A peaceful place to Offer up some prayers, seek out solace or just walk around the lovely grounds. Whenever a patient of mine is struggling I pray the 28 stairs for them. They never fail me. It's a tradition to always come here every year before Christmas. It probably takes around two hours to walk around and check out everything. The lights are always remarkably beautiful. It truly feels like the holidays when I arrive. They have gift shops and sometimes live music playing inside one of the buildings. Clopper the donkey is always friendly and outside to visit. It's the holla-days. Holla holla for the dollar dollar. First off, homegirl trying to keep her bank stacked. These $5 Yankee swaps are killing yo girl. She doesn't want a tacky ornament, she just wants to keep her Benjamin's. Now homegirl has a home-child so she must make financial sacrifices to make the holidays special. When she remembered Lasallette's Christmas light display she rejoiced. It wasn't quite free because gasoline costs money but it was close enough. Homegirl realizes the only free things in this world are air and selfies. Now homegirl packed up the tots and told them more lies than Santa. She told the kids that tickets were very hard to get, and expensive at that. As they popped out one by one from the Escalade she stamped their hands to make sure they knew this was an EVENT. Homegirl believes that children these days need to appreciate my hard earned coin, even though Christmas lights are free. What isn't free for real is popcorn, hot chocolate, cider or hotdogs. Concession stand food. All thing fattening and buttery, sticks to yo guttery. The home babies already know they better not even be sniffing those expensive scents. The free lights were fantastic. They say a prayer and sing silent night before the lights turn on at 5. Homegirl will say, she was freezing in her Faragamos. These winter nights are toying with yo girls fashion ensembles. She's trying to be out here with these lean legs and this chill in the air is making homegirls stubble bubble! Not a good look. Good news is, you can take shelter indoors for pictures with Santa, buy food, or visit the collection of various Nativity scenes. By the end of the night homegirl is ready for her martini. While she does enjoy the opportunity to walk outside surrounded by the lights and sub sequential,cameras, she just wants her nightly bubble bath and rose petals. It takes a lot out of homegirl to look like an 11 in a world of 7's. Though she doesn't at all regret her trip to see the twinkling lights, after all, it was free as a bee, holla holla for the holidays, not a dolla spent, that's homegirls way. read more

Growing up in the greater Boston area i never knew about La Salette until my move to the greater Providence area. I almost feel a little cheated. This one stop Christmas light shop (and religious shrine) definitely beats driving through the Ritzy neighborhoods looking at scattered houses covered in lights in the back of my parent's Buick Regal. I'm the first to admit that I'm more spiritual than religious (lets hope my very catholic grandmother isn't reading this or I'll have to do the Rosary...) but La Salette is beautiful and can charm even a nonbeliever. The lights, the nativity scene, and the natural beauty of the La Salette campus you can't go wrong here. I think it's great they actually incorporate stories in cartoonesque form so kids can understand how Christmas came about and that it's more than harassing their parents for an iPad. The only reason this review is lacking a star is because I agree with Jason N. I think having a tractor pull is not only dangerous but a little obnoxious. The diesel smell that lingers as it passes isn't my favorite. Some parts of the property are a little uneven which gives it the perfect opportunity for a child or adult to trip, fall, and end up under the tractor. I will say the hot chocolate is out of this world! If you go definitely indulge yourself in a cup! You will most definitely not be disappointed!! read more

Every Christmas season there are a few places we like to visit to get into the spirit and to stay mindful of why we are celebrating this special day. La Salette Shrine is at the top of our list and it have become a special stop for my family and I. What we enjoy the most about this shrine is the fact that they do such a great job of decorating for Christmas and they don't charge for entry. A few of the other stops we make during Christmas charge to see the decorations which is annoying because they are usually overpriced. The lights here are in incredible, but our favorite part are all the nativity scenes they have on display. We love looking at the way each nation represents their nativity, and of course I love seeing the ones from Portugal. Overall, this is a great seasonal stop, but it is also a great place to visit during the year if you are hoping to strengthen your spirituality. read more

Lovely place that sells awsome Hot chocolate! I came here for 2 occasions; 1st time for a Vietnamese pilgrimage back in July 24th, 2nd time for the Christmas Holiday Lighting! For the Pilgrimage I thought it was pretty cool, wearing 6 inch heels to greet people into was a bit painful after 2 hours but still lots of fun! I loved the pond and walkway and paths and the signs for each letter of the alphabet. The souviner store was nice ance bright and roomy. For the lighting I believe the main inside buildings were closed but the park and the pond area was open. It was Christmas night I believe that I went up with a group of friends from my church and the lights were shut off at exactly 9 o'clock (too bad we didn't take their speaker warning as serious); in the middle of taking the last picture with my mom the lights were shut off. Almost got that picture! The hotchocolate and kettle sugar popcorn was nice for the ride home. La Salette is a nice peaceful place in a quiet area, lots of parking in 3 different lots and has a candle room, the outdoor mass area, the steps for praying the statues, the gift shop, the snack shop and the indoor mass area was all very lovely, I can't wait to come back for this year's pilgrimage in July! read more

I think it's funny I only have one check-in here. I've been to La Salette more times than I can count, and I know it like the back of my hand. I grew up here, went on retreats here throughout my high school years. Every Good Friday my family and I would do the Holy Steps, and I even remember La Salette before the old monastery burnt down. I love how they have built up La Salette but still kept it's quaint feel. The church is beautiful, and my family still visitors regularly to light candles. You can also personalize a candle if you visit often enough which has been a huge comfort for my family. Having moved away, I don't come here nearly as often as I used to, but during the Christmas season, it is a definite must. To me, there's nothing more special then being able to walk around, hot chocolate in hand taking in all the lights and beauty. I have even brought friends who are not religious to La Salette at Christmas time, and they loved it all, even the nativity collection which is incredibly impressive. To me, La Salette is a lot more than a shrine, it's representative of my childhood. As I grow older, I find returning back here brings me comfort and a great place for self reflection and prayer. read more

This used to be a very spiritual event , a place where you could actually feel God's presence. I was extremely disappointed this year. It's been quite a few years since I have been. I used to go with my Mother and we would light candles for our dearly departed. It was a very emotional and spiritual experience. But they have turned it into a carnival! A merry go round, a fried dough vendor and some carnival game booth, I couldn't believe it. There were screaming kids running all around having no respect for such a holy place. I will not go back unless they change it back to what it once was. I can't believe they bought in to the commercialism of this Holiday. Such a sad shame. read more

A "must go." Being new-ish to New England, I was unaware of what La Salette brings, come Christmastime. It was a surprise on date night to walk up and see dazzling light displays as far as I could see! Since there's a lot to absorb-- and many people might read this review looking for tips-- I'll try and break down La Salette's Christmas Festival of Lights. Parking: The biggest ordeal is parking. La Salette offers a giant-sized parking lot, and still, there's a line waiting for miles up the road-- yes, miles. For those who are able-bodied-- and willing-- you can always park off-site and walk in. That's what we opted to do. We found a spot within a half mile, and hoofed it. There's no cost to park on site, so if you're happy to wait, do so; just be aware, a few other reviewers have complained of a significant wait time, especially on weekends closest to Christmas. Cost: There is no cost to park, and no entrance fee. Everything I saw to "do" or partake in at La Salette was free, including a Christmas concert (inside), outdoor live music, and the International Creche museum. Food and beverages are available for sale but surprisingly affordable (think, $2 for coffee or hot chocolate). La Salette's Festival of Lights runs mostly on donations, so please give if you're able to. To Do: -Christmas Concert: held inside in a "hall" type venue. Seating is first come first served; they announce times over the speaker, and there's also a sign up outside the hall. While the singers may be "amateur", it's a wonderful treat for people to be able to enjoy (and to warm up to!). -outdoor music: throughout the time we were there, La Salette also had a musician outside the food court. It was particularly cold the night we visited, but for more mild nights, it would be rather enjoyable to sit, sip some cocoa, and listen to some live music. -International Creche museum: exactly what you'd imagine. Floor to ceiling examples of creches (nativities) from around the world. We enjoyed walking through-- take your time and enjoy all the different styles and materials, by countries from Paraguay to Japan! -Christmas lights: obviously this is the big draw. There's lights in trees, lights on bushes, lighted decorations everywhere. Christmas music is pumped through loud speakers and can be heard at almost every spot in the park. Lots of opportunities for family pictures (or candid photos with friends or loved ones), so bring your camera, or make sure your iPhone is charged. -life-size nativity with a real donkey: kiddos love this, but I don't believe he's available to be pet. They do sell stuffed donkeys nearby to placate unhappy toddlers. -Catholic iconography: for those seeking a more spiritual experience, there's opportunities abounding here. Velas (candles) can be lit at multiple for a nominal (small) donation. I believe I saw the Stations of the Cross. There's also a beautifully somber stairway to the cross, where one can pray on their knees on each step, all the way up to the top. If you're not religious, you will still greatly enjoy the sanctity of this grand, yet heartwarming, place. -gift shop: La Salette's gift shop is teeming with people! There's lots of religious (Catholic) gifts and personal items, from bibles, to First Communion gifts, to patron saint jewelry, and everything in between. They also sell Christmas ornaments and creches, a nice annual tradition to start with your family: picking out an ornament or a creche figure each year! Prices, again, are reasonable and not theme-park priced. -food and drink: inside the "main building" is a small concessions stand (beverages and take-and-eat food), with a food court on the end of the building. One sign advertised "Make Your Own Smores!" on the fire-pit outside. There's also stand-alone concessions scattered throughout the area, selling fried dough and other delectables. My one complaint is regarding the noise during Festival of Lights! With *so* many families in attendance (especially as you near Christmas Day), the peace and "holiness" of the place is all but destroyed by hundreds of screaming kids and low-class "hooligans" (am I getting old?!), some of which had obviously been imbibing heavily prior to their arrival. I wish there was a place that you could sit and reflect quietly, listening to the tinkling of Christmas carols, and be away from all the hubbub and chaos. All in all, La Salette's Christmas Festival of Lights is a wonder for both young and old. There's plenty to do and see, so come a little early and enjoy everything this beautiful Christmas tradition has to offer. Let's all try to enjoy this experience together! read more

This review is for the shrine and the grounds around the shrine. It's not for the Christmas Festival of Lights or the retreat center. A lot of the negative reviews here are for the Christmas Festival of Lights which gets very crowded. I didn't go into the shrine myself because there was a mass going on (check the schedule before going). There's some beautiful walkways to walk around, some beautiful statues and buildings too. But I don't think it's huge. You can spend at least an hour there. They had a great gift shop. The bistro was closed (check the schedule). I guess the cafeteria is for groups only. They're currently having fish fries on Friday (during Lent). Something I didn't like was that they play music outdoors. It's a touchy-feely kind of emotional music. It's not that it bothered me. I just like to experience places in my own way. It might be a good idea to check their calendar of events before visiting. read more

This is one of those classic Rhode Islander/Southestern Masshole things to do in the Christmas season. I'm not quite sure how I escaped going, especially after thirteen years of Catholic school. Alas, I am nearly thirty, and I went to check out the lights at La Salette for the first time last night. Anywhoo, it's free - which is great for families. What does it look like, though? The grounds are basically strung with lights and there are little scenes lit up all over the place: lit up Christmas around the world, lit up nativity scenes, lit up snowflakes, lit up trees, lit up wise men, lit up sweet baby Jesus...and the list goes on. There are quite a large number of lights (their electric bill must be ridiculous), but to me, they felt out-dated and tired. Luckily, since I am adult, I could handle the emotionally crushing disappointment. I think if I were a five-year old and I was seeing it for the first time, I possibly would enjoy it. But it's just SO COLD I don't know how the little ones don't turn into kidsicles after five minutes. The gift shop is open so you can buy all your holiday gift-giving staples like Biblical Charades. Also, their candle devotion room is open and you can dedicate and light your own candle for $4. They have kettle corn, hot cider, and hot chocolate for sale - you have the option of purchasing your beverage in a Styrofoam cup or a fancy, circus-style light-up mug. The hot chocolate was DELICIOUS - something about walking around in the cold that makes Swiss Miss taste so good. Outside of the spectacle and tradition of the lights, the grounds are beautiful and well kept as far as I could tell as I scuttled through them in the below freezing temperature. They have a nice variety of outdoor areas with the mysteries, the stations, a giant rosary, a recreation of Jesus' tomb, and a shrine to the Lady of La Salette. The new church structure is beautifully modern. I can imagine if I were a practicing, believing Catholic, this would be a wonderful place to pray and meditate in the warmer weather or come for mass on a Sunday or holy day. read more

I have to give La Salette Shrine five stars for generously sharing this beauty of lights with everyone of all faiths year after year. I love taking it all in while sipping the hot chocolate or apple cider that they sell. Inside, they have a gift shop that doesn't interest me but has a lot to offer those looking for spiritual gifts. There is also a room with multiple nativity sets from around the world. I always like to check that out even if it doesn't change year to year. A s'mores station was something new. I think you have to bring your own supplies from home and they supply the fire. For those with children, I suggest checking out the carousel outside. It's a bit tucked away. Parking can be a bit chaotic and even confusing. Going toward the later part of the evening will mean less crowding but be warned that they close promptly at 9. They mean business about that, and they do shut those lights off like clock work. read more

Its gorgeous, lights are everywhere, plenty of Christmas trees and huge pictures with Biblical meaning , reminding us of the TRUE meaning of Christmas. Plenty of lights to guide you through the dark, and stands waiting to pour you a cup of hot chocolate & hot apple cider :) Plus a great gift shop to bring some Christmas memories home. A co-worker suggested stopping by this place during the holidays to view the lights. My wife was in town so we decided to stop by and see them and it was amazing!!! The amount of lights and fixtures they have setup is beyond belief. They have something for everyone to see, whether your 1 or 101, you'll love to go through the grounds and take your time to see everything. Unfortunately, we got there 15 mins prior to closing time and had to run through the grounds, but still saw most everything. Parking isn't easy, but there is ample parking in several areas. It's a good free thing to do with the family and the even had a Star of David, the Crescent and a few other religious symbols on the grounds. read more

This place is epic. The typical way to do this is to go see the Advent and Christmas lights and freeze your butt off. Hot chocolate afterwards. We go during the August recess, which is a LOT less crowded and you can read signs better. There are four main attractions: a re-enactment mountain climb of the Apparition, a recreation of the holy steps in Rome, a Via Crucis, and a really cool rosary pond with the 15 (that's fifteen, not twenty) mysteries, and the typical post-V2 liberal chapel to round it off. I'm sure the vocations are in crisis with this liberal order, but the orthodox little kids who freeze their butts off every December will inherit the earth. read more

I've been hesitating to write this review for quite sometime. Mainly because I have such a overwhelming love for this place. You could say it's borderline biased. My family and I have been going to this shrine every year (and then some) for as long as I can remember. Even before it's grand renovation. The grounds are very large and are perfect for a nice stroll. During the Christmas season, the shrine is covered in twinkling lights, excited children, bundled up families, relaxing hay rides, carnival treats, and your choice of piping hot cider or chocolate. There is also a gift shoppe, bistro and cafeteria that one can warm up and venture in. I particularly love walking along the rosary pond and the confessional that overlooks it. The holy stairs is a beautiful spot to pray in as well. Pleasantly, all the brothers, sisters and priests of the shrine are very warm and welcoming. I feel right at home in their presence. If I could give this shrine 10 stars I would. But then again, I could be just overly zealous of this shrine. read more
