If you are up for a more conventional theatrical "experience", look elsewhere. As far as experimental theatre and off-off.. stuff is concerned, this theatre might provide an intriguing diversion in what is otherwise not the most exciting city in terms of culture. The acoustics of the hall are incredible. The best way to hear a performance in that place in my opinion is to have no amplification whatsoever. Acoustic concerts are just beautiful there - unfortunately, this can result in the opposite when too much mikeing up is used. I went to see a Rhythm and blues band and the sound was overpowering and swam around the room without clarity. So, pick your show carefully - the programme is always varied and interesting. There's plenty of stuff to see, and at reasonable prices. The seats are comfy, bars convenient and toilets accessible.

In a good way! It retains it's young, vibrant and exciting atmosphere, making you want to visit just for a drink. The 'pub', now called Cast, has changed dramatically in its' decor since the late sixites but still buzzes with conversation. Shame about the 'music' - FAR too loud. Oh dear; am I getting old?! As for 'That Play'; well it was OK. The weird sisters were portrayed in a very interesting way but I found the acting in general to be rather over the top. But then I'm not an expert! And I didn't want to leave! xx

They have put on a really wide selection of shows over the years, from Shakespeare to modern comedy and musicals, and they are always involving and entertaining. One of my favourites was their version of A Christmas Carol which was simply magical and so popular it was brought back for a second year! The theatre itself is quite small, only seating about 500 people, and the seats are tiered steeply so that wherever you sit you have a clear view of the stage. Unfortunately the Playhouse is closed again at the moment due to lack of funding. I am among the many who hope that they can sort out their financial problems and re-open very soon, as I have really missed going to see their wonderful productions.

There is a large hall with stadium seating that can be setup to accommodate these larger productions. As it's not a full on venue, it's pretty reasonably priced when a good show comes to town. A few years ago I went to see the production east is east and it was fantastic. You got really close to the action. I would recommend seeing a show here. There is always a panto around Xmas and that's a good giggle and a cheap afternoon out
