Nice ambience with a cute screened in garden space. Service was friendly and pretty fast. However, it's very much "American inspired" French food so not a place to have classic french dishes - menu (for brunch) seemed to be a mix of southern, mexican, french options. Price is very reasonable for the portion and the atmosphere. I would recommend it to people who are looking for a casual & elegant brunch while not craving for a specific kind of food.

My partner and I came with another couple after an event in chapel hill. I was impressed that there was no wait and there was a lot of parking close (had to pay per hour). I had the GOAT Bloody Mary, which was very good. I felt meh about the grilled cheese but the rest was great! I had the chicken and waffles and my partner had the brunch squatch. The chicken and waffles was really good! The waffle was just okay but the chicken was bomb! My partner's food was on the cooler side was his biggest complaint. It was a lot of food! I tried the grits and didn't love them, but I'm not a huge grits fan. It was also super cute inside and had a huge bar. I loved the vibe of the decor and set up. Over all, I'd say go back for the chicken and waffles and bloody Mary's! Everything else was meh and I'd order something different next time.

We visited La Res last evening, as part of a wedding rehearsal party of twenty or so persons. In a word, the staff was "attentive." As folks were arriving, they were discretely directed to the bar, where various vintages had just been poured. Beer and other alcohol were poured to order. This really cut down wait time, and increased time to socialize! (I wish I'd noted the label of the pinot noir they served - it was excellent!) We were given discretionary time to mingle - that is to say, the tables were ready, they were waiting on us. When we did finally move into those two rooms up front, the wait staff was prepared. They were prompt yet unobtrusive; refreshing wine glasses and other beverages and taking orders seamlessly. (I would guess they had enough staff to wait on our group - I say this only because our young man was present whenever we needed him and as soon as we needed him, but kept more or less out of sight when we didn't.) Although there were varied dishes on our Prix fixe menu, I can only comment about the quality of what I had. To start, there was gazpacho. It was complex enough to make me smile! You could taste the individual flavors, so clearly it had been made fresh. The beef tenderloin over mashed potatoes with asparagus and carrots was done to perfection! I don't eat a lot of red meat anymore, so when I do have it, I want the top-of-the-line stuff... and this was it! Beautifully marbled, tender and juicy. The asparagus was a bit on the large side, and the potatoes were just okay... but the overall impression was that I'd had an excellent meal. The groom's cake for dessert (carrot cake with cream cheese icing) was very tasty indeed, and the cappuccino was expertly made. I've been in the area for almost 20 years now, and this was my first visit to La Res. I'm looking forward to a return visit later this summer, to see what their service is like for smaller or more intimate groups.

I came here for an event and so they had a special menu set up for us, and gave us a private room. The staff was very friendly and had great timing when serving the 3 courses. I ordered a salad to start, with mixed greens, wonderful candies walnuts and vinegarette dressing. My entree was a pumpkin risotto with cheese and cranberries, a strange combination but surprisingly wonderful because all of the flavors complimented each other. I ordered a creme brûlée for desert that was wonderful, just sweet enough to not be too much, and a well done caramelized top. Overall great experience, and a little funny because I normally go to La Rez at 1am on weekends.

UPDATE: Had my wedding rehearsal dinner here 3 days ago. They've learned how to make a dirty martini since last time, and the arrangements were very nice. They gave us our own room (with full bar) in the back so we could gather before dinner, and the appetizers were tasty and the waitstaff were right on the spot to help. They even helped us stall for time when a couple of the guests were late! Dinner went very smoothly, and all of the guests appeared to enjoy their meals (vegetarians and meatasauruses alike). We had the choice of tenderloin, salmon, or polenta, all of which were nicely presented. And I don't know where the restaurant gets their baked goods, but the carrot cake for dessert was *seriously* good. Hats off to my new father-in-law for choosing La Res for the dinner! ================ ORIGINAL REVIEW: I admit it: I judge places by how well they listen when I order a very dirty martini, house gin, with olives. La Res didn't pass the test--almost no "dirt" in the one I got last Saturday night. Bah. After a bit too long of a wait, my dining companions ordered appetizers--one got the sweet potato gnocchi; the other, the house salad. Both of them were just fine, they said. Then two of us ordered the venison with roasted root vegetables. The venison was OK and mostly rare, as it's supposed to be, but the vegetables were outstanding (and I hate vegetables). The grouper ordered by the other person was good, too. They finished off with coffee and apple crisp, which they said was very good. La Res is in a renovated bungalow, and it has comfortable seating, a quiet atmosphere, and a good floor plan. We were surprised by how empty the place was on a Saturday night, but maybe that was because of the ACC tournament games going on that day. For the prices La Res charges, I think I'd rather go to Magnolia Grill in Durham, where the food and service are in a league of their own.

First of all, when entering, it is very crowded near the door. We met with the hostess at the door and she greeted us and said she would need to clear off a table for us and told us we would need to order at the register. That's fine..... she offered us menus to look at while we waited. So, we took the menus and expected to be told when the table was ready. What I was not told is that we were apparently right where the line for the register is to form. I didn't know that until another customer decided to make a nasty comment about "moving up". Well, after 5 minutes of waiting we just went and sat down at what was apparently the cleared table. Hostess never came back and told us our table was ready. So we sat down and looked over the menu. We then went up to order and left menus on our table. First of all, the line to order and the entire process to get inside was just way more confusing and unorganized than it needed to be. While in line, someone came by and bused our table and removed the menus we had left. Okay not a big deal, but there were also other customers trying to then come and take our table...... We ordered our food and went back to our table. The food came out in a timely manner and the food was fine. We got a cinnamon roll, coffee, tofu scramble and avocado toast. I really don't have any complaints with the food, but it wasn't anything special. But the complete chaos of this place, unorganized staff, and poor service has permanently written this place off my list. There are too many options in the area for a better breakfast without all the disorganized chaos. Go somewhere else like Briggs, Another Broken Egg, Foster's, or Flying Biscuit. You won't be guessing at how their setup works when you enter the door...... Any of these other options would be more satisfying and provide better service.

We usually get the vegetarian family meals, which costs $95 and has enough food for 4 people for 4 days. This comes out to ~$6/meal, which is hard to beat even cooking our own food. A few years ago, the meals each day were all pretty similar, and we grew tired of them. But recently, they are so much more well thought out, and we love how easy it is to order, pick up, and bake these dishes. We usually have enough for leftovers, extra bonus. With the amount of time and money we save shopping for dinner/lunch groceries, cooking each night, and doing extra dishes for those meals, the family dinners at The Root Cellar are a no-brainer. Admittedly, we've never gotten coffee or dined in at the cafe, but it's always about 50% packed, so they must be doing something right :)

Though the name may suggest a cozy café, The Root Cellar is decidedly not that. This place is huge with plenty of seating and space. The restaurant/bakery occupies the front half while wine, beer, and a few grocery items for sale can be found toward the back. While you're unlikely to be left waiting to find a table, it can get a bit loud in here. For a breakfast/lunch place, The Root Cellar's menu offers a good amount of variety. Go for a pastry, egg plate, or smoothie in the morning or a salad, sandwich, or wrap later in the day. The sandwiches show a variety of global influences, the pastries are made in-house, and the coffee uses Joe Van Gogh beans. Ordering is a bit chaotic as lines approached the register from two different sides with no indication of which was the correct queue. The cashier, while not rude, very much seemed like she would rather be anywhere else. Wanting something light to tide me over until lunch, I opted for a green smoothie and an herb cheddar biscuit. I didn't have long to wait for either. The smoothie was a bit sweet, and, at $8.50, no bargain. On the other and, the biscuit - warm and savory - was delicious and a much more reasonable $3. I wouldn't rule out returning to The Root Cellar, but it's not a place I would go out of my way to visit during future Chapel Hill trips, either.

I will say everything that I got from the drinks to the shared appetizer of pistachio feta(?) and pita was good.
