We were both pleased and grateful with how we were accommodated and served. Staff English was surprisingly good, although we were still trying our best to speak the language. Both lunches were over a full bottle of local wine and a nice view of the river below and the mountains beyond. We shared the local Lebaniego stew the first time and ordered "steak" the second time. This was all a lot of food, although we did share a dessert the first time. It was all delicious, which is usually even more so when the service and setting is so nice. Note: There's a Hotel here too which is not the subject of this review.

The Mediterranean nations have the word, but not the place: their socialization centers are tables at cafés and restaurants, where you hang out with people you knew before you arrived. They appear not to appreciate the benefits of a drinking establishment you can patronize specifically to meet strangers. They know that nice hotels are supposed to HAVE bars, though. That's why in the basement of Oviedo's Gran Hotel is a gorgeous, elegant, wood-paneled bar with comfy chairs perfect for lounging in, and hi-top stools perfect for chatting in: they know they're SUPPOSED to have them. Maybe they saw it in a movie, or something. The problem is, nobody here knows how to use it. Or if they do, they choose not to. That's why I'm sitting here alone drinking an Armagnac, admiring the beautiful, empty room, sad that none of the (Oviedons? Oviedites?) the people of Oviedo know what a fabulous watering hole in their midst. This place would be shoulder-to-shoulder in NY, SF, Chicago, Boston, LA, name it. The bartender is excellent; he comes out to check on me every three minutes or so, before disappearing into the back to resume his conversation with his unseen coworker (the chef, perhaps? An unneeded waiter?). But this place is a ghost town. It is a great shame, because a lot of work and money obviously went into making this a first rate bar. So if you're in town, and desire an awesome cocktail lounge, come to the Black Bar (a name, one assumes, taken from its black granite bar top). Bring all your friends - you'll have the place to yourselves.

An ersatz Irish pub well out of the tourist lanes Cerveceria Triskel evidently sits well with the locals....music be damned. This neighborhood hangout does a robust business in take-out food. Not something you see everyday. The clientele looks like a cross representation of the local population with the well dressed mixing well with the not so much. There is a generous supply of complimentary tapas to go along with your drink but the light that shines the brightest here are the burgers. We started out with the idea of a simple hamburger but like most simple things our simple burger got out of hand pretty fast. We don't know how we did it but our burger ended up with: A hamburger patty Two layers of goat cheese Tomato Lettuce Onion Lomo Egg And a sesame seed bun All for 7 euros. And the best part was it was delicious. Cervecería Triskel is a blue collar eats place and we will be sure to wear our best blue collar when we return...which we will.

Let's take a trip to Chicago of the 1920s...via Santander…read more Although it appears that this place as been around for a while (judging by the review from 2018), Little Bobby's might be a bit of a hidden gem in Santander. A friend of a friend from the U.S. mentioned this place, and none of the Santanderios (around 40yrs of age) that were with us knew about it. Upon crossing the the threshold of the bookcase door, we were immediately transported by to the Prohibition Era of Chicago circa the 1920s...fortunately, without the mobster gangsters from that era. The first thing that I noticed upon entering Little Bobby's (hmm, that sounds weird; just pretend I wrote "upon entering Little Bobby's cocktail lounge") was the blasting air conditioning. Because of that amenity, I immediately fell in love with the cocktail bar...without even having a cocktail. ;) As expected, the cocktail bar/lounge had a very impressive variety of cocktails and top-shelf alcohol brands. I'll give them credit because from my understanding (after visiting Santander 8+ times) folks prefer to consume beer, wine and gin-tonics over multi-ingredient cocktails, so cocktails bars is not a big thing in the city. However, I noticed that a few cocktail bars have sprout up in Santander during our last visit. Perhaps, increased tourism in this area is building a foundation for this particular niche. However, I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but time will tell. Although our time at Little Bobby's was short, because we were spent from a long day of walking around and boozing at other places, I absolutely had a blast in the chill (both figuratively and literally), laidback environment. Overall, service was great although my drink (a Manhattan, which is basically a whiskey martini) took a little longer to prepare compared to other three cocktails that folks in my group ordered. Prices were a bit higher than standard restaurants in the area, but I guess that is to be expected for a place like Little Bobby's. Although the cocktail prices were a bit higher, the end result was somewhat worth it - especially if you want something outside of the typical caña or gin-tonic. I definitely hope to return to Little Bobby's the next time I'm in Santander.

It's like walking back in time and submerging yourself in old fashioned vibes. The decoration is perfection and spacing and music is smooth. Perfect ambiance for a night out with friends you've known for years and friends you just met. It a place I keep going back to in a town that can be lackluster after a few days.
