Order the Vaca Frita (fried flank steak) with fried onions, the shrimp enchilada, or the Ropa Vieja as great initial choices. If you want a sandwich, you can't go wrong with the Pan con bistec (steak sandwich), or Cubano. The portions here are larger than most places. If you order to-go, they do a great job of packing the dishes separately and giving you buttered toasted bread with each entree in a bag. Solid place for Cuban food. This was our first time there. Small, hole in the wall, that hasn't seen an update since... well, ever. You walk in, are greeted and you seat yourself. The price point is average and similar to other similar restaurants. My husband was super happy that rice & beans count as 1 side, unlike other places. Plus, they leave the pitcher of water on the table. The food was good. Not mind blowing, but good. First off, they serve you a basket full of delicious hot, buttered bread. I ordered the Vaca Frita, my husband ordered the Ropa Vieja. My mom just had a bowl of Chicharros. The Vaca Frita fed me for 2 extra days, just had to make a bit more rice. My husband enjoyed his fleet overs for lunch the next day. Portion sizes are good. My mom enjoyed her potage, but it's hard to completely please the queen of chicharros. For dessert, my mom & I shared a flan. While it was very yellow, it was tasty. We ate it all. Now, the reason for the 4* is what separates them from most Cuban restaurants. The service. La Viña Aragon is homier than it ought to be, tucked away, as it is, in a small retail strip in a nondescript Hialeah neighborhood, next door to Dayma's Unisex Barberia y Peluqueria, just west of the Opa Locka Work Release Center. Entering, I expected a simple diner, so I was surprised by all the stuff the owners had laid in. The accommodations were utilitarian, yet there was art everywhere - cheap art, but a nice effort - and the hanging plants and flowers on each table softened the dining area's hardwood room dividers, glass-topped tables and bare tile floors. La Viña Aragon has the air of a working-class home whose owners are proud of what they've got, and who, when opportunity (read: "payday") permits, repeatedly find something nice to add to the place. If you've ever sat in the living room of such a family and noticed how many neatly-arranged things there are, everywhere, you've seen what I'm talking about. All of which helps me to understand the large-ish and well-executed menu, which lists literally dozens of family-favorite Cuban dishes. La Vina's kitchen offers classics like Ropa Vieja, Vaca Frita and Cuban pork sandwiches (not really a Cuban thing, but when in Rome...), then dives deeply into the canon of traditional grandma cooking. Their menu lists enchilado de pescado (a Creole treatment of fish; here, "pargo", or red snapper) and Filetillo de Pollo Salteado (a sort of stir-fry), and it's telling that many local favorites appear only as specials. You want Rabo Encendido (oxtail stew) or Ajies Rellenos (bell peppers filled with picadillo)? You'll have to wait for abuela to do her thing, and hope you order before the day's supply runs out. La Viña also does a brisk breakfast trade and sells some items wrapped for carryout. And of course, there's a "ventanita" or walk-up window, ubiquitous in the Greater Miami area, where one can purchase food, sweets and excellent Cuban coffee drinks. Three final notes: 1. Like many such neighborhood places, La Viña is cash only. 2. My first time in, I brought pastelitos de guayaba y queso from Palm Springs Bakery, a few doors down. I ordered a cortadito, and, being a polite smuggler, asked the waitress if I could eat my pastries there. She graciously encouraged me to enjoy my treats, and even brought a plate, so I wouldn't have to eat from a paper bag, like an animal. 3. The last time I visited La Viña Aragon, I sat near a man - Eduardo - who warned me away from the chivo. He spoke with a heavy Spanish accent, wore a Marlins shirt and sported a Hemingway beard. My friends Jose and Frances know I am always on the hunt for amazing authentic Cuban food spots when I'm in Miami, so they took me to La Vina Aragon last week while I was visiting. Frances says La Vina is her favorite Cuban spot in the area, as their food quality is amazing, and she's been going to this specific restaurant for close to 30 years! (She grew up in the same neighborhood) Jose told me he loves the sandwiches and the ropa vieja here, and he admitted when he lived in the area, he used to often risk coming in to work late just so he could grab food at La Vina before work. LOL We ordered Ropa Vieja and Vaca Frita, which are always my fav things to eat. Before our entrees came out, we were served a bunch of bread with melted butter on them - PERFECT for dipping into cafe con leche. The Ropa Vieja and Vaca Frita were both SOOOO good and flavorful. The portions too! The Vaca Frita had a bigger portion than the Ropa Vieja, but yo - quality over quantity! Oh, and the Tostones!!! Sooo good, especially with lots of Mojito sauce. Visit this place for first time, a little later than lunch hours, so the place wasn't totally full, the waiter inmediatly came with a pitcher of cold water and the menu, and told us what the specials of the day were. We didn't want a big meal so we ordered steak sandwich and a cup of the soup of the day, garbanzos or chickpeas soup. The soup was delicious, taste like my mother's cooking, and the steak sanwich were so good. In other places we normally have to add lemon or salt for better taste but this sanwich were so good that doesn't need anything else, tasty and big enough to satisfy you, we ended the lunch with a home made flan and arroz con leche. We'll have to return to the area and we'll go to The Viña Aragon again for sure. read more
