There is a large wooden playground for kids, plenty of trails and routes to accommodate for the frequent runners and bikers, ovals and barbecues (these run high in demand on sunny weekends). Jells park isn't crowded or overpopulated, but there are enough people around to give it a sense of a community. The park is more of a wetlands/bush land style park compared to a botanical type. I love coming here as it has a vibe of happiness to it, there are always children running around, couples biking and dog walkers. Jells Park is very large and you probably could get lost in it (but if you just follow any path it'll take you back out). If you're in the local area, pop down for a bbq and enjoy.

There's fishing on the side of the lake that is outside of the conservation area, but I hope you like carp! There's the occasional redfin, but they seem like the exception and not the rule, particularly if your experience is anything like mine. The barbecue facilities are pretty good, if sometimes quite busy. In some spots, you'll find free electric barbecues, in others, you'll find wood-burning barbecues. Wood is usually provided, which is a plus. Just remember to take out everything you take in. No rubbish should ever be left there.

I guess the reason that I say that is because there really isn't all that much bush here. I'm sure there was once, but most of the trees have been removed, probably because this place used to be sheep paddocks (or more likely cattle actually). Still, it is close to home, and when you get to the top of the hills, you do get some pretty amazing views. Also, there are some shelters at some strategic points where you can rest, or if you are like my, sit down and have a packed lunch. At the top, there is a lookout, though unfortunately the lookout is over South Morang, so unfortunately there is really nothing to see there.

I still remember coming down here around Christmas time for picnics with the extended family and spending our time climbing all over the train. Much has changed since then as all of the train has been fenced off with the exception of the drivers cabin. They have also built a modern playground, but they still have the lake (which unfortunately they discourage you from swimming in, drinking from, fishing in, and duck shooting in: in fact I don't think you can do anything with the lake except look at it, and I'm pretty sure they will not appreciate you attempting to waterski in it, not that I would recommend it considering that it is pretty shallow). However, despite the lack of water activities, this place is still a great place for a picnic, and who knows, one day you may wander down here and discover an African choir singing in the ampitheatre (I did).

So many beautiful flower beds as well as towering fig trees. Crossing from the City Circle Tram to the park was a challenge, but once at the park, it is a very easy walk to the Queen Victoria Market on the Northeast Corner over William Street. A nice stop while exploring Melbourne.

Apparently it is the highest natural point in the city, though that is impossible to judge based on all the buildings surrounding it. You're in for a treat if you go. Yes, it is small. One can walk end to end in about 20 minutes. And yes, it is used primarily as a jogging track or for walking one's dog. Who cares, though, when just around a corner is a little slice of bushwalking? It's tranquil, green, there's a creek, there are ducks, there's even a bench or two to sit and think about life.
