If your feeling energetic take yourself to the towpath. It's 11 miles of natural beauty were you can cycle/ walk/ run/ dance /skip / rollerblade alongside the river and get a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and traffic. The path begins at the LaganValley island in Lisburn and finishes up at Lockview Road Stranmillis or vice versa depending on your direction of travel. The paths are tarmac surface and mostly in good condition although there are a few tree roots starting to appear in places so be careful if cycling flat out in case you end up in the air. Theres are lots of little benches spaced out along the path for that much needed breather or just to take in the scenery and do some wildlife spotting. The path also runs alongside the Lock Keepers Inn which I've been told is great for coffee and food. The path crosses through Hilden, Ballyskeagh and Lady Dixon Park where there is also a coffee shop. It's a good spot if your into photography with lots of wildlife, flowers and the old Hilden Mill building.
The rules of the towpath are: keep left / bag your dog poo / cyclists must yield to all other path users. Keep a listen out for bicycle bells and move in when you can. read more
