A family friend brought a beautiful box of Mexican sweet bread and I was instantly curios! Never seen detail taken to a nice presentation so naturally the taste test came next -- amazing! I had to go. La Mascota is a star in your map of best panaderías in LA, and it's also a restaurant! With friendly service, the space invites you to slow down from your busy day and enjoy time to eat, drink un cafecito, and enjoy. Ample parking in the back and plenty of space in or out for dining.

La Mascota Bakery at 2715 Whittier Blvd is another top spot, known for authentic tamales with great seasoning in their masa and traditional beef versions. They also offer a variety of other Mexican baked goods and have a loyal local following.[lataco +2] we tried to leave Tamales they look good. This is our first time here so we were just trying to see what we thought taste good.!

I liked the interior of the place. It's quiet and spacious enough to enjoy your meal. The layout of everything is nicely organized. The service was friendly and very helpful. FOOD: The blue/white concha i bought was 2x the cost of what it normally pay at another panaderia. The concha itself was very soft yet held it's structure with every bite. Here's why the 4 stars... The tamale inside a bollilo was unfairly dry, incredibly lacked red sauce and could have included more pork in it. The bollilo itself was standard. It does come included with a cafe de olla so that's going to help with how fairly dry it was. They have other items on the menu that I look forward to trying. I'll come back and try something else.

While visiting my relatives in Los Angeles for the holidays, my brother-in-law's good buddy suggested getting tamales and Mexican pastries from Boyle Heights's La Mascota Bakery. I had never heard of La Mascota Bakery. Still, we were assured that this 65-year-old plus East LA bakery was renowned for its tamales, tortas (sandwiches), Hispanic pastries (pan dulce), barista-pulled espressos, lattes, and drip coffees. We arrived at the bakery around 10:30 AM, and there was a line out the door. Luckily, we snagged the last parking stall in La Mascota's parking lot. I wandered into the bakery to look at their menu and mouthwatering assorted pastries and cookies while the rest of my family stood in line. The line moved quickly, and we noticed that most of the customers behind us spoke Spanish. Luckily, my brother-in-law's friend speaks Spanish, so I could only point to the items that caught my eye as he translated my selections to the bakery worker. Our order consisted of a dozen tamales (four each of pork, chicken, and beef), assorted conchas, and various cookies. The counter help packed all of the steaming hot tamales in a plastic bag but didn't separate them, as the outer wrappers were labeled with their tamale filling. The service was friendly and efficient because at least four ladies worked at the bakery counter. That evening, we re-steamed the tamales and ate them with salsa roja and crema. The generous fillings were encased in an evenly layered and thin masa, or tamale dough, which made us appreciate their authenticity more than those we have gotten from some Mexican restaurants or stores in Honolulu. Because the tamale dough wasn't thick or heavy, we ate three tamales apiece and finished our dinner with delicious buttery and nutty Mexican wedding cookies.

The amount of meat in a red chile and pork tamale

I thought I had reviewed this place years ago but upon going through my reviews, it appears I failed to provide a review. If you have ever read any of my other tamale reviews, you know I always give props to this place as being my go to spot for tamales. Well, we've encountered what I thought was merely a one time snag but it appears to now be a quality control issue. Last year I noticed my tamales were missing the meat despite having ordered red chili pork tamales. By missing I mean all I got was a tiny little piece of meat at one end of the tamale as pictured (and evidenced by the video). I attributed that to perhaps the holiday rush. Fast forward to this year where so far I have had three of what were supposed to be red chili pork tamales but should probably be renamed "red chili tamales" and all three had the same quality control issue - no meat! I know the cost of everything has gone up but this is unacceptable. So, beware if you buy from here because it looks like the pork tamales have taken somewhat of a vegan approach by failing to include the meat. Mascota, I'm waiting for you to make this right for me....

Hidden little gem! Food was delicious. I went during working hours and it was packed. Staff was nice and helpful. Found a new spot to eat for sure!

My husband and I were in the neighborhood and stopped by on a whim for lunch. We ordered the two tamale chicken plate and torta de puerco (Pork sandwich). The portions were generous and the food was delicious! The agave tea was exotic and sweet as a mojito! Highly recommend this place.

The conchas! The conchas! Unreal! Highly recommend them and the Cajeta Rolls. Went in and got about two dozen of their pan dulces. By far one of the best panaderias we've been too. If you show up on the weekend, there might be a bit of a line... Well worth the wait!! I don't really know the names of the panes we picked but check out the pictures. We also had a Cafe De Oya, the bread and that coffee make a great combination. We were also getting pushed towards the tamales but there was only so much we could get... Next time we will for sure get a few, we heard very good reviews from the folks that were at the location on that day. The ambience was really authentic. The place has a good vibe.

Mr P and his family have been ordering holiday tamales from La Mascota for decades. On Thanksgiving, I got to try them, and was hooked! Though the neighborhood is kind of shady, we took a drive where he could show me where these delicious cáscaras are made. The staff was friendly and the cafe/shop buzzing. Those who ordered to go still managed to linger a bit and grab a chair...we included. The sweet tamales were the perfect consistency, holding a sweetness that didn't overpower the caramelized piña. The pan dulces and warm tortillas were flavorful and we're a good size for the money. I highly recommend La Mascota for posters, pan dulce, tamales and more! Just don't forget to call your tamale orders in ahead of time, lest you be disappointed.

Ask the Community - La Mascota Bakery

    Are your tamales gluten free?

Well tamales are made with corn masa and lard so I believe that will make it glutten free

Do they use lard in their tamales?

Is there anyway of still ordering tamales?

I have gone as late as Christmas Eve, granted it was at 5am, but got all that I wanted. Go to their website and order.

Can anybody confirm that the veggie tamales are actually vegan? I asked an employee there and he said they use lard in them.

What kind of sauce I'm in the cheese tamale? Tomato? Gotta make sure my pickies aren't allergic

    Are the veggie tamales vegan?

Yes, per owner the veggie tamales are vegan. She does not use lard as an ingredient for these tamales.

Are the veggies in banana leaf tamales vegan?

Yes, no lard used for this one and the corn tamal. I had the chance to ask the owner.

    Do they sell capirotada here?

yes, LaMascota does offer (bread pudding) traditional capirotada, it is listed on the menu when you walk in.

How much for a dozen of tamales?

Don't quote me, but I believe they are $22 a dozen. Most tamales by the dozen in this particular area sell for about the same price or just a few cents less. Worth the price though. Order now if you are thinking about Christmas... they get packed!

Do they sell their tamale masa?!

    I don't know.

The drinks and pastries have always made it an easy place for us to grab a treat, so I'm not writing this based on one random first impression. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing enough that I felt I needed to say something. When we came in, the trash cans were overflowing, and the floor looked like it had not been cleaned in quite some time. I understand that cafés can get very busy, especially in Little Tokyo, and I never expect a place to look perfect every second of the day. However, the dining area felt noticeably neglected. With two children, cleanliness is something I pay closer attention to, and it was uncomfortable trying to find a clean area for us to stand and sit. The overall atmosphere also felt disorganized. We waited at the register for help, but it took a while before anyone acknowledged us. A simple "I'll be right with you" would have made a big difference. I have had better experiences here in the past, which is why this visit stood out so much. I'm hoping this was simply a bad day, because Café Dulce has always been a place I was happy to visit with my family. I'm sharing this because I would genuinely like to see the cleanliness and customer service return to the standard I remember. Private Feedback for Management I did not feel comfortable putting the full details of this experience in a public review, but I believe management needs to be aware of what happened. While I was standing at the register waiting to order, the male employee working there was engaged in a conversation with another person and appeared to be openly gloating about drinking while on the job. Based on what I heard and observed, he also appeared to be impaired or intoxicated. He continued the conversation while ignoring me, even though I was standing directly in front of the register waiting to place an order. The tone of the conversation was not subtle or professional. It created a much darker and more uncomfortable atmosphere than what I would ever expect from a family-friendly café. I was there with my two children, and hearing someone behind the register casually talking about drinking while working was deeply concerning. Someone who appears intoxicated while operating a register and handling customers' money creates a terrible narrative for the business. It raises concerns about judgment, accuracy with transactions, food-service safety, and the overall professionalism of the workplace. Even if the employee was exaggerating or joking, it was still completely inappropriate to have that conversation openly in front of customers. What bothered me most was not only the conversation, but the fact that I was being ignored while it continued. I was waiting to spend money at the business, yet the employee seemed more interested in talking about drinking than acknowledging a customer. As a mother standing there with two children, the situation felt uncomfortable, disrespectful, and honestly a little disturbing. This is not my first time visiting Café Dulce, and I have never felt compelled to complain before. I understand that employees are human and that businesses have difficult days. However, the combination of overflowing trash cans, a dirty floor, being ignored at the register, and an employee appearing impaired while discussing drinking on the job crossed a line for me. I am sharing this privately because I believe management should have the opportunity to address it directly. I hope the situation is taken seriously, not only for the reputation of the café, but for the safety and comfort of the customers and employees.

A small piece goes a long way, making them perfect for savoring over a couple of days (if you have that much self-control!). They're also very on-trend, whenever a Korean dessert goes viral, they usually have it here. Recently, they even started selling butter tteok, and I heard it was one of the first places to have it in K-town. I highly recommend the salted bread. Honestly, I think it's even better than the famous spot everyone talks about. My favorite is the corn cheese, it's especially delicious when it's warm. I also tried the Korean chamoe (melon) smoothie, and it was very refreshing. It tasted like they used real melon, since there was a slight natural tanginess that made it even better. There is free parking, though the lot is a bit small. They also have both indoor and outdoor seating, but the seating area is somewhat limited too

I got a sausage bbang, a chocopie, and a dalgona latte. The sausage bbang was soggy on the bottom and honestly tasted like it was from the day before. The chocopie barely had any filling, just a thin layer of marshmallow and jam. It honestly felt like they used most of the marshmallow for their Dubai choco cookie because it's probably more profitable, instead of properly filling the chocopie. If that's the case, it's better not to sell it at all than serve something like that. The dalgona latte was also disappointing. With ice, the drink only filled to the bottom third line of the cup marking. Clearly, they skimped on the milk. There was also a weird moment when I paid. My total was $15.25 and I paid cash, but I was given $4.75 in change. When I said it should be $5, she seemed confused and asked what I meant. I told her I literally gave you a quarter right now, and she questioned it before eventually giving me the correct change. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume it was a mistake. I understand times are hard, but charging more for products that clearly had corners cut doesn't sit right with me. It just comes across like there's no integrity. Clearly the quality and portions are going downhill. I wasn't even planning on writing this review. I was going to stay quiet, but the chocopie really ticked me off. I'm not going to pay for food that skims on ingredients and shortchanges customers by charging more for less, so this will be my last visit.

And I know that vanilla cupcakes with buttercream frosting is pretty easy to make, but sometimes I'd rather just buy baked goods than make them for myself, especially when I'm driving past what I thought was a popular (and presumably good) bake shop. I expected a high-quality cupcake. The cupcakes looked cute, but they were as dry as the Sahara. They should have been labeled as white cupcakes as I didn't detect any vanilla in them. I suspect that the "buttercream" was made with milk and margarine and powdered sugar.....so much powdered sugar. It was sickeningly sweet, and it was dry too. And a true bettercream doesn't even use powdered sugar. So not only were the cupcakes terrible, they were not even what they purported to be. This is like calling a cut of meat a filet mignon and serving a hamburger. Von's, Ralphs and Albertson's make better cupcakes than this for a fraction of othe price.
