This was my go to place when I had to satisfy my craving for churros and don't have a lot of time (because if I had a lot of time I'd go to Las Flores, which for me has the best churros in Manila) I used to line up in Rockwell just to order the classic churros with the very rich and thick chocolate dip. The churros are good, cooked just right and with a good amount of sugar (adds texture to it) and the chocolate dip is to die for, it's everything a chocolate dip should be. Rich, creamy and tasty. The smallest order at that time was 6 churros which is too much for me, 2-3 pieces are more than enough. I've noticed though that their service and quality has gone down. I ordered a Nutella Churro in Serendra and the staff took their sweet time (I was the only customer) 15-20 minutes later I get my churro only to find out that the supposed Nutella stuffed churro only had Nutella on both ends, the middle part was empty. I have also ordered from their UP Town Mall branch and the chocolate did not seem to taste as good as it used to. The up side is, they finally made a smaller portion, you can now order just 3 churros instead of 6. I've always had memories of my grandfather having fondness for churros. I think it's because of that that to me, churros isn't just something I eat, but it's something I experience. Thankfully, La Lola Churreria is brought to us by the same creative and discerning men behind Las Flores and Rambla. We were surely very lucky to have gotten there right on time as there was no longer a line and our order was the last one accepted before they closed for the night. All members of the staff looked like they were fighting exhaustion, but they still served us pretty well. We got the basic churros with the chocolate dip on the side. While I was imagining getting a cup of thick chocolate for the churros, I realized after several bites and dips that it actually works out well that the chocolate isn't too thick. This is mostly because the dip doesn't overpower the texture and the taste of the churros itself. Simply put, the chocolate dip only enhances and complements the churros rather than the other way around. Several visits after, I decided to try thier Xuxos - churros stuffed with options such as nutella, dulce de leche, strawberry and peanut butter. I got the dulce de leche stuffing and was pleased that, just like the chocolate dip, the dulce de leche filling complements the churros. Despite the filling, the churros remained crunchy and warm. One of the best things about churros is the feeling that you can have it in the morning, afternoon, and all the hours in between. Now that La Lola Churreria has become a huge hit, throngs of foodies are flocking there to get a taste of their heavenly (and upsized!) version of the Spanish classic dessert. Golden to a crisp and dusted with copious amounts of sugar, La Lola's churros are often fresh and piping hot because they are made on the spot. La Lola makes no secret of this. There's a machine right in front of you squeezing the dough into a frying vat, just in case you forget while you're eating halfway through heaven that churros are deep-fried in oil. The chocolate dip is the right level of bittersweet, just the way I like it. Getting a box of churros with the same size of chocolate dip is good if you take shallow dips and large bites. But if you're like me and you like to dunk your churros in chocolate like you're in an Oreo commercial, then getting dip the same size as your churros might not be enough. Two of my friends and I ordered the large box of churros (P195), with the large chocolate dip (P100), and we ran out of chocolate by the tenth churro. Cue sad girly tears. Overall, I love that La Lola's churros have a clearly audible crunch when you bite into them, which is more than what can be said for the homemade churros I've tried to make in the past. When one food fad dies, another one takes it place. This time, said food fad would be churros. Churros are pretty straightforward - flour, sugar, oil and salt dipped in chocolate. The chocolate they used is imported from Belgium and is of good quality - Callebaut if I'm not mistaken. The churros themselves were alright. I can't say they were fantastic. Personally, I much prefer Alqueria's churros. Why? Consistency is more dense. It feels less oily and more dough-y. You don't get umay very fast. The best thing La Lola is their packaging. They have the giant triangula containers with cool graphics. What good marketing, a good location and a lot of hype can do. It can bring brands from mediocrity to greatness. read more

First tried La Lola at SM Aura and I understood why people swarmed it during its few first months of operation. Lovely golden ridges leave all sides perfectly crisp with the center a bit doughy. Maybe 1/4 of it is chewiness from kneaded flour and what remains is that beautiful deep fried goodness. You'd also taste hint of olive oil which gives it a denser profile. Sinking your teeth into in just feels right, it's not fried to a hard crunch. However, yesterday at Power Plant Mall, we were given a slightly overdone batch. You can easily smell how burnt it was. It could be that in their vat of frying oil they had charred bits or could've been left to cook longer. The rich chocolate dip sort of masked it but hope they can produce consistent churros every time. And it wouldn't hurt if their crew smiled more. :) read more

One of my favorite childhood memories is that of having churros for merienda at Dulcinea. Sadly, over the years, Dulcinea's quality deteriorated and we stopped going there all together. The good thing with La Lola is that they let you choose how much chocolate you'd like to have with your churros. Sizes range from medium to xtra large. For the 6pcs of churros, the medium is enough. but if you're like me and like to slurp the extra chocolate, by all means get the bigger sizes! if you're trying the churros for the first time, I recommend that you share the order with a friend. I honestly do not understand what this churros craze is all about. I thought I would understand it after tasting it, so I ordered the medium churros with chocolate. The plus factor on La Lola's is probably that the churros are cooked/fried in olive oil, which is known to be a much healthier oil. Unfortunately, I still did not understand after eating it. Here's why: 1. I don't understand why the churros and the sauce (normally chocolate) have to be sold separately. In Spain, it is churros con chocolate, meaning it really goes together. 2. Churros is like the Chinese Bicho. In Chinese, it's called You Tiao, or literally means "oil stick". It's like a doughnut...dough that is fried. Well, maybe it's comfort food? 3. La Lola's version is fried till very crispy. I can hardly chew on any "dough", it's like eating chicharon. Totally different from the ones I've tried in Barcelona. 4. The dough sucked in all the oil, and therefore was really satiating. I think I became tired of eating it after the 1st stick. I think there was always a silent, suffering, unattended yearning for churros in Manila. You could be in the mood for crispy, deep-fried dough, dipped in super rich hot chocolate, and wouldn't know where to go. When it first came out last year 2014 everyone was raving to take dip and bite into this golden strip of goodness. Because it indeed is true. My family loves sweets! And we definitely love churros! I have to be honest, for the longest time, Dulcinea was pretty much a monopoly when it came to good churros here in Manila. But La Lola surely takes the top spot now. There's just something about those long crunchypieces served in those large inverted pyramids/cones. Did you know that you can insert them into the holes of the tables so that they just stand there?! What's better is that they have a little cup holder cut-out on the cone so that you can place your cup of hot chocolate! It also makes it easier to walk around and have a free hand to dip and bite! They aren't making anything fancy but they are doing something perfectly and that makes all the difference. Serving it in those cardboard containers with a holder for your cup of chocolate for dipping is perfect and well thought of which makes it easy to eat for those that are on-the-go and for sharing in groups.
