Pupusa and Taco Handmade Corn Tortilla carnitas
    Kristen J.

Can't believe I just found out about this spot! My bf and I love finding out spots that make their own tortillas and this was the spot! Hefty super burritos and handmade tacos and pupusas! Love their orange sauce, kinda had hints of carrot for their salsa. They sell other ingredients and condiments if doing your own taco bar at home, so this may be the spot for when we decide to do that.

Your best option to elevate your homemade Mexican food. I got a friend who brought authentic shredded chicken from Central America and the only way to do it justice is get some tortilla from La Palma. When it was all said and done, I was transported back to vacation under the hot sun, cool Caribbean breeze whispering to me and the ice cracking from my Cola. It was sublime. The service was good as usually. Fast and friendly staff ready to help.

Soft tacos (chile verde, al pastor, carne asada) | carne asada handmade taco | carnitas huarache

Stopped by on a sunny Sunday afternoon and the place was doing BUSINESS. So many options so ordered a few different things to try. Soft tacos were our fave. Good tortilla to topping ratio, even with the double tortilla. I typically will only eat one but here the tortillas are too good to waste! The meats were super flavorful. Glad we tried the chile verde although too wet for taco. The al pastor and carne asada were winners. We also tried a carne asada handmade taco, which has a much fluffier thicker larger tortilla - loads more meat and beans but found the tortilla too thick for me. The huarache was similarly thick but filled with a little bean and topped with cabbage which I appreciated to lighten it up. The carnitas was kinda dry though and there wasn't enough salsa to even that out. Will need to return to try the crispy tacos, chicharrones, lengua, tamales, pupusas, burritos.. Takes credit card and Apple Pay! Has seating around the side for your feast.

The final stop of a self guided Mission taqueria crawl brought us to La Palma for pupusas! Since I didn't do the planning and was just along for the ride, I was surprised to see that our last stop was both a market and taqueria/deli. We had fun looking around the market before ordering. I wished we didn't already have so many food plans coming up as I would've loved to stock up on all the goodies here. They had fresh salsa, homemade tortillas, meat, and other goods too, all of which looked delicious. We ended up ordering two pupusas here, one bean and cheese and one chicharon and cheese. By the time we made it to this stop we were beyond full and ended up taking them to go, which was perfect since there was nowhere to actually sit and eat here anyways! After out walk and drive home, we ended up trying the pupusas about 45 minutes later, so they weren't at their peak, but they were still very good! Even though I was extremely full, I did go in for a few more bites of the bean and cheese one because the beans were so damn good. The chicharon one was also good, but as a self proclaimed bean girl, the bean one stole the show for me.

My favorite spot in the city to get freshly fried chicharons! It is always a treat to get these.

Best burritos in the Mission. Smaller lines, outside seating - just perfect. For those who like Chicarones they have a lot of them

Are the vegetarian tamales made with pork lard (manteca) in the masa?

    Do they have menudo?

I suggest you go into the shop and ask. They well may have it sometimes.

I ordered the carnitas burrito and my husband ordered the carne asada one. We also asked the guys for a salsa picante and their house made one delivered! The ingredients were tasty, well seasoned and fresh. Service is quick, food and ambiance are no frills and cash only. I think about this burrito daily and am willing to travel across the country to get it again. Not to mention, but this is a Mission style burrito in the Mission! This is the only way to do it and I now totally understand the hype.

A few people were already in there eating, and we know this place is good, as a few others in our group and I have been here multiple times. The Taqueria is typical of any other, with bench-style chairs for folks to sit on, a water station, and workers cooking it up in the kitchen. I wasn't too hungry, so I grabbed a Super Lengua Taco, while my friends grabbed burritos, we ended up grabbing 3 complimentary chips and guac/salsa with our order and the food came out pretty quickly. When I saw my Taco I forgot how much they stuffed it and wow, two of these would've filled me up just like a taco; there was so much Lengua that it kept falling off after every bite. The flavors all came together and I scruffed down the whole thing after about 6+ bites! Definitely a place to come to if you're looking for a full meal, or something to snack on!

While I can say the staff was friendly and the service was good, I honestly don't think it lives up to the hype. In my opinion, it's become more of a tourist destination than a must-visit local taqueria. The food was decent, but there are several nearby places that offer better-tasting tacos and burritos for less money--and without the long wait. I'm glad I gave it a try, but I probably wouldn't go back. If you're visiting San Francisco, it's worth knowing there are plenty of excellent local taquerias that provide better value.
