Called in and take out order, the man on the phone took our order minus one item which we had intended to get. He claimed there was no such item on the menu. He told us it would be 25 minutes (a little longer than most places I've had take out from). When we arrived they said out food still wasn't done, 40 minutes after my initial call our food was brought out, we asked for house fried rice with an order. We did not get that, just regular rice. The owner didn't seem concerned so we just left. When we got home, our crab rangoons were cold, my pad thai had no spice. So to sum it all up, rude service on the phone, rude service in the restaurant and bad food. Will be hard to give it a second chance. read more

Lai Thai is my favorite Thai restaurant. The service can be spotty but the food is dead on fantastic. If you are a fish lover, all of the salmon dishes are praiseworthy. The chicken corn soup is also my wife's and my favorite. Lai Thai was voted so I visited another Thai restaurant but I love this place. In the past I lived right around the corner and ate there all the time. I recently learned tht this is the same family that had the only Thai restaurant in Oklahoma City that I visited quite often They were much younger I was much younger but what are the odds we meet in GR? TIP: If you order curry and you are allergic to cow milk--be advised, that you must actually request it be made with coconut milk only..... It is news to me that when you are ordering curry that you must request it be made exclusively with Coconut Milk and NOT COW MILK. I have never heard of the practice of adding heavy cream to curry? Is this a dairy industry thing? Is this to save money? Is this because of the standard American Palette? Either way, the menu doesn't mention the use of cow milk in the curry. I am not an angry vegan. I am ALLERGIC to Cow Milk. Therefore, I usually order Curry--which is traditionally made of Coconut Milk. Never before have I encountered this practice... So I went to bed with a stuffy nose and feeling odd and wake up today feeling sick (my normal reaction to COW MILK). Ugh. My husband and I were invited here by a colleague for dinner and we were not disappointed! All the staff were friendly, helpful, and all had smiles on their faces. The place itself is a bit on the smaller side but makes for a more cozy, homelike atmosphere. We will definitely return to try more of what's on their menu, but from this visit the Thai iced coffee, Tam Ka, and sticky rice with mango were the favorites of the night. A very cozy, welcoming place. It's a small restaurant but not so small that you feel crowded.The service is consistently very good and the owners are almost always on site and they're really cool people. The menu features a wide range of Thai and Vietnamese items, and there are some very good vegan choices as well. I usually go for the kitchen sink pho. I've dined in at Lai Thai about 5 times, and done about 10+ carryouts. General Tso's chicken is pretty damn top notch, considering that I've had that dish from east coast to west coast. Pad Ped and Pad Thai can be very very awesome, but clearly it's not always consistent between the different cooks in the kitchen. I recommend going with medium to medium-hot -- that compliments their flavor much better than mild. I've ventured around their menu into dishes I've never tried before and I've been satisfied. Love their sizzling rice soup. Pho is above average for around this town, but of course, doesn't compare to our home-made Pho. Portions are generous. Their soda is perfect (I'm a soda snob... and they've got their syrup/carbonation combo kickin'). Prices are fair/medium, but you'll have plenty to share or take home. read more

This restaurant has been a favorite ever since I moved to gr. My husband and I even considered the distance from this restaurant in choosing where to move. Needless to say, this is the BEST Thai place in the area, but it has other great Asian fare as well. The Gang Garee and Pad Ped are something truly special, but I have yet to try anything there that I do not like. Their lunch buffet during the week is a great deal (only a little over 7 with tax) and the service is always friendly. Because it is a small restaurant, you might have to wait a little bit on busy day. But trust me...it will be worth it! read more

My boyfriend and I are from out of town and we were craving pho. Found this place was the only open so we decided to go. We weren't that hungry so shared the pho combination and ordered some bubble tea. We felt bad that we arrived just 20 minutes before closing but they were so welcoming ! Two servers and I believe the owner were out in the dinning area. The owner/manager was very helpful did not just sit around, gave us utensils and our waters. During our meal he came to ask how everything was going. After a few hesitations on my avocado bubble tea(tasted like coconut instead?) he said let's take it back then, get ya a new one! He came back and let me know she usually uses real avocado but she ran out. Asked me if I'd like to try another flavor and went with the green tea. Love this place! I moved to the neighborhood about a year ago and tried Lai Thai shortly after moving in. The first impression was great. I have only ever ordered take out so I can't comment on dine-in. The service is always great. Food is prepared quickly but you can tell each meal is made to order and not just scooped out of pre-prepared meals. The food is delicious every single time I've ordered. A few favorites: crab Rangoon's, Bangkok rolls, chicken satay. My favorite main is curry. All of the curries are amazing. Massaman and Penang are a personal favorite. The curry Pad Thai is a must try! My boyfriend loves the Indian fried rice with beef - the beef is always super tender. We've tried many other Thai places in Grand Rapids and nothing compares!! read more

I went here to try their Pho tonight as it had good reviews. It was ok. The broth was too bland for me. Not enough meat and basil too. The fresh spring rolls had too little greens and a lot of noodles. The Pho and fresh spring rolls in Pho Soc Trang are better. I like the ambiance of the place and the service is stellar. I always get take out when I order from here because I live nearby. Only rarely does the process take longer than estimated, and they are always polite about it. First time visit....The takeout experience. Picked up in a timely manner. Fried Spring rolls were very over cooked and incredibly greasy almost as if they were fried twice. Panang Curry is one of my favorite Thai dishes I usually get XOs but wanted something closer to home. The sauce was very broken and the flavor wasnt good. Mango sauteed chicken looked more like soup and the chicken tasted as if it had gone bad. Mango was nice and ripe but the flavors just didn't blend well. I came to Lai Thai, continuing my search for a decent Chinese restaurant that wasn't overpriced, and nothing fancy. Just solid, well done food that wasn't gross or over fried chunks of whatever covered in sauce. Lai Thai is decently priced and offers a wide variety of very good cuisine. They offer Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese. Although much of their food is decent, I'd stay away from the curry. Last time I went the curry was mostly soupy, and gave me a wicked stomachache. read more

I ordered peanut pad Thai two days ago and regret it. The noodles were practically swimming in sauce. Totally wrong noodles to sauce ratio. There were green onions in it that were not peeled and were tough. It tested awful and was a complete waste of 14 dollars! I noticed that most patrons were ordering rom the menu. In addition to the lunch buffet there is a lunch menu plus the offerings on the full menu are also offered in lunch portions. WORST CHINESE FOOD AND RESTAURANT EVER. After my entire family got their entrees, they come out to tell me they don't have my dish and ask me to order something else. So I do and it comes out when everyone is done eating. THE SESAME CHICKEN, GENERAL TSO CHICKEN AND LEMON CHICKEN ARE ALL THE EXACT SAME DISHES. A GENERAL BROWN SAUCE ON BREADED CHICKEN. MY LEMON CHICKEN HAD SESAME SEEDS ON IT, WHAT? Then I order brown rice and he brings me out a fried rice that tasted like it was cooked in a rusty old pan. When I told him I ordered brown rice he told me that was brown rice! He said we don't have brown rice so when you order brown rice here that's what you get! Then charged me for the more expensive entree that they didn't have instead of the lemon chicken that I got. I have no idea how this restaurant has 4 stars. Pitiful. read more

One of the worst experiences I've had in a long time. Placed a take-out order with two entrees, crab rangoon, and spring rolls. When I went to pick up my food, they had forgot to cook one of the entrees, and were not at all sorry. The offered to remake it, but told me it would still be a while and I would have to wait. Just figured my partner and I would share the one entree and appetizers and it would be fine, so I took the food and left. Get home and discover the crab rangoons are the size of a quarter, not really exaggerating either. Ridiculously small. Then the shrimp spring rolls which are huge (the two rolls together are about the size of a beer can), have only one tiny shrimp per roll. The one entree we did get, the Pad Talay, was a good size, but was supposed to include shrimp, crab, scallop, and squid. The amount of seafood was pitiful. There was only one piece of crab and I couldn't find a scallop at all. It was very bland for medium spice thai food. Just tasted like store-bought curry simmer sauce. When I called the restaurant to complain the woman told me that the owner made the food and she wasn't responsible. I don't understand what that means, but you shouldn't be blaming other people in the business and not taking responsibility. I expected them to tell me that this was out of the ordinary or try to convince me that something had gone awry and they could do better. That didn't happen. While this restaurant is closer to me than the other thai places on the south side, I will not be going back and will just be driving a bit further for good thai food. read more

So I never really saw this place even though I've driven done that road many times. My boyfriend's brother mentioned it and I thought that I should give it a try. I love pho and I don't get to enjoy it often because all the good places are on the south end of town. So I went. I wasn't impressed. The noodles were not cooked thoroughly and it just didn't have the taste that I expect. They serve both Thai and Vietnamese but I didn't feel that they did either justice. So, unfortunately I probably won't be there again and I will drive myself to the south end of time to get my fill of pho and my trusty thai restaurants. read more

My problem with Thai food is that I always inevitably and inadvertently compare it to the food I had in Thailand - I know this is like apple and orange, but I can't subconsciously do anything about it. I ordered the pad thai and my friend got some chicken curry dish that came with steamed rice. I was pleasantly surprised that our lunches came with complimentary spring rolls and soup! No where did the menu mention anything about lunch specials. I'm not much of a spicy eater, so I ordered the pad thai mild, but I thought it was a bit spicier than mild. Other than the surprise lunch special, the pad thai and accompanying soup and egg roll weren't anything to write home about. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but I also wouldn't be opposed to coming again if someone else wanted to. Another plus was that the portion sizes were pretty big - I had to get a box to take leftovers home. Other things: - My friend wanted more rice when she asked for a box for her leftover curry and they gave it to her free of charge! - The furnishings are pretty on point - it's comfortable, cozy and doesn't really catch your eye. - They also have Vietnamese and Chinese menu options, so maybe those are better/worse; I'm generally skeptical of pan-Asian fusion restaurants... read more
