La Jolla Tide Pools is a must visit when in the area of La Jolla. Parking may be a challenge especially on weekends with crowds of tourists. Accessible down a flight of stairs, note there a few stairs but the wooden stairs are safer. The other stairs has uneven steps and the hand rail isn't securely fixed :( The best time to visit is when it's low tide, meaning the waves crash into the shore from a distant thereby allowing people to do more adventurous explorations. You can discover, learn and appreciate sea-life flora and fauna. So far, the maintenance crews and visitors and have done a great job keeping the area clean. La Jolla Cove's population of sea lions have not moved down to the tide pools area, so the area has an ocean air freshness. I got the chance to take the family down to the La Jolla tide pools. It was absolutely beautiful! On this particular day the tide was extremely low so we were able to see all kinds of little sea critters. Little crabs everywhere if you get the chance and wanna do something free this is absolutely something to put in the list. Would recommend going down when the tide is at its lowest point so you can see things like this. Just a reminder these sea critters are in-fact loving and very much at home so please be mindful of that and don't remove them from home. La Jolla is so beautiful! It is so fun to make a family affair of visiting the tide pools! Low tide exposes such beautiful sea life! You can find and see sea urchins, star fish, crabs & yes even octopuses! Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, it is easy to slip on the slippery rocks. One of my favorite places to go hang out and chill. The tide pools are so cool when the tide is low, so many sea creatures going about their life in the tide pools. The tide pools are cool to walk through. The anemone here are smaller than their Mexican relatives, maybe because people are poking them so much. There are also these humongous sea weed things that look like serpents. My kids were spooked. Great thing to give out on Halloween. read more

Having grown up in SD, the tidepools were a regular year round visit with my family and friends. We'd go with my folks to check out sea anemones, sea cucumbers, crabs and even fish in the shallow pockets of water. This morning I went to go reminisce, but was met with signs stating the area was closed to humans. Unfortunately, the sea lion population has changed the landscape of the area, and they've moved over here. It was hard to find articles online exactly when this happened, since I haven't ventured here in years, but alas here we are. It's a great place to see sea lions and seals now, but I figured that would be at the Children's Pool. My husband and I took a quick trip out to San Diego in early April. We decided to stop by La Jolla Tide Pools during our visit on a Thursday mid-morning. Parking was relatively difficult, but we were able to find one, parallel parking, near the La Jolla Tide Pools. It was slightly cloud and around 58 degrees while visiting the Tide Pools. Luckily, we had our jackets and hats. There are a few stair steps you can go down to get to the beach area, but there are a myriad of rocky cliffs that you can climb down. La Jolla Cove was amazing. We saw so many Sea Lions, and a surprise, there was a historic event of 100s of Pelicans there when we visited! It was beautiful. Climbing on some of the rocks with the ride pool, you can see a lot of sea anemones and crabs living in them. Some of the rocks are covered with the sea anemones, so much sure to wear some close-toe shoes with a good grip! We had so much fun and was one of the best parts of our trip at San Diego! read more

There are many rock channels where the waves come it. Sometimes the water can recede very far. You don't need water shoes but wear non-slipper shoes or go barefoot. I found a spot pretty close on a Sunday, and there's some nice entrances to get down to the beach. It was relaxing to walk around and hear the ocean. I loved spotting sea life! It was so fun. The place was quite crowded on a Saturday afternoon; moreover, there were scores of annoying pop-up food and other commercial sands not far from the shore. Nonetheless, all the human activity didn't make a dent in all the pleasure that we got from watching the other species. If you're in town, make sure to check out the tide pools! The black and green mossy areas of rock are slick like skis. Careful to step only on the top of the rocks when you get to the pools to preserve the tiny ecosystems and leave no trace. Remember tide pools are best when the tide is going out or low. Check La Jolla tide chart prior to visiting this one of a kind destination. Water is crystal clear and cold. Lots to see! No public restrooms! Walked and drove miles to no avail. I guess you have to drive to town and find a coffee shop who's OVER USED restrooms are in working order. My 5 year old granddaughter was frantic. Terrible planning for La Jolla. read more

This is not a business but is located at the south end of La Jolla shores beach. This beach is well south of the pier. Check the tide charts for low tide. There wasn't a lot of difference in the exposed pools in the last two hours before mid day low tide. You can park in the beach parking lot if you can find a space. This is a really nice sand beach with several kayak liveries, snack bars and restrooms. It was scenic but the water had lots of seaweed that washed up on the beach. It was interesting to see the color of the sand in full sun. It was almost gold or iridescent due to the amount of crushed shell in the sand. Lots of tiny shells down the Bach near the tidal pools. Wear good shoes to walk out into the tidal pool area. You could go barefoot but unless you like rocky waters with pointy crustaceans on the rocks I would not advise it. We saw seals in the water. Lots of gulls in the area. Lots of people on the beach. Lots of people in the water although the water temperature was about 59 degrees F. The swimmers and boaters were mostly in wet suits. Visibility under water today was about 20 feet according to the sign we saw. They do have concessions, restrooms and showers. There are several hotels with beach frontage. We didn't see any surfers but lots of paddle boards and kayaks. As far as wildlife in the pools we says lots of tiny crabs. I saw some pods for what looked like anemones but they all seemed to have crabs in them. Their was food service and rental shops about two blocks off the beach. read more
