I am a sucker for ice cream and have a weakness for it. I can eat it 24/7, and more importantly, I NEVER feel guilty. I am not sure if that's a good or bad thing. During my most recent visit, the outdoor temperature in my area was 103 degrees (like most areas), so this was my justification for loading up. I visited one of my favorite ice cream shops, La Michoacana. This shop is large, offers many of my favorite yogurt bars made with real fruit, has affordable prices, and the service from any of the employees is always top-notch. The overall atmosphere is cool and relaxed. Tip: When you buy five ice cream/yogurt bars of any flavor, you receive an extra bar for free. During my recent visit, I purchased one pistachio bar made with yogurt and pistachios, one walnut bar made with yogurt and walnuts, and my favorite of all, a yogurt bar with a slice of strawberry, kiwi, and mango. It's the best mango ice cream that I've ever tasted.... One scoop costs $4.99. Two scoops cost $6.99. La Michoacana (Covina) is hidden in a large dingy plaza. Yet, as you enter, you're transported to a friendly, attractive, Mexican ice cream parlor. The wide location is vibrant and very clean. Its tables are shiny, and it's well-ventilated. Bright Mexican music plays in the background. I arrived on a weekend (around 6:20pm) and it was packed with customers. Staff and customers happily chatted in Spanish. Staff is very helpful. The lady scooping the ice cream spoke English and Spanish. And the extremely friendly, cheerful lady at the register spoke primarily Spanish. The purchase went very smoothly. La Michoacana (Covina) is absolutely a secret gem. It's one of the best fruit ice cream locations in SGV. As mentioned prior, the mango ice cream is exceptionally good. If I'd eaten it at a Gordon Ramsey restaurant, I wouldn't have questioned it. Unfortunately, the strawberry fruit ice cream was less exceptional. I loved the soft, frozen, diced pieces of strawberries, but the strawberry ice cream had a very common (strawberry milk) taste. (Quick Tip: 50 cents extra cost for card. Bring cash.) I've come here once with my BFF, but my BFF has brought me paletas from here several times. When I was there, the employees were very nice and they were quick. The customers seem to be regulars because they seem to know what they want by ordering quickly and then leaving. The employees were all wearing masks and it's a requirement to wear one upon entering. The paletas I have from here are always good and at a good price. It's never too sweet. Very flavorful and can last for about a week or so. Make sure you wrap them in tin foil when you put them in the freezer. They have a lot of paleta choices. They also have ice cream too, but I did not try them. read more

There is a huge menu and you can see the various paletas through the glass. Most people were taking a minimum of six to go...because it is hard to decide which one you want to try. There is NO tasting the Paletas...but I don't think that is a bad thing...just jump in and get 3 AGUA and 3 LECHE. To your right ...are the containers of delicately blended natural fruit and other delicious add is. You can get a cone, cup, milk shake, or a huge fresh fruit concoction with chili, lime, . Same concept on the ice cream. One side is AGUA and next side is LECHE. So for all u lactose intolerant folks...no worries....you can still experience this mini exotic vacation. There are also Snacks you can order on this side. Spicy chips of various styles which open and pour other spicy elixirs and mix it all up..like a little hand held personal treat bag...with a fork or spoon. One of there more popular snacks is the ESQUITE... not sure what the name translates to...but what you will get is one of Los Angeles delicious "Mexican Corn". They literally cut off the kernels from the cob , then put in a cup and add anything from chili to cheese....yummy... comes in a small and large. The large looks huge! Hubby and I got two scoops each...don't judge ...we had a hard day . Hubby was thrilled with the "chicle" real chunks of bubble gum with delicious creaminess. I am more of an adventurer...I went for the Guava for one scoop and then the Queso for my second scoop (think rustic cream cheese/ cheese cake ). Both delicious.... so delicious....we came back NEXT DAY... hubby stuck to the Chicle...but I tried the Guanabana...(exotic sweet fruit ..looks almost like a prickly pear) and the Cajeta (had chunks of Maria's cookies in it...but to me not enough cajeta). Don't hesitate to ask to try as many flavors as you want. Staff is very helpful. I read a comment about some of the workers not smiling. All I can tell you is that this is not 31 flavors where staff are trained to be robots and smile big. These are hard working folks that are happy to serve you...and if they are not smiling big...it's probably because they are focusing on your ice cream and snacks and trying to work fast to get to the hungry folks at the end of the line. Prices, great!! For the quality and freshness....hubby and I had four scoops (I said don't judge) and were out a little over $6 ...YESSSS. The only reason I did not give 5 stars was because their air conditioner was not working. The place gets really packed so it can get warm while you wait in line. Have been to this location more than once and love it! It is never empty even during the cold winter days. They give good portions too! I have ordered one scoop of 1/2 pistachio and 1/2 Ferrero but it comes as a legit one scoop of each, but charged for just a single scoop. Another time I came and got a small mangoneada and it was super delicious! Just the right mix of chamoy and mangos! The avocado ice cream is good too, just not as sweet as the Filipinos make it.
