She turned to her colleague and had us seated at a cramped table at the very end -- despite the reservation being for 4 and my name already written down for the good table she'd set aside for "New York." There is no version of this that isn't about where she thought we were from. The only thing that changed between "fully booked" and a warm welcome was a US phone number, and the only thing that changed between that welcome and a bad table was seeing our faces. By that point I was too unsettled to even touch the drink I'd ordered -- we just paid and left. Genuinely one of the most uncomfortable, humiliating experiences I've had at a restaurant.
