I am so glad I was referred to Lactation room by my OBGYN 3 years ago and more specifically I am grateful to have met Diane then as well. This practice is very cookie cutter and not very accommodating to mom requests. They use standard lactation care and recommendations and while I feel like they perform the act of listening they don't hear you and just proceed with the standard recommendation they would use for anyone. I also found them judgmental and they would say things like "you're going to do this (insert action)" instead of "you should do this (insert action)"; definitely talking down to you and they make you feel like they're the experts and don't you forget it. breastfeeding / lactation is a journey and it should be a partnership between mom and consultant. They make you sign an agreement (avoid any practice that makes you sign one). Their billing is also ridiculous and they have 3 charges per appointment: one for mama, one for baby, one class. They over bill to insurance and of course you have to make up the difference. Honestly, lactation consultants are a new profession and unit seems they're just another way to stoke fear in moms and make you overpay for "advice". read more

I'm so thankful for Lactation Room. I called them practically in tears as my newborn wasn't gaining weight after several trips to his pediatrician. Even during COVID, they answered their phones immediately and provided me with comfort. I was able to set a virtual appointment for that same day. When my insurance stopped covering virtual consultations, I felt safe when I had to visit their office due to their safety precautions. I worked/work with Jessica and she has been awesome. Breastfeeding has been hard for me and she has been extremely supportive. I can send a message on the portal and she is always prompt to respond. I'm beyond grateful for the Lactation Room! When I had my third baby, I didn't hesitate to reach out to Sarah. She had been such a savior for my second one, my husband and I still have such fond memories of when we visited her. Her practice has grown, which is amazing, but I def feel like just another cog in the wheel. The receptionist informed me that Sarah was booked out for the next 3 months and since I couldn't wait that long, I was willing to give anyone at her practice a try. After all, if she hired them, they must not be bad, right? Ania and her intern were friendly and provided helpful tips, but I did not get that same warm feeling that I got from Sarah. I told Ania what wouldn't work for me (I.e. Ania wanted me not using a milk collector and use milk pads instead) and while she explained to me why milk pads were preferred, she didn't seem to hear me. She insisted I feed my baby every 2 hours start to start since my baby wasn't getting enough milk- have you watched a sleep-deprived mom function like that when they have 2 other kids? We were asked to fill out 2 forms (one for myself and one for my baby) and it was pretty much rammed down my throat that we could not be seen if I didn't fill these out Before the visit (mind you each form takes about 15-30 min to fill out and my appointment was 2 hours away). Ania said I seemed stressed- not really, I was annoyed that she wasn't really taking into account what would work best for me and my household. Lastly, she asked me to do a follow up and message her to let her know how things were going and if I "really needed to," I could come see her again. So the message I got leaving the practice for a newborn mom was: we're not really here to help you, just doing the minimum we can. I left with a couple tips, but didn't feel supported and left there feeling like a crappy mom. Overall, if I could go somewhere else, I might give them a try over Lactation Room, unless it is with Sarah. read more

Lactation Room is one of the best places I have ever been to. I was about 4 days in as a new mom with my new babe and I was struggling so hard for him to latch properly/for him to eat. Luckily during my time at the hospital post delivery, a wonderful nurse had recommended I reach out to Lactation Room as did my son's pediatrician. I reached out and Jenny contacted me back within hours. My husband I went to the Rockville location with so much anxiety but as soon as we met with Jenny, all our nerves and fears went away. She was so kind and so informative and my husband and I left the consultation feeling more confident and assured that we weren't doing anything wrong. She even did a follow up session to our place which was so convenient for us. I would definitely recommend lactation room to any moms who are struggling with nursing. I really thought I would be in good hands here. I met with Jenny for issues with my supply and possibly a tongue tie.She was very encouraging and nice but didn't offer any real guidelines...She came to our house for 45min instead of the usual hour plus, hurrying through the feeding and not observing how my daughter was dealing with the bottle even though my husband and I mentioned some concerns. She recommended herbal supplements to deal with my supply without first assessing what the root cause might be. More importantly, I never received her report and recommendations even after sending her 2 emails about it in the two weeks following her visit. Not sure why my experience was so disappointing in comparison with all other reviews but I don't recommend. read more

I am currently living in San Diego due to military orders. But, after I had #4 with an obvious tongue tie, I reached out to a friend for a consult recommendation. I was connected with Brittney right away and had a video consult within days of giving birth. She was amazing!! She offered me great advice and tips on getting my tongue tied baby to latch deeper. She also encouraged a tie revision which, the pediatrician didn't want to refer me to. I have great milk supply and baby was already gaining, so she saw no need. However, Brittney knew the long term effects a tongue tie can have an encouraged us to get it clipped. I am thankful for that advice as baby has gotten a deeper latch and no longer falls off while nursing. She continued to follow up with baby and I for the next week to make sure things were continuing to improve after our initial appointment. Amazing consultant!! Even though it was a video consult and it couldn't be hands on, I felt like I received as good of advice and support had it been in person. Sarah saved my wife's life, literally. After having met her once at a prenatal consultation, she came a few days after my wife delivered twins. Walking through the door, she immediately told us that my wife looks physically distressed and severely anemic. How did we not catch that ourselves? She then told us to get an OB appointment ASAP, and then called our OB herself to tell them to get us in, even arguing with them when they tried to blow her off. Why would a lactation consultant care so much to go that extra mile? We went to the OB, and from there straight to the ER, with postpartum preeclampsia. Minor symptoms that my wife had been experiencing, such as occasional heart palpitations, increased at an alarming rate just in the time between when we got to the ER and when they made the diagnosis. My wife was admitted, treated, and released the next day. Without Sarah, we certainly would not have caught this, and I expect we would have had a medical crisis by that night, certainly one with a long recovery time and possibly one with lasting effects. I haven't said much about Sarah's lactation services, which are all excellent, but in my mind are simply overshadowed by the ENORMOUS service she did us in noticing a problem none of us did. We are always going to have a deep debt of gratitude for her tenacity and vigilance. read more

Short version: If you are having trouble getting your baby to breastfeed, Sarah will help you get there! Our story: Due to complications at birth and some bad advice we were given from early on, we had serious doubts as to whether or not our newborn would ever be able to breastfeed exclusively. We were told by some that breastfeeding would be impossible for our little girl. Thankfully, Sarah proved them wrong! Sarah was recommended by our pediatrician. Among the several local lactation consultants we reached out to, Sarah was the fastest to respond, the most generous with advice even before any appointment made (AKA free advice), compassionately understanding of our circumstance, and, incredibly, the most reasonably priced. When she arrived, she was well-prepared and guided us through the approach she wanted to take given our circumstance. She was patient in answering questions, attentive when listening to our concerns, and had a very reassuring manner about her. She handled our newborn in a way that we were comfortable with, which was important: we'd had some lactation consultants who were incredibly aggressive and seemed to give our baby more distress. We'd done our research and tried every technique we could find. Nothing worked despite countless attempts. Sarah got our baby to breastfeed on her first try! She showed us several other approaches and was able to get baby to feed in each and every one of them. After showing us the techniques, she spent a lot of time teaching us how to work as a team to recreate her results. Sarah's pamphlets were helpful as well and gave us that extra resource when the going got rough after our session. The entire time, we felt like Sarah was 100% there for us and felt like she truly wanted us to succeed. The session's pace was relaxed and felt like we had a knowledgeable friend guiding us. While it was scary trying everything on our own, each session built upon previous successes. If breastfeeding is your goal, and you're having difficulties, know that there is a solution out there. If you're looking for exceptional lactation support, you've found it! As a first time mom, breastfeeding has been my number one priority. In July, I met with Jenny for an intro to all things breastfeeding. She covered everything and patiently answered all of my questions. She truly taught me everything I know, while also educating me on what to expect and how to troubleshoot various scenarios. My son was born healthy in August. It's November, and I've had Jenny's support at least once every three weeks since he arrived. Our breastfeeding journey hasn't been easy -- many people have encouraged me to quit and "just go to formula" (including my pediatrician!). Jenny has PATIENTLY worked with us, both in person and virtually, to guide us through. I've messaged her late at night in tears, and she's always responded promptly and with a ton of strategies. This post is very late, but Jenny deserves the praise. My baby is almost a year old now, and I'm still able to breastfeed her easily. This is my first baby, and I had no idea what breastfeeding entailed. The first two days in the hospital, I was so panicked because I assumed my milk would just be there...I wasn't even sure colostrum was coming out. I was ready to accept that I tried, and my baby would drink formula, which I told myself while pregnant, is a fine option. However, Jenny came to my room, educated me, and helped me figure out the proper latch, how to hold my baby, and told me how to supplement with formula if it would ease my mind. I gave tiny bits of formula those first three days, so that I knew my baby was eating. However, the day I got home from the hospital, my milk fully came in, and we were able to stop supplementing! Jenny called me to check in on me, and provide additional support. Fast forward 3-4 months, I asked Jenny to come do a house visit. I was about to return to work, and needed help figuring out how to pump, how often, and how much to give my baby. She watched us do a feed, weighed my daughter before and after, and helped determine how much she was eating. We then came up with a plan of how much milk to leave behind. Later, we went through some additional issues, which I explained to Jenny via text, and she was able to refer me to my pediatrician to ask about reflux. Once we got that under control, it has been smooth sailing! Do not hesitate to give her a call As a second time mom and veteran breastfeeder, I thought that breastfeeding would go as smoothly the second time around. That's why, when I was told that my baby hadn't gained enough weight at his one month appointment, I was in total shock. I chalked it up to stress and thought that if I could get my stress under control my supply would go back up. At my pediatrician's recommendation, I met with Sarah, and she helped me to come up with a plan to increase my supply and help my baby gain weight. She was very compassionate and knowledgeable, which was great because my hormones and stress levels were at an all time high and I was feeling devastated and guilty that breast feeding wasn't going well. Her plan helped put my mind at ease and slowly my supply started to increase. She also helped identify that my son had a tongue and lip tie. Now that the tongue and lip tie have been revised, breastfeeding is going much better. Through my experience, Sarah helped guide me when I was feeling lost, worked with me and what I felt comfortable with doing and gave me actionable steps that really did help. I don't even remember how I found these lactation consultants in the middle of my really painful first month of breastfeeding. Jenny was super professional from the beginning and I loved that I was able to message her as well. She weighted my baby before and after a feed and in less than 5 minutes he took more than 3 ounces and really reassured me that my baby was gaining weight beautifully. It's all I needed to hear as a first time mom. I don't know what took me so long to reach out again but I pretty much went for over two months with my baby being super fussy at night time. At first I thought it was the three month regression, and at the four month visit, all my pediatrician could say was that he should be over it already (really? well, aren't you a doctor? he isn't!). My husband and I would prepare ourselves as soon as it hit 6pm and we pulled our hairs. We tried everything, we swaddled him, he wouldn't eat, I would change positions, I thought maybe I didn't have enough milk, I fed him bottles, and every day it was something else, and every day he went to sleep at a different time until we managed to put him down to sleep. I finally decided to go to see Jenny and I was super happy with their office, it's super cute. I told her everything and anything that was going on that I could think of and she really listened. After listening she thought what my baby was asking for is a bedtime routine. So she suggested I start tiring him up and have him to play and get his energy out by 6pm and do a bath, read some books, in a room with deemed lights, white noise, and feed him. I did just that and for three days in a row now he has gone to bed with absolutely no fuss, no tears, no nothing. The craziest part is that I get the evening to myself for the first time in I don't know how long. I couldn't be more grateful. I was put in touch with the Lactation Room shortly after my daughter was born. Breastfeeding was not going well; i didn't feel very supported by the LC at the hospital and I was struggling getting appointments with the lactation consultant at my Pediatrician's office. I contacted the breastfeeding center of MD and Jenny from Lactation Room called me an hour later (at 9 pm no less!) and we had an in-home appointment scheduled two days later. Having a lactation visit at the home is LIFE changing. I was so much more comfortable and the visit wasn't rushed in any way. Jenny took her time and examined our daughter for any potential issues and we came up with a game plan. We scheduled a follow-up visit for two weeks later and my daughter was almost exclusively breastfeeding at that time thanks to the help we received. Jenny was also available via email at any time and i was able to ask questions and get guidance when we experienced a nursing strike. Thanks to her assistance, we were able to successfully nurse until my daughter self-weaned just after she turned one. I got the baby from rapidly loosing weight to gaining 2+ pounds over the birth weight in 2 weeks. The hospital lactation consultants got me to the point I was producing milk, but I was not sleeping and second guessing every feed. Sarah met with us when I was the most stressed and sleep deprived. Sarah came to my house to help me with breastfeeding my 3 week old. She was having difficulty latching and breastfeeding had become very painful! I had finally began using a nipple shield and wanted Sarah's advice. Sarah tweaked my positioning technique and had her latching without the nipple shield on the first try. She also checked my daughter for tongue / lip tie and found a possible lip tie and recommended an ear,nose & throat specialist. Sarah is the best! I called her for help with feeding techniques for my 10 week old son who has reflux. She helped me with positioning, showed me a better way to burp my baby and also observed that he had a tongue and lip tie and referred me to a specialist. The specialist agreed with Sarah's observation and performed a procedure to release both ties. I hired Sarah to come back 3 days after the procedure and she found that he was able to drink nearly double the amount he could when he was tied. He's a completely different baby and so much happier now. If not for sarah, I would have never found out about his ties and the ENT thought he would have had difficulty with speech down the road. I am so thankful for Nina who works for the Lactation Room. She has helped me so much, I can't even say it enough. My son was born very small at 4 pounds 14 ounces. Due to his size, he had a hard time figuring out how to breast feed at first while we were still in the hospital. The hospital therefore had me start pumping right away to get my colostrum for him. When we left the hospital my milk quickly came in and I had a TON of it. It was horrible. I contacted the Lactation Room and was assigned to Nina. She was available the next day to come to the house! She was so kind and easy going that it made me relax more while trying to figure out how to breastfeed. He was doing great after her help, but I wasn't. I remained horribly engorged and it was killing me slowly. After just 4 weeks I decided to call it quits. Even though this side of it hasn't been easy either, Nina has answered every question I have had, which there have been a ton! Even with all of their attempts at helping, I was still not able to successfully breastfeed. Fast forward through 8 weeks of exclusive pumping and I was ready to give it one last shot. Sarah was recommended to me and she was just wonderful from the start. She's very knowledgeable, supportive, and makes you feel at ease. She was able to refer us to a top notch oral surgeon to correct a tongue tie that was not properly corrected after our daughter's birth. She helped me with re-starting breastfeeding even with my baby being a few months old. I loved that she was able to meet me at my home so that I could "practice" in my own space, which helped me remember her tips and feel more comfortable.
