We went to La Ricotta in Porto for my birthday. It was all delicious. We had the black ham as a starter, the cod and gnocchi for meals and then dessert was a delicious chocolate cake! They brought it out with a candle to celebrate my birthday. The restaurant itself had great ambiance, modern with old Porto touches. Great service, great atmosphere, great food, not too expensive. AMONG THE BEST IN PORTO: This has to be among the best restaurants in Porto, Portugal. The decor is elegant and classic. The servers have a refined knowledge of the food and bar menu. They are quick to offer suggestions regarding the quality of particular meats or fish for that day. A crusty bread with a deep rich olive oil with pink peppercorns and a perfumed light olive oil for dipping is brought with the cocktails. Our appetizers consisted of a dual mozzarella, tomato with dressed arugula and a gorgonzola, parmesan with pumpkin puree. Both had a beautiful plating as well as quality fresh ingredients. The entries were a grilled 5" shrimp and roasted crispy duck thigh. The portions were large and flavor of a 5 star restaurant. They offer a premium selection of wines but they also offer several Port wine tastings which the servers are very knowledgeable about. I would highly recommend this restaurant, it is a pleasure to dine there. The price is fair for the service, ambiance and quality of food. read more

I was traveling in Porto alone and this is a restaurant I got the name from a Korean friend I met in hostel. It's an Italian restaurant. I mentioned Korean friend because I think this is one of their secret spot of the city. I came around noon for the lunch menu and there are already a lot of Korean tourist waiting outside the restaurant. I don't mean to specify them but after having meal here I wish all the tourist around the world would know Thai place!!!!!!! I sat down and order my set of meals I was surprised the set is only 10 euros for 3 courses meal and bread. The bread is so good that I literally finish them all. From appetizer, main course to dessert there's nothing I don't like!! And the waiters are super sweet and though they don't speak English they still serve you very well. I'm happily giving them five stars and I'll be happy to come back again whenever my next Porto trip is. read more

This was a fantastic restaurant with a good mix of Portuguese and Italian meals. We had a group of 5 and started with bread and olive oil and table wine. For mains, our group had gnocchi, ravioli, risotto with prawns and seafood (MASSIVE prawn,) and risotto with duck. I may be biased but my risotto with duck was so delicious - highly recommended. Dessert was also spectacular - we had 2 orders of the gelato blanco e negro - vanilla and chocolate chip gelato with hot fudge poured over the top. Presentation of the dishes at La Ricotta was very pleasing to the eye. The smoked swordfish carpaccio for example was nicely decorated with micro vegetables. The mixed cheese selection was turned into a nice 'construction' as was the pineapple dessert. This restaurant ranked below Puro and I'm not sure why. Our food was very good and we ate a lot, but didn't feel heavy upon leaving. Ambience was nice and the waiters were attentive and friendly. My husband speaks Portuguese, but our kids and I don't, and the waiter made sure to speak English to us. They were very accommodating with food preferences and had good wine prices. We would definitely eat there again if visiting Porto. read more

Went here very late because our original recommendation was closed. "No problem, welcome!" It was midnight. The service was perfect; friendly, knowledgable and attentive. But the food?!! Holy crap was it good! Grilled veal loin with fresh pasta for me just stopped me in my tracks. Perfectly executed in every way. My wife had the the gnocchi with herbs and loved it. No matter what I write, it'll fall short of our experience here, and I cannot do it justice, but I'll give it a shot: this place oozes charm, refined yet rustic, intimate and hushed, begs for romance and drink. Almost a log cabin feel, but as if an Emperor decorated it :-) Loads and loads of massive red wine bottles everywhere. A small bar area with stools to the side, and little dining tables scattered throughout the small room. The walls are exposed brickwork, and not in the pretentious manner of the hip places around here, but this is the real deal--the bricks from yesteryear. It was as if stepping into a year bygone. A charming little doorway ... we entered not sure whether it was going to be Portuguese or Italian, not wanting the latter, given we were in Portugal. But we were greeted with such warmth and fanfare, we happily sat down, and saw that the menu had a fusion of both cuisines, and since we were completely salted cod out, ordered a "dinner green salad" and a steak. The salad was just okay, nothing to trumpet about (especially from a CA salad lovers perspective), but the ambience was so special, we readily forgave it, looking forward to the steak. When it came, we took a bit and honestly neither my husband nor I could eat it--it was oddly gamey ... not sure if it was us or if our expectations were off. We asked for the bill and fully intended to pay for it, but our server insisted over and over if she could get us something else, she was the most earnest little thing, and when we said we didn't want to trouble them, we would pay the bill, etc. She called the manager, who stood literally with us for over five minutes and basically ordered us (in the sweetest way possible), to get something else and made several suggestions, e.g. a special Portuguese pork dish, where the pigs are fed only chestnuts?! We also got a squid ink pasta. After all this kind and sweet fuss directed our way, while we were waiting, my husband and I were petrified that what if we couldn't choke the pork? It finally came--and it was heavenly: the most tender and succulent, tasty pork loin dish I've ever eaten, smothered in a creamy sauce of some sort, and an intensely flavored pasta dish, black with the squid, salty and earthy ... it was everything we could've hoped for. This was above and beyond gracious, they acted as if we were family and they refused, simply flatly refused to let us leave without being full! Who does that anymore?? The hostess, our server, the manager put their souls into giving us dinner, this was their life's work and they were putting their all into it, with pride. When we told the manager how much we loved the pork, in his broken English he responded, "the best part is you will take with you a good memory!" When we left, more than with the food, our hearts heavy with their love :-) This restaurant humbled me deeply, and for this I would've paid handsomely--with zero food. read more

I had polvo assado com batatas, it was two octopus tentacles (a tad too chewy) laid over salty potatoes and a cube of spinach that looked like it came straight from the package. On top was some diced peppers. Not worth the 18€ pricetag. Dessert and wine were very good. Sponge cake was A+, Riepoort dry white port wine was great. One of the best restaurants on our 1 month Europe trip!! We ate a lot of food on our trip and this has to go down as the top meal. It should also be noted that this is my first review of a restaurant I've ever made. It was so good so I had to review it! My husband had the veal chop and I had the gnocchi. Both equally delicious. Four of us had dinner at the La Ricotta our last night in Portugal after a two week Epicurean Adventure cruise/tour in Portugal and Spain. The dinner at La Ricotta was the highlight of the entire trip. We had more expensive meals, but did not have any that compared in quality to the meals we enjoyed that night. The steak (on the menu as a veal chop) was a porterhouse steak that was one of the tenderest and flavorful I have ever tasted. The pork and sliced beef were also outstanding, being flavorful and tender. The server was excellent and he made several suggestions regarding food and wine that all turned out to be excellent choices. In fact every part of the meal was outstanding. The decor was rustic mixed with modern and was very tasteful. All in all, it was an excellent way to end the vacation. read more
