After two nights of paying £35 for perfectly satisfactory accommodations in Dumfries and Fort William, my lodging luck ran out in Elgin. Every place was booked or did not take credit cards, so I ended up paying £65 for a room in this crummy hotel. Speaking of 65, that was probably the last year that the carpets were cleaned in here.
My room was tiny, even by European standards, and oddly shaped, perhaps stuck on as sort of an afterthought at the end of the hallway when they were designing the hotel. Oh well. I only intended to sleep and shower there, doing my usual routine of check in, go eat dinner, hit a few pubs, stumble home at night, drag myself out of bed in the morning, and hit the road. Thankfully it was not a cold night, as the narrow single bed had merely a sheet and a thin blanket with which to keep me warm.
Breakfast was included, but I can't tell you a thing about it, so it must not have been particularly memorable. read more
