I've come here for a quick breakfast burrito, I've purchased fresh masa for tamales during the holidays, and I've ordered bulk food for a holiday work party. All times I've been very impressed. Their service is so quick. They have that place run like the military! They're so efficient. On top of the delicious food, I love buying their handmade tortillas and salsas in the fridges. It's a little hectic inside, so come prepared with your order and know where to stand haha. I want to highlight how great their catering was. I ordered over the phone and they were very clear about the pricing of everything. The total they provided over the phone was the same total when I picked up the food (not including tip of course). The food was perfect and ready at the exact time I said I needed it by. I picked it up and it was all packaged in boxes which made it very easy to transport, and mess free. I ordered beans, rice, meat, tortillas and tamales. Everyone at my work was so impressed with everything. I will absolutely order from them in the future. Can't believe I just found out about this spot! My bf and I love finding out spots that make their own tortillas and this was the spot! Hefty super burritos and handmade tacos and pupusas! Love their orange sauce, kinda had hints of carrot for their salsa. They sell other ingredients and condiments if doing your own taco bar at home, so this may be the spot for when we decide to do that. read more

Stopped by on a sunny Sunday afternoon and the place was doing BUSINESS. So many options so ordered a few different things to try. Soft tacos were our fave. Good tortilla to topping ratio, even with the double tortilla. I typically will only eat one but here the tortillas are too good to waste! The meats were super flavorful. Glad we tried the chile verde although too wet for taco. The al pastor and carne asada were winners. We also tried a carne asada handmade taco, which has a much fluffier thicker larger tortilla - loads more meat and beans but found the tortilla too thick for me. The huarache was similarly thick but filled with a little bean and topped with cabbage which I appreciated to lighten it up. The carnitas was kinda dry though and there wasn't enough salsa to even that out. Will need to return to try the crispy tacos, chicharrones, lengua, tamales, pupusas, burritos.. The final stop of a self guided Mission taqueria crawl brought us to La Palma for pupusas! Since I didn't do the planning and was just along for the ride, I was surprised to see that our last stop was both a market and taqueria/deli. We had fun looking around the market before ordering. I wished we didn't already have so many food plans coming up as I would've loved to stock up on all the goodies here. They had fresh salsa, homemade tortillas, meat, and other goods too, all of which looked delicious. We ended up ordering two pupusas here, one bean and cheese and one chicharon and cheese. By the time we made it to this stop we were beyond full and ended up taking them to go, which was perfect since there was nowhere to actually sit and eat here anyways! After out walk and drive home, we ended up trying the pupusas about 45 minutes later, so they weren't at their peak, but they were still very good! Even though I was extremely full, I did go in for a few more bites of the bean and cheese one because the beans were so damn good. The chicharon one was also good, but as a self proclaimed bean girl, the bean one stole the show for me. read more

My family and I ate at La Palma on April 4th. Some of us ordered pupusas while others ordered burritos, and I ordered the pork pupusas which I had enjoyed here before. Unfortunately, later that evening several members of my family who ate the pupusas became extremely sick with severe gastrointestinal symptoms consistent with food poisoning. Everyone who ate the pupusas got sick, while the family members who only ate burritos did not experience any symptoms, and the pupusas were the only food we all had in common that day. We ended up being sick through Easter Day and had to cancel our Easter plans because we felt so awful, which was really upsetting. I'm very disappointed because I used to like this restaurant, but after this experience I don't feel comfortable returning and hope the restaurant takes this feedback seriously and looks into their food safety practices read more

Came here with my family and grabbed a few items to eat. Had the crispy tacos and they were just alright. Refried beans were very thick and needs some liquid to make more creamier. Tried their pork tamales and those were the biggest disappointment. I would think since they sell masa for tamales that these would have been delicious - wrong super dry and actually quite hard to swallow. My wife and I stopped by La Palma Mexicatessen to pick up breakfast burritos for a picnic nearby at Dolores Park. We arrived around 9:30 a.m. on a Saturday and found only a few people ahead of us in line. The line moved quickly, and within 10 minutes, we were in and out with our food. Burritos here are on the pricier side--around $15 each--but they're absolutely massive. If you're not a big eater, one is easily enough for two to share. The breakfast burritos aren't all that different from their regular burritos, aside from the addition of eggs and chorizo; the other fillings remain the same. They do lean a bit on the watery side, likely due to the generous amount of beans. The real standout for me was the tortilla--super soft and clearly made in-house. If you're looking for a breakfast burrito option packed with eggs, no beans, and bacon or sausage as the main protein, this isn't the place. Their super burrito also smacks after walking around mission.. really want to try the pupusas next time. order at the back counter, pay at the register, then wait outside for your number to be called an establishment feeding the community with their grocery items in the front and hot food in the back. I always love the food at La Palma. And, for whatever reason, I never remember what I like to order, so every time I visit is like a new discovery. I'm writing this review mainly to memorialize how bomb the bean and cheese pupusa is. If you've felt in SF like it's hard to just find a good, small, bean and cheese burrito -- maybe everything is too big or there's rice added or whatever -- this is such a good substitute. They make their own tortillas, which are awesome, and then the interior has that perfect creamy, salty, warm blend of beans and cheese. There's so much other good stuff to order here including masa, tortillas, and salsa to go -- but as someone always craving that more SoCal-style bean and cheese burrito, this is probably the closest flavor / experience I've found in San Francisco. read more

Came here for the first time this week and really liked the supper breakfast burrito. I also picked up a pack of huaraches, which are pupusa-like, that I really liked, too. As their name implies it's more than a taqueria--they have packaged goods on sale and offer up bulk foods as well. The space is a bit crammed so not sure what it gets like during a lunch/dinner rush with a line. Since I was there mid morning, I was the only person ordering. Great place to come either for mexican food or groceries like tortillas, crema, spices, masa, etc. They make one of the best burritos in SF and probably top 3 for me and do a bunch of other mexican foods. Closed on Tuesdays so keep that in mind. Prices are reasonable and although there is sometimes a line I find it moves fast. Paid parking on the street during the day but you can usually find a spot if you are willing to walk a few blocks. Parking is free on some of the side roads but can be difficult to find an open spot. read more

So this is an odd review because I didn't love the stuff I got from the taqueria part, but I loved the chicharrones I bought. They have chicharrones that are skin + meat, fat + meat, or just meat, and it's all delicious. The burrito I got was too salty, and the carnitas had too much fat. Plus, the texture was inconsistent. I have ordered from La Palma for multiple events, both in my personal life and for professional events as well. The pachanga tray packages are always a lot of food and delicious. The last event I purchased a taco bar set with two types of meat (chicken, beef) and swapped out the Agua Fresca for a tray of rice. I also added a meat tray of pork and two orders of tamales (chicken and cheese). Although the description says feeds 25 people, the add ons allowed us to have enough food for 40-50 (adults and kids). And every time I order from La Palma, I always get a ton of compliments on the food. I highly recommend La Palma for catering parties and events. read more

Love this place. Best chicharron and great market items like salsas, tortillas, and tamales. My favorite hot items are the chicharron with meat and skin and the carnitas they have here. The Gordita's and tamales are amazing and will keep me coming back. The salsas I always love to get as well. The orange habanero is very hot, and the green salsas have great flavor. Most of the staff speaks Spanish, so I do my best to order with them. They are very nice and friendly. Outdoor seating available so you can eat there as well. Made trip across town to have a pupusa but they were sold out just before closing. I opted for burrito that was not prepared as ordered. The manager refunded me and was very nice saying she wanted to keep. Me as a customer. The veggies were raw, the tortilla was soggy not toasted on grill and not cut in half to share with a friend. I have been a big supporter of La Palma ever since arriving in the city. The food is delicious and from what I hear La Palma is a staple of La Mission!! I've always been happy with my visits here to eat. Today I have to say my experience was different. Having just read another post about their customer service here being bad...I can see I'm not the only one who has had a less than stellar experience!! I bought an order of tortillas and grabbed some chicharrónes. I needed a little something in my stomach since I was a bit hungry but I didn't want to overdue it as I'm not a big breakfast kinda person. I placed my order than waited for my food to be ready. Once I had my food, I asked the cashier person if I could have a side of salsa for the food I had just purchased. There was nothing out of the ordinary in my request but for some reason it was met with a sense of hostility. I was told that they don't provide salsa unless you buy a burrito. I said I made a food purchase and I just want some salsa on the side for it. She then tells me is a $1 for salsa. I had just spent over $10 on tortillas and chicharrónes...I asked you can't give me a side of salsa? She then responded by telling me it would be $0.50. So it went from $1 to now $0.50 none of it made sense but what did make sense was the additional charge they wanted to tax me on for a side of salsa. Now I get it, everything has a cost associated with it and I'm not mad at that at all...but come on!! The dollar charge or even if it was $0.50 cents for a side of salsa, with purchase I think that's a place where you shouldn't be such a stickler for it. That additional surcharge now will be the reason I don't spend my money there anymore. If you make salsa available for a burrito purchase, why not make it available with any food purchase? For me it's the principle of the matter. Your cashier girl could use better customer service training as well!! Every customer should be well received and not made to feel like we're an annoyance to her being on her phone!! Damn shame too given that I actually like coming here!! One word: Huaraches! All their other food items are delicious but the huaraches are a standout. I often can't resist tearing open a bag on my walk home and devouring one (or two) along the way. They come out bagged and piping hot and that is hands down the best time to eat them. The spinach/cheese and nopales are my two favorites, but I will buy which ever ones they have available at the time and I've never been disappointed. Friends in Cali request I bring some back with me whenever I can. I let them cool, then freeze them. Reheating them later in either a toaster oven (wrapped in foil) or skillet works well - - - still doesn't compare to tearing them apart as soon as I walk out of the store, but they are still delicious. read more

This place use to be my favorite spot in SF. However, things just went downhill from last year till now. What really stood out to me in the beginning was their portion size, flavor, and especially their signature salsa. I would basically go to this place once or even twice a month at one point because I didn't dare going to others because they didn't hit as much as La Palma. Although it had its great run, the recent months have been completely different. First, they started charging if you as for more tiny salsa containers which they only give you ONE per burrito/bag of chips. That isn't enough for me so i used to ask for one more because it is delicious. They used to give you it without any hesitation, but now they say oh no we charge for sauces now... I could live with paying for the sauce because it still had other qualities. Or so I thought, because when I went in this past week, I got a SUPER burrito, which I wanted to include everything when asked. What I received back was a LITERAL kid-sized burrito. This shocked me and my boyfriend because I have never seen such a small burrito in my life. It wasn't even just visually smaller but what really proved it to me was how I was able to finish the full burrito even though I NEVER usually do. In any burrito place, not just this one, I only can usually finish half because of how hefty it is. The fact that I finished it, proved to me the size basically got cut in half! I might try this place one more time in the future but just keep in mind that the portion size has gone WAYYY down and the service/ambiance has gone down as well. Been here a few times but most recently for the holiday dozen cheese tamales. You have to order in advance. I also got some salsa to take home and was excited but after steaming a couple I noticed that although the bag said cheese, they gave me the mixed vegetables. I emailed them about what happened and they were quick to respond and said to come back to get the ones I ordered. I was given a dozen even though I already ate two and in addition when I tried to buy more salsa, they told me to take it for free. The tamales are amazing and so is the habanero salsa, love super spicey food so the habanero might be too hot for some. I was expecting the tamales to last for a few months but we're gone in one. The nachos may have been light on the chips but it was piled high with everything else. The grilled chicken was so juicy and flavorful and the fresh salsa and guacamole along with the spicy pickled jalapeño and vegetables was a party in my mouth. The cashier Cristina made the judgmental racists comments to, two co-workers ( man and a cashier female.) I literally was waiting to pay when she was telling her co-workers I didn't know how to order etc. I guess they have a number system now, I know I asked a customer waitingfor her order. La palma employees lack compassion, empathy, professionalism and no customer service. I told Cristina before you judge, help! rather than be gossiping to your coworkers, help new customer's is a shame because the food was great but I won't be going to the La Palma do to the worse customer service experience. Normally I order my food for pick it up, they told me 20 minutes for it to arrive and that they no longer accept orders but when I called they took my order and didn't tell me anything, I had to wait another 20 minutes for them to place my order, basically 40 minutes wasted just because it was for my son otherwise I wouldn't have ordered it at all. They don't take orders by phone even though they do accept them, you're just wasting your time, the way your order is placed when you arrive with them is absurd and ridiculous, they just tell customers they can't accept orders by phone that easily. read more

Absolute love this place! This is a store and restaurant combined. When you walk in you can see all the items they have for sale. It seems small but they have a lot of items inside. In the very back you can see a large menu where you can order tacos, burritos, tamales, sopes, etc. You can purchase fresh tortillas anytime of the day along with some fresh salsas. They go wonderful with the selection of carnitas they sell to make tacos at home. They also have other items on sale that I love to come here for it all including the durros, chicharones, and fresh guacamole. Moving from Chicago, where the Mexican food is phenomenal I wasn't expecting to find a place with such good food. I love coming here to get my tamale fix or anything whenever I am craving a good meal. I usually travel out of town for the holidays but recently I wasn't able to due to medical issues. For the past 3 years, around the holidays, I buy premade masa from here to help make the tamale tradition a little bit easier. They also sell the tamales by the dozen in case you are unable to make them at home. The line gets super long around this time of year though because the tamales are very fresh and very delicious. They are a good hefty size as well. The staff is always friendly and they give you utensils when you order food to sit around the corner and enjoy your meal. Where do I begin? This establishment is so freaking special to me because I would go here with my lita when I was like 7 years old. I grew up on this food and now in a full circle moment my 8 year old daughter is obsessed with it. The way the owner cares so deeply about the quality of her food is so special. First of all everything is made from scratch. You will not find a better flour or corn tortilla in San Francisco. There's a reason why this place has thrived for so many years. This is such an important part of the community because it's been feeding the mission high quality ingredients for so many years. I've ordered catering from La Palma a few times for me and for my job and it's just so good. It's also annoying to not see La Palma on the lists for the best burrito in SF. I've taken so many of my friends and family here and they all say the same thing. This is my favorite burrito in the city. Thank you Aida for striving for quality every single time. Amazing catering!! I was looking for places to cater for a party and stumbled upon la palma. I came here beforehand to try their food out before trying out their catering. I was definitely surprised that this is actually more of a store that serves food. I tried their al pastor burrito, al pastor taco, chicken taco, and queso con lorco pupusa, We were so pleasantly surprised how good the chicken was. The al pastor was okay, not as flavorful as I was hoping. The pupusa was really good too, definitely fresh. They gave some pickled veggies that went really well with it. Since I was content with their food, I decided to order their catering. I called in my order for their taco bar catering. I chose carne asada and chicken with sauce for the two meats, black beans, and strawberry agua fresca. It came with plenty of salsa and tortillas and chips. They recommend picking up the food around 10am. The website says that the food is enough for 25 people. I had about 15 and we ate up all the meat, tortillas, chips. We had a lot of beans, cactus salad, and agua fresca left over. The total was close to 370$. Id probably recommend getting rice instead of beans. My friends absolutely loved the food and could not stop raving how good it was. At one point, we were using the chips to make lil nacho bowls. So glad I got to find this place and definitely plan to order again for the future. Both times I came, the store was fairly crowded. I've been a loyal supporter of La Palma, but after my recent visits, it's clear there's room for serious improvement. We've picked up pounds of your fresh corn dough on two separate occasions, and both times it smelled fermented. This isn't what fresh masa should be. On top of that, the beef tamal we tried tasted off, as though it was made with old, spoiled masa. La Palma has a reputation in the community, but if this is the standard being accepted, we're settling for less than what we deserve. Wow I'm still thinking about their freshly made tortillas for their buritto. The fillings were nothing special but that tortilla is so soft. I tried the wheat and flour so far and they were awesome. I make wraps at home with store bought tortillas but La Palma is nothing like those. read more
