Had to try a mezcaleria before leaving Oaxaca... La Mezcalerita was one of our bartender's recommendations, conveniently located near our Airbnb. We walked in about an hour before close, and the bar was as lively as ever. While downstairs had more of a lounge vibe, the rooftop bar was buzzing with locals and loud music. Overall a bit grubby, but nothing unexpected of a typical dive bar. Staff are a bit brusque but well-intentioned. PULQUE: I could only dream that this was more popular in the US. Sweet, almost fruity, and smooth. Almost like a light, pulpy, alcoholic orange juice. New to pulque, but this was a delicious and great start. Impressively vast selection of craft beers, wines, and liquor. You're bound to find something for everyone. read more

This centrally located bar has become the meeting place for most of my friends. Minutes from the Zocalo, minutes from Barrio Xochimilco, it's quickly becoming my local place. I started with a tasting of 5 mezcals. Verde by far is my favorite. I also asked the waiter to surprise me with a cocktail with Mezcal Verde. It came with a popsicle. Mission accomplished! On my most recent visit we all had the Mezcal Margarita which may have spoiled me for all other margaritas in the future. There is something about the smokiness that meshes with the sweet tart of the margarita mix that just sings. Check out the rooftop bar to pass the time in style with good friends. read more

Mezcal and Munchies This is, kinda, your prototypical Oaxacan mezcaleria. They have an impressive selection of mezcal, including a healthy selection of their own product all of it very very good. You've got folks who are happy to either leave you to your own devices, help you just enough for you to hurt yourself, or spend hours chatting with you about the specifics of the mezcal you're drinking, their own favorites, and whatnot. There's also mezcal-appropriate food, i.e., nothing fancy, but all of it designed to help cut the alcohol (oh those fries!). There's also a roof-top which can get crowded, and the small high-top tables indoors perfect to just spend a few hours of the crazy afternoon heat. In short, well worth going to! read more

If I were a native Oaxacan, I am guessing this would be my permanent hangout with friends. That said, during my one week stay in Oaxaca, I came here twice, once with traveling friends from Canada and New Zealand and once on my own. Whether you're a solo traveler getting an afternoon drink while journaling or if you're visiting La Mezcalerita for a nightcap with friends, it is definitely a place to visit. La Mezcalerita was the best place I found in Oaxaca City to try a variety of local craft beers. Of course, if you're hoping to enjoy more "authentic" Oaxaca culture, you can definitely sip on a shot glass of Mezcal instead. If you're lucky, local musicians will play on the rooftop during opening hours. Please tip. Whether it's 5, 10, or more pesos, let the musician know how much you appreciate the artistry she brings to the place. Enjoy! Came here with my 2 travel companions prior to heading back to our hotel room as we were feeling a wee bit peckish and figured we could also use a nightcap or two. We sat on the roof, which had a great assortment of mismatched tables, benches, couches, and chairs to sit at. (Note: we had to go up a couple of flights of narrow rickety stairs, so those with a fear of heights may have to be cautious as to not look down when climbing up these stairs). We opted for a tiny oil-cloth covered table with stools. Our server was very friendly and we were surprised to see their list of craft beers and local mezcals/tequilas and even pulques. I opted for a cocktail made out of macerated berries, seltzer, and vodka, which regrettably sounded better than it tasted. Think of cold syrup and imagine that mixed in with seltzer. So, why the 5 star rating? The atmosphere was great and was pretty much what I was hoping to find in Oaxaca. Also, my tlayuda and the dips that 1 of my friends had gotten to try out were amazing. Just a great experience, overall. Would absolutely come back, if I ever find myself in Oaxaca again. read more

Wandered here when the mezcaleria we were planning on going to wasn't yet open. We were hoping for a flight/mezcal tasting so we decided that we'd all order a different type and pass to the right. Turns out really only 1 of the gang even liked mezcal and it wasn't me so I can't comment on the quality of the mezcal. What I can say is that the food my peeps ordered looked amazing and the food I ordered was great. And best of all they had pulque! I got the curado with mango and I really really liked it. Highly recommend this spot if you're looking into a chill vibe, it's it located on a big street so it is easy to find. We really enjoyed their upstairs patio, our server had great mezcal knowledge. I'm not much of a mezcal drinker but she recommended something smooth and not too smoky which I really enjoyed. There was a musician as well which added onto the relaxing vibe. This should really be called beer artesnal, given variety of mexican craft beer they carry, 3 imperial stouts, a dubbel. Taste the free pulque at door, not my thing, too hoochy. Ok, back to mezcal, all of upscale real.minero mezcal line is carried by them, come here if you want to try those. They will if asked, do a taste of 1-2. Tasting mezcal, a general guide. I could not find bars with varied branded collection for tasting. So two options, goto a mezcal shop and if will allow you to get a taste and more if you are buying or goto a local mezcaleria that mezcal makers have a connection to carry their line. read more

They have an amazing mezcal selection and a cool atmosphere. We sat at the bar top on stools both times, but it looked like there was more seating inside. Most of the mezcal is 45-50 pesos for an ounce. However, there are some that are 150. If you want something smoother, I recommend the mezcal con nispero. I liked the pulque too. It was somewhat sour. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of mezcal, but this is a great place to try some. They are very different, so try a few. Also, remember to sip the mezcal. Don't take it like a shot. The big negative is the service. The servers and bartenders disappear for long periods of time, which is weird when you are trying to spend more money by ordering more. read more

We were drawn in by the gratis pulque but stayed for the mescal cocktails and selection. My husband and I both tried a different cocktail - Mescalini Maracuya and the Pinotepa. They were both tasty. The bartender was charming, helpful and attentive. We returned later for their Christmas dinner and sat on the roof. We ordered the Mescalini Maracuya and a shot each of the Nizabisahio Espadin and Madrecuixe. They were quality mescals. They didn't have heaters (that I saw) and we didn't dress for the chilly evening so we left soon after finishing our meal. read more

Seemed a bit touristy (maybe because The Killers were blasting through the stereo when we walked in?). Wonderful mezcal selection (somewhat pricy though considering you can get free shots at many of the mezcal vendors) and a good beer selection, but the pulque was underwhelming and tasted more like a sweetened agua fresca than a fermented agave drink. Not to mention that the amount of pulque received was 1/2 the amount at places like La Biznaga or Capuche. Food menu is fairly limited, but if it's late and you have a belly that needs feeding there are worse places to get overpriced nachos. read more

Entering the place as the only tourists that managed to jump the fence closing off the pedestrian area of alcala street, we were faced with a huge dilemma: artisanal mezcal or artesanal beer. We came for the first, but the second is so rare in Mexico it's hard to resist. Deciding to stick with the mezcal we sat ourselves at the bar and asked the girl behind it for guidance.
