the owner of healthy life Ryan Witt helped me stay at a sober living over the weekend and is helping get to boardwalk which is not his program out of the kindness of his heart and not his wallet, which is something you'll never see LJR's owner Danny do. But all in all, they just care about that paper. Only go here if you wanna get caught in a cycle of relapse and debt. 0 out of 5 stars. read more

After a relapse I desperately needed a place to detox. La Jolla Recovery was very helpful, and patient with me when it came to getting me a bed. Ashley Maloney, and all of the other staff, were amazing and beyond accommodating. Getting through intake was easy and painless and I could tell the staff really cares about the people they have in the house. La Jolla Recovery provided what I needed to nip my slip in the butt before it got out of hand. They made sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed to get through detox. The house is beautiful and they cooked me some great meals too! Thank you for your help Ashley. I will highly recommend La Jolla Recovery to anyone who needs to get the help I was given to get my life back on track. I haven't been in dozens of sober living homes before but I have taken a tour of a few and I can easily say that La Jolla Recovery was by far one of the cleanest. Sure others may have been a bit fancier but that doesn't necessarily mean they would have provided a better living situation. The Pacifica Retreat home not only boasts incredible views from the backyard, includes a swimming pool, nicely furnished living quarters, but also is centrally located in La Jolla, California. I mean, where else could you want to live no matter what your current situation. I highly recommend the Pacifica Retreat to anybody considering a sober living home in California. read more

Danny is a great guy....there will always be complaints about too much meds and cell phone restrictions but that's the nature of the business this is a solid place to get physically separated from whatever substance you used and get introduced to AA it's your responsibility to go to meetings! no recovery house can keep you sober...only AA in my experience I also found the one on one sessions with especially with Michelle (not sure if she still is there) were very helpful read more

Ashley and the staff helped facilitate my needs to get my outside business in order so I hold focus on myself. The accommodations are great and the staff is friendly and always willing to help or give a good ear to listen. The program is designed to help you ease back in to life with a new way of thinking. I am in the Refresh program and it has been working great. The groups are organic and focused on dealing with life's challenges n a productive way. I was in search of a long term, comprehensive treatment program in San Diego for my daughter. After reviewing over 200 of them and speaking with more than 25, I chose La Jolla Recovery for several reasons. The structure, group content, and qualified licensed on-staff professionals offered here is far superior to all others in the county. After several conversations with Daniel, it became apparent that he and his staff actually really care about the rehab and recovery of our loved ones in need. This man went over and above what could have ever been expected to assist in getting my daughter there through the road blocks of the court and probation. Unfortunately, with attorney representation and Daniel's assistance, my daughter was court ordered to a program which is contracted with probation and the county. I would highly recommend La Jolla Recovery for anyone seeking a comprehensive program with staff who truly cares about your successful recovery. On my desperate search to find somewhere that would help me out the staff that got me all started were so welcoming and understanding and gentle which is what I really needed the most at the time because I was very afraid to trust any center at all. I felt comfortable from the start, enough to come in to find out that the rest of the staff are just as welcoming and kind and compassionate but also able to tell me like it is when I need to hear it and to be confronted with the harsh reality of what I'm choosing when I'm choosing not to get my life together. I feel truly lucky to have met all the individuals there and feel like they all genuinely and truly cared about getting what I needed to get my life back on track. The entire staff was genuine and leaving was truly bittersweet but La Jolla Recovery really got me what I needed and I'm so thankful. read more

When you come here you will be upset with this place after the first month Danny isn't very helpful. all they care about is the insurance money they will run your insurance until it is all gone and when it is, they will kick you out and you won't even see it coming. La Jolla Recovery was a great treatment facility that not only got me clean and sober but also let me transition back into life. I've been through a few different rehabs before and was able to experience recovery from different perspectives in San Diego. La Jolla Recovery's way of sobriety was FUN to me. I was able to have the freedom I needed as an adult but also the direction I needed to help get me back on my feet again. The location of the facility was perfect for someone like me who enjoys surfing and the beach atmosphere which I enjoy and think is very spiritual and beneficial towards my recovery. The facility and homes are very very nice. They are up to date and furnished nicely. Having a clean and up to date furnished house to live in is a big part for me as I'm getting sober and trying to stay clean not only from drugs but also live as a normal, clean, and healthy Individual. The gym was very great to have available that had all the equipment I needed for an avid weight lifter and physical person. The staff was great not only at teaching me things about my mind and how it works that cause me to think the way I do, but also I was able to speak what was on my mind and personal information that I felt safe to do so. I can say they make the groups fun and enjoyable as possible. The tools I took from there I still use today to stay clean. La Jolla recovery was there for me when i was struggling with my addiction. They took me in right away when i had no where else to go. They took me to all my court dates and helped me walk through all the damage i created in my addiction. I don't know what i would have done without their help. read more

This is my first out of state rehabilitation program. At 1st before I got here I was under the assumption it would be the typical treatment center. Being I've been to like 6, lol. An just assumed I'd be living in a nicer house. Well I was wrong. The staff is very Informative. They have a wide scope of counselor's. I've learned several meditation technics, from multiple councilors, & I was able to experience trama therapy. Twice a week we go on outings, to experiencing life sober, as a group. Which included, boat rides, beach visits, movies, gym, tour guiding, etc. I find they focus alot on addressing the fact that bad things are gonna happen in life, an we don't have to use to get threw them. The A.A. and N.A. community is the most spectacular I've ever seen. They helped me find local AA & na meetings around my home town as well. It was just such a blessing to have the opportunity to come get treatment here. Going home and continuing my life is much easier now that I have the right tools. read more

Last year my son lived at Lajolla Recovery for some time. The people there were so companionate especially the owner Dan and Marie a woman working in the iop. They were a true family unit. They make you accountable for your own actions and try to teach basic life skills. Anytime I texted Danny he immediately got back to me, which is most defiantly not always the case elsewhere. Unfortunately my son chose to leave there and do drugs and still they went out looking for him to try and give him the help he so desperately needed. Unfortunately my son overdosed and was in a local hospital and Marie took the time out to visit and sit with him. My son is no longer with LaJolla Recovery , no fault of the place. We chose to bring him closer to home. This epidemic is extremely scary and Danny and his staff will help the family and communicate with you.
