Natchez City Cemetery So manyyyy stories in this cemetery! Here is just a slimmmm few of the billion this beautiful cemetery offered. Storm Shelter Grave: Ten-year-old Florence died of yellow fever. During her short life, she was extremely frightened of storms and whenever one occurred, she would rush to her mother to find comfort. Upon her death, her mother built her tomb so could check on her little girl during storms by looking through the window at the bottom of the stairs and into the grave. To shelter the mother during storms, hinged metal trap doors were installed over the area the mother would occupy while at her child's grave. Rocking Chair Tomb: Ruphus E. Case wanted to be buried in his rocking chair facing his home state of Louisiana. A brick structure was built around Mr. Case and his child or grandchild's grave. Prior to the renovation of this grave, the bricks had crumbled very badly and if you had a flashlight you could look through cracks and see Mr. Case's remains sitting in his rocking chair. The Turning Angel: On March 14, 1908, a gas explosion destroyed the five-story Natchez Drug Co. and killed several employees. The angel watches over five young girls who worked there, ages 12 to 22. The owner was so devastated that he purchased a lot to bury his employees and an angel monument to place at their gravesite. This monument is now referred to as 'The Turning Angel' because at night when cars drive by it appears to turn and follow them. A True Love Story: L. H. Lawrence After his wife's death, each day after work, Mr. Lawrence would come to her grave. Sometimes he was carrying his toolbox, but he often left it overnight beside her tombstone. Many times he would be found in the early morning hours by the grounds crew sleeping beside her grave. He spent so much time here that they placed a bench there. After his death his toolbox was encased in plastic and placed under the bench.
