Holy guacamole, this is a long review. But I started writing and then I found I couldn't stop. So if you're after the short version: I did some aerial circus classes. They were super fun, teachers are great, they make sure you do some fun/exciting tricks, but you do need a base level of flexibility/fitness to be able to do it. Overall I am loving these classes and I will definitely be back for some more next term.
The long version:
I am halfway through the Lyra and Russian Silks classes. These are six week classes, which cost $120 each, offered at Loft in West End. Lyra & Russian Silks are both aerial classes: Lyra is on a suspended hooler hoop and the Silks are long pieces of silk hung from the roof (Think Pink's concerts). Overall, I have been really impressed.
What is it:
Lyra has been great. It is a little easier for a beginner to do Lyra, as one you get up you can rest, sitting on the hoop, taking the strain off your arms. The teacher shows us what we are going to do and then shows us where that could eventually lead us and it is very impressive. It is not easy but everyone in the class has been able to pick it up so don't be daunted!
Russian Silks is harder than Lyra as you need to have the strength to climb. Despite the fact that I am not all that strong the teacher makes sure I get to do a few of the cooler tricks, so its not just climbing up and down, which is good.
The classes mostly take place at Loft in West End, but some can be at Fringe in Fortitude Valley. They say on the website where each class is being held.
The teachers:
The teachers have worked in circuses before and are really good at what they do. One of the teachers,Lena (a.k.a. Lady Marlene), is particularly great; she's patient, very knowledgeable and is able to teach. The other I didn't think would be as good, as at the start she seemed a little impatient with a few of us. However, I realise now that she was used to teaching more advanced classes so she had to figure out as the lesson went on how to adapt it to what we, as complete newbies, could do. As soon as the second class started she was in the zone and was really great. So my advice is, don't worry about being nervous when you see what they expect you to do or if they show you things which look tough in the first class. It might seem crazy when they tell you to let your arms go and hang by your legs but they wouldn't ask you to do it if they didn't know you could do it and those things are the most fun to do! And she was always there to grab our legs for those ones which we weren't quite strong enough to do yet but wanted to have a go at.
My advice:
What I would say is that flexibility and strength are really important. So you need to have a bit of a base level of fitness already, which I don't think they emphasised enough on the website. I guess people who are attracted to these sorts of classes tend to have that, as everyone in the classes have been able to participate but it's more fun if you have the flexibility/strength to do the funner tricks. As part of that, our teacher gave us 3 exercises we had to do every day (splits stretches, core exercise and push-ups) to get those attributes!
And as I said above, trust your teacher! They know what they are talking about! Overall I am loving these classes and I will definitely be back for some more next term.
Also, Lady Marlenes has a bunch of other courses such as burlesque which seem to be really popular and look like fun, from what I can see when I am hanging upside down :) read more
