While this may be common in Italy, it wasn't clearly anticipated on our end and caught us off guard. It's made from bread crumbs, eggs and lots of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. There are two preparations on the menu: alla Romagnola (with butter and some tasty type of cured meat) and in Brodo (in broth). Both are divine! Also, the Tigelle (small pancake shaped breads) are epic when sliced open and filled with the "pesto" made of lardo (pork fat) and fresh herbs. It's downright delicious made only more tasty if you decide to add mortadella to the mix. And, they have a Lambrusco (sparkling red wine with gold top) on the list that should not be missed! #JustSaying

The staff spoke excellent English and made us feel right at ease. The menu is not extensive but but it is excellent. We started with the vegetarian soufflé antipasto. Such a delicate flavor! Each of us then had a pasta course. All were delightful. (Of course we had wine which was delicious). For dessert we split the torta al riso (which turns out to be a regional favorite) and the crema inglese. Yum. Yum. Yum. Not only was the food delicious but the staff so kind and helpful. It was especially great for us that it was covered seating, as it was raining all day. We started with some bruschetta. It was forgettable bread but the tomatoes and oil were both pretty good - not amazing. We eat got a pizza, and both fell in love. We went here on recommendation that it was the best pizza in italy (including Naples) and we concur (only thing better is chicago deep dish). By the time we left, the place was fully packed. I was craving some fresh seafood, as all of the rich, delicious creamy and cheesy pastas I had been eating were starting to feel too heavy for me. The seafood platter I got was perfect, and I felt the price was very fair for the generous portions of seafood - all perfectly cooked! I wouldn't recommend the side of grilled vegetables for 6 euro, bland and nothing special. My favorite was the sea bream, scallops and shrimp. My husband ordered their lasagna and enjoyed it too, but not his favorite during our time in Bologna. Service was friendly and prompt (especially for European standards compared to what we're used to in the states). Based on our experience, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend La Mela to enjoy for dinner as one of your meals in Bologna!
