    Being a one trick pony doesn't have to be a bad thing. And La Viña is just that: they do one item, a drippy, creamy, absolutely incredible basque cheesecake that they are extremely famous for and deservedly so. This is an obligatory stop to any trip to San Sebastián. Like any popular pinxtos spot in Old Town, you can get expect this to be standing room only, crowded, and a line out the door to get just one thing, but they've clearly been doing this forever and know what to expect. I stopped here at the end of my Saturday afternoon pinxtos crawl, knowing that I was too full from lunch to actually eat it immediately. The menu is pretty simple: you can order by the slice (you get two slices for about 6.50 euros) or a whole cheesecake. They have some pinxtos food items but generally very few people were ordering that. A lot of people stand in the street outside and eat their cheesecake, but I was able to get in/out within 10 minutes for a slice packed to go, which I took to my hotel nearby to enjoy after a good nap. And the cheesecake is genuinely incredible. This is the home / invention of basque cheesecake in the way it's intended to be done: not only browned at the top, but with a drippy, creamy consistency that's almost custard-like. It's genuinely incredible and I've never had anything quite like it in the States. This is a when in Rome situation and absolutely worth the hype. I may or may not have also taken a nap after eating my cheesecake.

    I haven't stopped dreaming of having another slice of La Viña cheesecake for 2 years now. There is nothing else like it in the states, not even close. If you are in San Sebastián go get yourself a slice, I promise you won't regret it. Tucked in the back of Old Town, you might walk right past it if you don't know what you're looking for (like we did the first time)! Expect cheesecakes, on cheesecakes, on cheesecakes. They don't stop making them. Can't get busy and loud since the bar is on the smaller side and is majority standing room only. Grab a slice and pair it with a glass of prosecco, cheers!

    I came a little earlier so missed the big rush, but it was still busy. Good part is I didn't have to wait in line, only a few minutes at the counter. After trying it I get what the hype is all about. Best description I give is that it was very flavorful, creamy, and the most delectable cheesecake I've had. I would say it was a cheesecake with a consistency and texture of flan. Compared to the amount of business they get it's quite small inside so seating can be difficult. Going early, helped as I was able to secure a place to sit and enjoy my cheesecake.

    I'm just reviewing this on the cheesecake because that's the only thing I ordered here. I knew from the start that this was the place to get the famous Basque cheesecake and this place certainly did not disappoint. Flavor and creaminess was AMAZING. I've had many basque cheesecakes, and try this place was the originator and clear winner. It's also a tapas bar, so it gets quite busy, so we bought 4 orders of cheesecakes and took it to go. Had I known he would be gone for 2 weeks on vacation, I probably would have put in a 24hr notice to bring home a whole cake. It was just that good! I came back a few days later to find a sign on the door saying they would be gone until the beginning of July :(. I've had to try other cheesecakes in the area, definitely not the same.

    The line was pretty short on a Wednesday afternoon. We ordered their famous Basque cheesecake. It was absolutely delicious. It is lighter and creamier than I've ever had and less sweet. My only regret was getting only one slice per person!

    A lot of social media hype generally makes me weary of the actual establishment; but I came here to try one thing and one thing only - the cheesecake. Even though I arrived at 3:50pm ten minutes before the spot closes for a few hours- it was a mad house. The cheesecake is quite fluffy and goes down nicely with a coffee it was pretty unmemorable. Also tried the apple cake which was basically sliced apple with no crust or spice. I would come here if there was no wait. But I am sure San Sebastián has some other cakes that are less viral that taste better.

    Best Basque cheesecake per the hotel owner where we stayed. She gave us her "Best of..." link and off we went. In Jen we trusted. Stuffed our faces and ended our afternoon of SS pintxos tasting at La Vina. She did not disappoint.

    The cheesecake is as good as advertised. Light, fluffy and creamy. I had heard rumors that they are known as the best in the world. It did not disappoint. Be prepared to wait in line to get this delicious cheesecake. I passed by two nights in a row and the line was incredibly long. Decided to try the morning when they opened at 10:30. This was the right call. No line. Ordered with a glass of Albariño wine.

    La Viña is famous for its award-winning cheesecake. It's packed with tourists. One portion of cheesecake comes with 2 slices for 6 euros. You can't get one slice. Maybe it's made of idiazabal cheese? There's plenty of seating inside. Very popular and busy and fast service.

    Burnt Basque cheesecake was absolutely delicious. It does not compare to anything you've had. So creamy, not overly sweet and very lite. Asking for one slice is plenty to share for 2. Very generous portions. The service there was great. Very friendly. The line may look long, but it moves quite quickly. Most people I notice they get it to go.

    Hands down some of the best cheesecake in the world! Goes great with a cold glass of txakoli. The bar gets packed, but service is quick. Also, don't sleep on their marinated octopus - that was another highlight of my pinxtos party.

Watching the square come alive in the evening while dining beneath the illuminated basilica made for a memorable experience. We ordered several pintxos to share, and every dish was excellent. The standout was the Carrillera (slow-braised beef cheek with mashed potatoes), which was incredibly tender, rich, and comforting. The Platillo de Bonito with tuna, anchovies, green peppers, and olives was fresh and full of classic Basque flavors. The Panceta (pork belly) was another highlight, perfectly crisp on the outside and meltingly tender inside. We also loved the creamy Croqueta de Jamón Ibérico, and the Bacalao Confitado con Pil Pil de Piquillos was beautifully cooked, with delicate cod and a silky piquillo pepper pil pil sauce. We couldn't resist trying the Pintxo Especial as well, and it was a great addition to the meal. The staff were warm and accommodating, helping us get a table outside and making us feel welcome throughout the evening. Inside, the restaurant has a lively, authentic Basque atmosphere, but the outdoor seating overlooking one of San Sebastián's most iconic churches makes the experience even more special. If you're looking for traditional Basque pintxos in a fantastic location, Atari is an easy recommendation. We'd happily come back on our next visit.

I was handed a cup of pacharán which was a bit strong but was nice to try something different. The pintxos came out one at a time which was nice we were able to fully enjoy each on their own. The bao was the only one I didn't really like mostly the bun part. It didn't taste like it was cooked all the way and was a bit gummy and there was not a lot of meat filling. Next was the lamb which was really tender and flavorful. The couscous was ok nothing special and not much seasoning to it. Then the beef cheek and mashed potatoes came out which was the star of the pintxos that we had. It was also very tender and the mash was also cooked perfectly. All of this was shared between the two of us and was very filling. The waiter let us know that some of the pinxtos could also be ordered in a full size if we wanted. We enjoyed sampling the pinxtos and would definitely recommend coming here to get a taste of local cuisine.

It was comforting, creamy, and completely different from anything we'd had before. One surprise of the evening was the tomato salad. It sounds simple, but the tomatoes were incredibly sweet and juicy, finished with excellent olive oil and flaky sea salt. Sometimes the simplest dishes leave the biggest impression. I noticed almost every table ordering the Pork Rib "Kebab," one of the restaurant's signature dishes, so that's definitely on my list for next time. If you're planning a pintxos crawl through San Sebastián's Old Town, Borda Berri deserves a stop. Simple, clean, and surprisingly creative at the same time. Exactly what Donostia gets right at its best. The room is a crush (in the best way), the team is friendly but no-nonsense, and the whole operation runs very predictably: show up early if you want tortilla; be ready to stand; order the classics and whatever seafood they're excited about that day.

Both were highly recommended to me, but given my very ambitious food itinerary for San Sebastián, I opted for just the made-to-order pintxos downstairs. I found Casa Urola lively and busy, but not claustrophobic the way some of the other famous spots in Old Town can be, which was a HUGE plus. Coming on the earlier side of the evening crawl, I was actually able to snag a seat after ordering based on staff recommendations: the mushroom tart, the pumpkin and artichoke, and of course txakoli. The made-to-order menu is offered in both English and Spanish, which was a huge plus for an English-speaking tourist like me. Both pintxos were fabulous, highly seasonal, and ended up being favorites of the entire evening's crawl. I ended up sharing a table with another solo traveler and it was so fun to compare orders and see what we each thought was best. My biggest regret is that I was honestly still too full from my lunch crawl to try more. I wish I had been able to squeeze in another visit before I left San Sebastián, but alas, I'll have to save it for next time!

Dish-wise, my runaway favorite was the artichoke hearts, charred and buttery, sitting in a golden, silky sauce with little shards of jamón and nutty crumbs. I could have eaten twenty. A seared scallop arrived in a light, foamy sauce, topped with a tangle of crisp seaweed and a few toasted seeds. Sweet, briny, and rich without being heavy. Don't miss the cheese-and-pine-nut tartlets: flaky pastry, caramelized onions, and molten Basque cheese (think Idiazabal vibes) scattered with pine nuts. Everything landed perfectly seasoned and balanced. We paired it all with Txakolina and left plotting a return just for those artichokes. Classic Basque cooking here with a faint French twist that left us wanting more - but of course, it was time to continue eating our way down the street.

Inside, it's calm, bright, and welcoming, remarkably friendly for a restaurant with Arzak's stature. This is a true family house: the building began life as a tavern run by the Arzak great-grandparents in 1897, and today Juan Mari Arzak and his daughter, chef Elena Arzak, carry the torch. They're standard-bearers of New Basque Cuisine, and the restaurant has held three Michelin stars continuously since 1989. Our menu balanced playful ideas with Basque soul. A striped egg arrived nestled in a drift of puffed rice and flower petals, creamy, nutty, crunchy, and gently smoky; the kind of dish that makes you grin before the first bite. The texture contrast was killer. A sardine pintxo on a delicate biscuit, lacquered with seeds and a bright little dot of acidity, was pure hit-the-spot snacking. Then came hake kokotxas, those beloved Basque cheeks, set over a green, herb-forward emulsion with light dairy notes and ribbons of something pickled to keep everything lifted. It's the Arzak trick: modern framing around very classic lines. From the sea again, a monumental carabinero prawn arrived butterflied and just-cooked, crowned with citrusy zest and paired with small, sweet orange cubes. Powerful and ingredient-forward, as Basque cuisine should be. The meat course kept the restraint: thick, rare slices with a glossy jus and crisp, earthy garnishes. Restraint and boldness improbably worked together. Desserts were fun and varied: a rhubarb-and-strawberry composition that leaned tart and garden-fresh; a lacy, airy "waffle" scattered with vibrant red powder; a chocolate plate with honeyed, brittle-like shards; and those geometric little chocolates at the end. Service was genuinely warm and inviting throughout: attentive without choreography for its own sake, and the pacing let every course breathe. We left happy, full, and a little star-struck by how gracefully Arzak still threads innovation through tradition after all these years. It was a privilege to meet her after our meal. If you're a food-traveler, it's worth the pilgrimage.
