Because of the size and relatively quietness, new firefighters are assigned here to spend about 5 months doing hands-on training, going on real calls and doing actual work at a slower pace before rotating out to other busier stations. Firefighter Jeff was quite friendly, inviting us in after their tiller truck had backed into the garage. We took the opportunity to take a look around and admire how organized and clean everything is. Each tool in the toolbox has its own indentation on the foam so that it stays in place and looks extremely organized. That's such a smart idea that I might copy for my kitchen drawer full of loose gadgets. During the tour, the station received a call that required paramedics and a fire engine, so Firefighter Jeff had to hurry out. We witnessed the sense of urgency in the station but it was a calm and collected rush. It was interesting to see the firefighters jump into their gear and GTFO of there. The alarm was of a low buzz/whoop and the announcement over the PA system was very matter-of-fact relay of information. I suppose if the alarm was shrilly like on TV or the movies and if the lady over the PA system shrieked like Kevin McCallister's mom every time, it would get old fast. We loitered around for a few minutes out back - saw their tool shed from the outside and saw that they had their gas pump. This is a single-level fire station so no fire poles here. We saw other firefighters during the frenzy but they went back inside after the trucks left. We didn't want to be weird and stick around unaccompanied and also there wasn't much else to see anyway. I don't recommend making a trip here to visit since firefighters need their rest, but if you happen to be walking by and a firefighter seem like they are willing to spend their downtime talking to you, then by all means, say hello

You stick to questions regarding the situation if not asking about "how many hours I get from my job" or "my pay" and patted me down infront of the lower deck of leavey library. That is too invasive and off track with said field interview. At Leave library (just getting off of security work), I voluntarily informed the security guard at the front that I was carrying 2 pieces equipment that I use for my security work. He informed me to put my uniform and my equipment in my bag, I complied and appreciated him for help but later 6 officers came 20-25 minutes after that while I was there to simply charge my phone. First time being on USC campus in what 4 years. I filed a complaint and confronted one of the officers (Garcia), he apologized but it was very half-assed (justifying it by saying USC is private property and I was wrong for having my equipment), felt humiliated and intimidated. Hopefully this is a lesson to the officers involved (6 officers) especially your Supervisor Garcia. I. And Sgt. Lopez ( he was understanding at first but once I filed the complaint, he turned cold and condescending when I didn't let it go). Treating me like I did something criminal but regardless of one's position no one can escape accountability. I now know to bring a portable charger for my phone now. Shout out to Sgt.Owens for reaching out to me and offering reconciliation for the officers and hopefully educating them, Sgt. Masa...you are my hero! You absolutely, positively made my day and I can say without a shadow of a…read moredoubt that you are the most kind, courteous, funny, Fireman that I know...AND...a great tour guide to boot. I stopped by because Mr. Masa was concerned about how my "ticker" kept a fluttering and flip-floppin' in my chest...he said, "Come by, I'll check you out..." better to be safe than sorry. So I took him up on the offer and drove myself over to Fire Station 20 this afternoon. Of course...Masa was out on a mission so I had to wait like a hooker on the corner of Sunset. It was WELL worth it though because as I came around the corner with my cell in hand (talking to Aaron about his recent motorcycle mishap) to find to young firemen standing with a BIG banner saying (in a rainbow of colors no less!)..."WELCOME CARRIE!" LOL (see above photo!) I had made a joke about how I expected him to be standing out front with a sign stating just that...so to actually have him do it...PRICELESS. And the poor gents kept standing there until Masa told them to stand down!! To top it off...they brought me a Guinness Tiramisu gelato from Scoops...MY FAVE!! I was like a little kid in a candy store...me...firemen...ice cream...what more could a gal ask for? So I sat in the ambulance and got my "ticker" checkup...all was well (although...gotta watch that blood pressure so none of y'all better piss my ass off or else!! Uh oh...there go the beats...better calm down lol) I used the ladies room and when I came out, an engine had pulled in and a young guy was stepping down...imagine his surprise to see some blond girl with a friggin' ice cream standing in the station lol. I was like "hi...don't mind me...I'm with Masa." lol He was very polite...we bonded. Hehehe. I opted NOT to slide down the poll...maybe next time. The bestest was the little secret Masa and I shared (our inside fun)...complete with my ice cream in hand. Was such a lovely day!!! Thanks Mr. Masa for taking such good care of me...you and your men at Station 20 quite simply take the cake!!

Once he gets you all situated, he then opens another cupboard to reveal his "Man Cups." These plastic behemoths look like they can fit a liter in them, easy. And now I know where he got the idea. Man Cups are for men, much like the men that work at Fire Station 20. I've been here three times, but I was treated out to a Man Lunch on my second visit thanks to my man winning a lunch made by a true blue hero, firefighter and freshly crowned Masa M. Our man lunch consisted of an entire loaf of the round Hawaiian Bread cut in half, about an inch of ham, one layer of bacon, an inch of turkey, then an inch of cheese put in between. The whole thing is then quartered and there's your sammich. I also got to drink water out of a Man Cup, with option to put lovely flavorings in it like punch of lemonade. Our lunch was pretty exciting, too! As we dined with other firefighters, they got a call from a speaker system, and everyone sprang into action. Fortunately, the call did not require the paramedic truck to go out, so we got to happily finish our meal and take the tour. We were shown through the pretty spiffy entertainment room (where Masa showed us the computer where a lot of his Yelping magic happens), the locker room and individual showers (non-communal? That breaks my fantas-stereotype!) and their workout space and dorms, and if this place wasn't hot enough, this station has not one but TWO poles! And no...I didn't slide down the firemen's poles. Soon enough the truck and engine returned, and I was taught the difference between the fire truck and the fire engine: the truck has the tools, the engine has the hoses. A small enough event would allow just the truck to go, but the engine must always to with the truck. AND THEN we got to take a ride IN the truck...which around the hills of Echo Park is pretty wild! It goes without saying that a fire station, including the gear they wear, is ingeniously designed for efficiency, but it was really fascinating to see. The trucks and engines are no exception. Every space is utilized and there's a place for everything. It wouldn't take anyone that long to memorize how to access anything they needed at a moment's notice. I'm not sure if you could tell, but this was my first real visit to a fire station, and I feel like a part of me can grow up now. It may be good that I never went when I was younger, because I either wouldn't have appreciated it, or I would have wanted to grow up to be a fire truck (and NO, not so firemen can ride me, thankyouverymuch). (PLEASE NOTE: I do not mean to be sexist in this review by saying all the aforementioned cups and sandwiches and lunches are male exclusive, as women are men too, just with the WHOA)

1 Star LADWP has…read morebeen one of the most frustrating and damaging parts of my ADU project. My detached ADU received its Certificate of Occupancy, but LADWP has still not activated power because of confusing, inconsistent, and poorly communicated meter-spot instructions. This is not a minor inconvenience. The ADU is complete, but I cannot use it, rent it, advertise it, host anyone, or operate it because LADWP has not provided a clear path to meter installation and activation. LADWP first provided one meter-spot direction. Later, they issued a revised meter spot relocating the ADU meter panel. My licensed general contractor followed LADWP's revised instruction. Then LADWP issued a correction notice requiring a "2-gang panel," even though the primary house already has an existing meter and service, and the only new service needed is for the detached ADU. This requirement makes no sense to us without a clear written explanation. My licensed contractor has asked LADWP to clarify whether a new two-gang meter assembly is actually required or whether the correction notice was unclear or incorrect. Instead of quickly resolving the issue, LADWP has left me stuck after final approval with no power, no clear written correction, no confirmed reinspection date, and no confirmed activation date. The communication has been extremely poor. Different instructions, vague correction wording, and no urgent supervisor-level resolution have caused unnecessary delay and financial harm. As a homeowner, I relied on LADWP's instructions, my licensed contractor, and the inspection process. I should not be punished because LADWP issued confusing or inconsistent requirements. Every day this continues, I suffer real loss-of-use damages. A completed ADU sitting without power because LADWP cannot clearly explain its own meter requirement is unacceptable. LADWP needs serious improvement in accountability, communication, and customer service. Customers should not have to chase multiple departments, elected offices, customer relations, and supervisors just to get a basic written answer about meter installation after final approval.
