Nice ambience with a cute screened in garden space. Service was friendly and pretty fast. However, it's very much "American inspired" French food so not a place to have classic french dishes - menu (for brunch) seemed to be a mix of southern, mexican, french options. Price is very reasonable for the portion and the atmosphere. I would recommend it to people who are looking for a casual & elegant brunch while not craving for a specific kind of food.

My partner and I came with another couple after an event in chapel hill. I was impressed that there was no wait and there was a lot of parking close (had to pay per hour). I had the GOAT Bloody Mary, which was very good. I felt meh about the grilled cheese but the rest was great! I had the chicken and waffles and my partner had the brunch squatch. The chicken and waffles was really good! The waffle was just okay but the chicken was bomb! My partner's food was on the cooler side was his biggest complaint. It was a lot of food! I tried the grits and didn't love them, but I'm not a huge grits fan. It was also super cute inside and had a huge bar. I loved the vibe of the decor and set up. Over all, I'd say go back for the chicken and waffles and bloody Mary's! Everything else was meh and I'd order something different next time.

We visited La Res last evening, as part of a wedding rehearsal party of twenty or so persons. In a word, the staff was "attentive." As folks were arriving, they were discretely directed to the bar, where various vintages had just been poured. Beer and other alcohol were poured to order. This really cut down wait time, and increased time to socialize! (I wish I'd noted the label of the pinot noir they served - it was excellent!) We were given discretionary time to mingle - that is to say, the tables were ready, they were waiting on us. When we did finally move into those two rooms up front, the wait staff was prepared. They were prompt yet unobtrusive; refreshing wine glasses and other beverages and taking orders seamlessly. (I would guess they had enough staff to wait on our group - I say this only because our young man was present whenever we needed him and as soon as we needed him, but kept more or less out of sight when we didn't.) Although there were varied dishes on our Prix fixe menu, I can only comment about the quality of what I had. To start, there was gazpacho. It was complex enough to make me smile! You could taste the individual flavors, so clearly it had been made fresh. The beef tenderloin over mashed potatoes with asparagus and carrots was done to perfection! I don't eat a lot of red meat anymore, so when I do have it, I want the top-of-the-line stuff... and this was it! Beautifully marbled, tender and juicy. The asparagus was a bit on the large side, and the potatoes were just okay... but the overall impression was that I'd had an excellent meal. The groom's cake for dessert (carrot cake with cream cheese icing) was very tasty indeed, and the cappuccino was expertly made. I've been in the area for almost 20 years now, and this was my first visit to La Res. I'm looking forward to a return visit later this summer, to see what their service is like for smaller or more intimate groups.

I came here for an event and so they had a special menu set up for us, and gave us a private room. The staff was very friendly and had great timing when serving the 3 courses. I ordered a salad to start, with mixed greens, wonderful candies walnuts and vinegarette dressing. My entree was a pumpkin risotto with cheese and cranberries, a strange combination but surprisingly wonderful because all of the flavors complimented each other. I ordered a creme brûlée for desert that was wonderful, just sweet enough to not be too much, and a well done caramelized top. Overall great experience, and a little funny because I normally go to La Rez at 1am on weekends.

UPDATE: Had my wedding rehearsal dinner here 3 days ago. They've learned how to make a dirty martini since last time, and the arrangements were very nice. They gave us our own room (with full bar) in the back so we could gather before dinner, and the appetizers were tasty and the waitstaff were right on the spot to help. They even helped us stall for time when a couple of the guests were late! Dinner went very smoothly, and all of the guests appeared to enjoy their meals (vegetarians and meatasauruses alike). We had the choice of tenderloin, salmon, or polenta, all of which were nicely presented. And I don't know where the restaurant gets their baked goods, but the carrot cake for dessert was *seriously* good. Hats off to my new father-in-law for choosing La Res for the dinner! ================ ORIGINAL REVIEW: I admit it: I judge places by how well they listen when I order a very dirty martini, house gin, with olives. La Res didn't pass the test--almost no "dirt" in the one I got last Saturday night. Bah. After a bit too long of a wait, my dining companions ordered appetizers--one got the sweet potato gnocchi; the other, the house salad. Both of them were just fine, they said. Then two of us ordered the venison with roasted root vegetables. The venison was OK and mostly rare, as it's supposed to be, but the vegetables were outstanding (and I hate vegetables). The grouper ordered by the other person was good, too. They finished off with coffee and apple crisp, which they said was very good. La Res is in a renovated bungalow, and it has comfortable seating, a quiet atmosphere, and a good floor plan. We were surprised by how empty the place was on a Saturday night, but maybe that was because of the ACC tournament games going on that day. For the prices La Res charges, I think I'd rather go to Magnolia Grill in Durham, where the food and service are in a league of their own.

The buffet was one of the best I've seen from an omelette station, lots of delicious food stations (my daughter said the shrimp was so good that she went up for seconds) and so many yummy tasting desserts. We were in and out within 45 minutes since the buffet was self serve. We did have to track down a waitress in order to pay, but no biggie since it was a lovely atmosphere to enjoy while waiting. I can't speak to their normal meals, but if it was as good as the Sunday buffet I"m sure it's great!

One of the girls recently turned 21 she said and she was very friendly and approachable. We sat at the bar to eat and have a few drinks for a girls night. It definitely is a special occasion type of place because it is so extremely expensive. I literally cringed when I paid almost $50 for two drinks for the night. I got a single glass of wine as well as an espresso martini. Not really anything special. It almost seems like a lot of the hype around it is because it's so expensive it's considered "classy". It's just silly It was cool to check out some of the downstairs area of the hotel but I wouldn't be back anytime soon unless for an event or another gathering. I will say everything that I got from the drinks to the shared appetizer of pistachio feta(?) and pita was good. It was a lot better experience with the food than my first experience during a lunch time I came with my nana years before. Overall, it's an interesting place, but not a common hang out spot unless I was on a surgeons salary.

With the quinoa adding a crispy crunch to the dish. Having only done lunch at tandem I was not prepared for the taste and unusual foods on the dinner menu. My wife ordered the 72 hr short ribs they were the most delicious and tasty short ribs I had ever encountered. I usually never order short ribs but I would try these out. Our dinner guest had the rib eye steak for one it was also delicious from our guests response. The service is always great with enough service but never overwhelming. For a night cap we enjoyed a Remy cognac. With there cheesecake and chocolate pudding cake. Both were delicious and very tasty.

The appetizers came out quickly which was nice, although they could have been warmer, they tasted great. Then our steaks came out. While they were served warm, they were also tough, to the point of being inedible. We asked to send them back and requested the menu again so that we could make another choice. We were told that we could order something else, but that the steaks would remain on the bill because quote "the manager feels these are quality cuts of meat". So, there was no effort to accommodate us, the customer. No offer of remaking the meal, no nothing. Instead, we were treated like we were trying to get a free meal, when we clearly wanted to try another menu item. We were trying to salvage our Valentine's meal and instead we left after less than 45mins with a $200+ bill and a pair of rubbery steaks we still cannot eat. I sincerely hope the management can see this is clearly not how you gain and keep customers. We were eager to recommend Tandem to friends, at this point we will not.
