Kall Kwik UK

Kall Kwik may be a familiar name in many city streets but they are franchises (like many McDonalds…read moreas it happens). Perhaps because they are independently owned, the service is fantastic. I've used this Kall Kwik on a number of occasions in the three years I have been in Birmingham and they have been super-efficient and well-priced. I just send email over what I want printed to the exact size and they print it. They always give me an exact quote before so there are never any surprises. They also let me know when they can do the printing by as I am always on a deadline with when I need to get my posters and flyers out for various events. Quite often they print the same or next day but always ask to be sure. They will also send you a proof to check before they print and offer anything from 1 poster to thousands of flyers. Of course there is a discount per item the more you have printed. Very much recommended.

The quality of the print work is outstanding and they are super helpful if you have any questions. The list of their print services and options is really comprehensive both on the website or if you pop into the studio. In the studio they have badges made from printing offcuts, sweatshirts and tees with awesome graphics as well as bags and cards. Sadly the prints on the wall for bands you probably love that they've printed up aren't for sale, but they show off the quality of service.

I popped into the shop last week to see what else they have on sale, and was excited to see they've been collaborating with other local artists - eg. Yellow Door Bindery - to create limited edition runs. Not only do these guys know their stuff (as clearly evidenced all over their website and blog, including how-tos which I LOVE as sometimes artists can be so precious about sharing tips!) but they're also environmentally responsible donating a percentage of their sale to charity. All round good guys - we need more like you!

This is a crazy little newsagent, located under the Big Peg in the main shopping parade…read more They have an ok selection of magazines, covering most genres; lots of porn, hair, gaming, dogs, women's weeklies, Asian weddings, tattoos...etc. I always judge a newsagent on their curation of the magazine shelves and whilst this place isn't amazing, it does have a large range. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that it sells office equipment, being under an office building and all but Supershop really does have the most random selection of stuff; from Pukka Pads to tights to WD-40 to dish drainers - it's not quite a supermarket but more like being in your grandad's garage. A real convenience store I guess as you will always find the things you don't expect they will have. They also do photocopies which has been useful to me in the past as there is always an astronomical queue at the post office round the corner.

So I'm checking out the magazines they have when the shop keepers starts calling over, telling me he's closing soon and I need to pick a book to buy, then keeps asking me what book I'm going to buy in a hasty manner. "None" I reply in a cool well delivered retort. Truth is I was just killing time while my girlfriend looked at pencils or whatever but the shopkeeper was so crazy edgy it really put me off buying anything. The front of the shop was a normal city newsagent set up (lots of porn) all your favourite drinks and snacks, plenty of tobacco. But the odd thing round the back was a massive selection of stationary, almost a separate shops worth. Lots of postage bags and packages too. Not a bad place at all, just felt I caught the shopkeeper on a bad day.

Now at Lifford Lane they recycle quite a large amount of diverse household items: green garden waste, cardboard, paper, glass, metal, wood and wood-based products (MDF, chipboard etc), engine oil, car batteries, fridges & freezers, textiles, shoes, TVs & CRT Monitors, fluorescent tubes, gas bottles, soil, hardcore & rubble. I have no idea what you could possibly recycle soil or rubble as, but ours not to reason why - the good thing is they have this capability and they make it easy for us. What's not so great are the queues. It's just as well that the centre is set halfway down a fairly quiet road that leads to a business park - otherwise the queues of traffic that occasionally build up there would be wreaking havoc on the roads of Birmingham. The guys at the entrance are usually quite friendly and not generally as gruff as you get at other tips I've visited. The parking bays for the bulkier things are quite tight to me, but then I'm the world's worst parker, so it's probably just me. The recycling place tends to be pretty busy, which is encouraging. Quite often though this means parking up can be tricky as there aren't designated bays and some people's idea of parking leave even me speechless. Also, the paper and bottle banks can get very full indeed, especially after a holiday. Sometimes if you're only recycling these items I think you would be better off finding a more local bank. The other thing to note is that children aren't allowed out of the car for obvious reasons. This however did come as a huge disappointment to my daughter rather strangely.

The prices in terms of the laptops being sold are pretty good. But again I would go somewhere else to buy a laptop. Customers I have spoken to have said they would come back to this shop and get their laptops repaired. The wait was not that long which was one reason why they said they would return. I've been using rehearsal spaces in and around Birmingham for about 14 years and Hockley Street Studios is the one I've used the most over the last 8 years and have rented a lock-up there for the last two and a half years. All the staff are friendly and are themselves musicians. It's the kind of place where they soon get to know you. Rehearsal spaces can get expensive but this studio has a small room which can be rented for £5 an hour.
